Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →wmvconv.dll is an obscure third-party file associated with Sony Picture Motion Browser and PlayMemories Home, not a normal Windows component. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the affected Sony application from Sony’s official PlayMemories Home installer instead of downloading the DLL separately.
What this file actually does
Public file metadata describes wmvconv.dll as WMVConverter Module. File catalogs associate WMVConv.dll with Sony software, including Picture Motion Browser and PlayMemories Home. That attribution comes from file catalog data rather than a current Sony file manifest, so the exact application on your computer still needs to be identified.
PlayMemories Home manages photos and videos imported from Sony cameras. It can also perform media conversion and related operations, which explains why a component named WMVConverter may be loaded when the program starts or processes video.
wmvconv.dll is not documented as:
- A Windows system file
- A Windows Media Player component
- A Visual C++ runtime file
- A DirectX file
- A device driver
- A general-purpose DLL that belongs in
C:WindowsSystem32
Windows normally searches the application’s own folder during DLL loading. For that reason, the correct copy usually belongs beside the Sony application that requires it, not in a global Windows directory.

Causes and symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Correct direction |
|---|---|---|
| PlayMemories Home will not open | Damaged or incomplete installation | Repair, uninstall, and reinstall PlayMemories Home |
| The error began after antivirus cleanup | The DLL was quarantined or the installer was blocked | Review quarantine, then reinstall the signed application |
| The error appeared after an update | The update did not finish or downloaded incomplete files | Restart, use a stable connection, and reinstall |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The DLL or one of its dependencies is missing | Reinstall the complete Sony application |
| Several unrelated programs fail | Possible Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| The file exists in Downloads or a temporary folder | Suspicious or unrelated copy | Scan it and remove the parent source |
| A newer Windows installation will not run an old Sony build | Obsolete or mismatched installation | Use the current Sony package rather than mixing DLLs |
Reported error variants include:
- “This application failed to start because wmvconv.dll was not found.”
- “The file wmvconv.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: wmvconv.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading wmvconv.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because wmvconv.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Failed to load wmvconv.dll.”
- “Cannot find wmvconv.dll.”
- “Cannot register wmvconv.dll.”
These are reported variants from DLL index pages, not an official Microsoft or Sony list. The wording can differ between Windows versions and applications.
Fix 1: Identify the program that needs wmvconv.dll
Start by confirming which application is producing the error. This prevents you from repairing the wrong program or replacing a legitimate file with an unrelated copy.
Check the error window
Read the title bar and message carefully. If it mentions PlayMemories Home, PMB, Sony, or a Sony camera utility, use the Sony repair procedure below.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If the message appears immediately after launching a shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Note the application name and installation path.
- Select Cancel without changing anything.
Check installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for PlayMemories Home, Picture Motion Browser, or another Sony media application.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Search the list for the Sony application.
You can also open Control Panel, select Programs, and choose Programs and Features.
Check the application folder
If the program is installed, right-click its shortcut and select Open file location. Look for wmvconv.dll in that application directory.
Do not treat absence from a search as proof that Windows should have the file. A missing file in the Sony program folder usually means the application installation is incomplete. A copy found in System32, SysWOW64, a Downloads folder, or a temporary directory requires additional scrutiny.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall PlayMemories Home from Sony
This is the primary fix when PlayMemories Home or an older Sony media application reports the error.

Sony’s official PlayMemories Home support area provides a Windows download, repair instructions, and installation troubleshooting. Use that support area rather than a DLL archive or a third-party installer.
Prepare Windows
- Save open work.
- Install pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Connect the computer to a stable internet connection.
Uninstall PlayMemories Home
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find PlayMemories Home.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Complete the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If the normal uninstall fails, use Sony’s official PMH_Repair_EN.bat repair tool:
- Download the repair tool from Sony’s PlayMemories Home installation-error page.
- Locate the downloaded batch file.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Wait for the repair process to finish.
- Restart the computer.
Sony’s repair process is intended to remove PlayMemories Home-related installation items without deleting your photos or movies. Still, keep personal media backed up before making major installation changes.
Remove only the leftover program folder
After uninstalling and restarting, check the old installation locations:
C:Program FilesC:Program Files (x86)
If a clearly identified PlayMemories Home folder remains, remove it only after the application has been uninstalled. Do not delete unrelated Sony folders or manually remove files from Windows system directories.
Install the current Sony package
- Open Sony’s official PlayMemories Home download page.
- Select the Windows download.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Keep the computer connected to the internet if the installer downloads additional components.
- Restart Windows after setup completes.
- Launch PlayMemories Home.
Sony identifies PMHOME.exe as the full-module installer and PMH_Downloader.exe as the normal downloader. If the web installation repeatedly fails, use Sony’s full-module installer where the support page provides it.
The result is successful when PlayMemories Home opens without the wmvconv.dll message and can reach its normal library or import screen.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and blocked installation
Security software can quarantine a DLL or interrupt the Sony installer. Do not immediately restore an isolated file from quarantine.
Review quarantine history
The exact labels differ by antivirus product, but the process is similar:

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving PlayMemories Home or
wmvconv.dll. - Read the detected file path and action.
- If the file came from a random download, temporary folder, or unknown installer, leave it blocked.
- If it came directly from Sony’s installer and the detection is clearly a false positive, follow your security product’s process for allowing the application.
Prefer reinstalling the complete Sony application over restoring a single quarantined DLL. A full reinstall restores the application’s related files together and avoids mixing versions.
Sony’s installation guidance also advises temporarily disabling resident or antivirus software when installation fails, then enabling it again immediately after the installation finishes. Do this only if necessary, disconnect from unnecessary networks while protection is disabled, and do not leave antivirus protection turned off.
After reinstalling:
- Re-enable antivirus protection.
- Update its detection database.
- Run a full scan.
- Launch PlayMemories Home again.
Fix 4: Do not copy wmvconv.dll into System32
Copying a DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is usually the wrong repair.
It can:
- Put the file outside the application that owns it
- Create conflicts between old and new versions
- Mix 32-bit and 64-bit components
- Hide the incomplete Sony installation
- Cause another program to load the wrong copy
- Make later uninstall and repair operations less reliable
Windows DLL search behavior includes the application directory, which is why reinstalling the parent application is the correct way to place its private DLLs.
Do not download wmvconv.dll from random DLL websites. The file may contain malware, belong to a different release, use the wrong architecture, or lack other dependencies that the application needs. Even a clean-looking replacement often leaves the underlying Sony installation damaged.
The safe source is the official Sony PlayMemories Home installer and repair process. If you no longer use the Sony application, uninstalling it is safer than preserving an orphaned DLL.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair
You may see advice to run:
regsvr32 wmvconv.dll
That is not an appropriate first-line repair for this file. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that wmvconv.dll is a COM server that should be registered.
The command may return an error such as:
- “The module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- An architecture mismatch error
If you already ran it, undo nothing. Reinstall the Sony application instead.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when other software is affected
A missing application DLL is not normally fixed by SFC or DISM. Use these commands when several unrelated programs fail, Windows behaves abnormally, or the Sony installer itself reports broader component problems.

- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Run DISM first, then SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Then enter:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Sony installation.
Do not close the window while either scan is running. If DISM reports that it could not repair the image, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the commands again. If SFC reports that it found corrupt files it could not fix, save the result and continue with Sony’s installer troubleshooting rather than downloading the DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf manually running DISM and SFC repeatedly leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows issues and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling PlayMemories Home remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 7: Check architecture and obsolete software
The available public metadata for wmvconv.dll does not establish a reliable 32-bit or 64-bit version. Listings conflict, so do not select a replacement DLL based on a file-download page claiming that it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Use the architecture of the application and the official Sony package:
- Do not combine a random 32-bit DLL with a 64-bit application.
- Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit application folder.
- Do not assume
SysWOW64means “64-bit files.” - Do not install an old PMB component into a current PlayMemories Home folder.
Sony provides a current Windows 64-bit PlayMemories Home download. Older 32-bit availability is different, so legacy PMB installations may need to be replaced rather than patched one file at a time.

If you are using an old Sony camera application only for an older device, install the package Sony currently provides for your operating system and follow its compatibility instructions. If the application is no longer required, uninstall it.
Fix 8: Update related drivers only when the evidence points there
A video or camera driver can affect importing or playback, but it is not the usual cause of a missing wmvconv.dll. Do not use Device Manager as a substitute for reinstalling PlayMemories Home.
Use Device Manager when the computer also shows a device warning:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras, Imaging devices, Sound, video and game controllers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If the device has a yellow warning icon:
- Right-click it.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Device status message and error code.
- Install the driver from the camera or computer manufacturer when Windows cannot find one.
- Restart and test PlayMemories Home.
Do not uninstall a working device driver merely because wmvconv.dll is missing. Repair the Sony application first.

Frequently asked questions
Is wmvconv.dll a Windows file?
No. It is not documented as a Windows component. It is associated with Sony media software, especially Picture Motion Browser and PlayMemories Home.
Is wmvconv.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot answer that. A copy in the correct Sony application folder may be legitimate, while a copy in Downloads, a temporary folder, or an unrelated system location deserves investigation. Check its path, digital signature, antivirus result, and parent application.
Should I download wmvconv.dll?
No. Download and reinstall the complete Sony application from Sony’s official support page. Standalone DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or fail to include required dependencies.
Should I put it in System32?
No. The file normally belongs beside the Sony application that loads it. Copying it into System32 can create version and architecture conflicts.
Is wmvconv.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public listings conflict, and there is no authoritative file inventory establishing a universal architecture for every copy. Use the official Sony installer appropriate for your Windows installation.
Does regsvr32 fix it?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose COM registration functions. Reinstalling PlayMemories Home is the correct repair path.
Why does “the specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
That message can indicate a missing dependency rather than a missing wmvconv.dll. Reinstalling the complete application restores the DLL and its related files together.
Can SFC fix this file?
Usually not, because wmvconv.dll is associated with third-party Sony software rather than protected Windows system files. Use SFC after DISM only when broader Windows corruption is also present.
What is the most reliable fix?
Identify the Sony application, uninstall it, run Sony’s repair tool if needed, restart, and install the current PlayMemories Home package from Sony.
