winfax.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called the Microsoft Fax API Support DLL, not a file you should download from a random DLL website. If winfax.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, restore the Windows Fax capability first, then repair the specific legacy application reporting the error.
What this file actually does
winfax.dll supports the Windows Fax Service Client API. Applications use this API to communicate with a local or network fax server, connect to fax services, enumerate fax jobs, and send documents. Microsoft documents the API through winfax.h, including functions such as FaxConnectFaxServer and FaxSendDocument.
The file is associated with Microsoft Fax Server and Windows Fax and Scan components. On Windows client editions, it is normally supplied through Windows servicing rather than through Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a game runtime.
This file is separate from WinFax Pro, the discontinued Delrina and Symantec fax product. Similar names do not prove that WinFax Pro owns the Windows winfax.dll file.

A legitimate Windows copy should have a valid Microsoft digital signature. The exact file location, version, and size depend on your Windows release, servicing level, language, and whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit. Do not replace it with one universal file copied from another computer.
What the error usually means
The message may appear when Windows starts a fax application, an office workflow, a document-management program, or an older business application. Common wording includes:
- “This application has failed to start because WINFAX.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.”
- “WINFAX.dll is missing.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because winfax.dll was not found.”
- “winfax.dll could not be loaded.”
- “The program can’t start because winfax.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “winfax.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The named DLL is not always the true root cause. The Windows Fax capability may be absent, the component store may be damaged, or the requesting application may be incomplete or incompatible with your version of Windows.
Causes and the correct response
| Symptom or situation | Most likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| The file is absent from Windows component locations | Windows Fax and Scan is not installed | Install the Print.Fax.Scan capability |
| The failure began after an update or interrupted repair | Damaged Windows component store | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Only one old application reports the error | Incomplete or incompatible application | Repair or reinstall that application |
| The program is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows | Architecture mismatch or redirection issue | Install the supported application edition and matching Windows component |
| Antivirus lists the file in quarantine | Possible false positive or malware replacement | Verify the path and Microsoft signature before restoring |
DISM returns 0x800f081f |
Required component source is unavailable | Use matching Windows media or Features-on-Demand content |
| The problem appears after a disk problem | File or component-store corruption | Check storage health, repair Windows, and install updates |
| Reinstalling Fax and Scan changes nothing | The application may have its own dependency or obsolete API expectation | Inspect the application installation and contact its vendor |
Fix 1: Install Windows Fax and Scan
This is the best first repair when winfax.dll is missing from Windows component locations or the computer recently lost fax functionality.
Windows 10 version 2004 and later identify Windows Fax and Scan as the Feature on Demand capability Print.Fax.Scan~~~~0.0.1.0. On Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, Microsoft does not preinstall this feature by default. Microsoft lists the capability and package details in its Features on Demand documentation.
Install it through Settings
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- In Windows 11, select System, then Optional features. In Windows 10, open Apps, then Optional features.
- Select View features or Add a feature.
- Search for Windows Fax and Scan or search for
fax. - Select the feature.
- Choose Next, then Install.
- Wait for the installation to finish.
- Restart Windows if Settings requests it.
- Start the application that produced the error.
A successful installation should remove the missing-component error if the Windows Fax capability was the owner of the missing file. Test Windows Fax and Scan itself if it is available from the Start menu.
If the feature does not appear in Settings, or installation stops with a source error, use DISM.
Install it with DISM
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Print.Fax.Scan~~~~0.0.1.0
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft documents capability installation and alternate source handling in its DISM capability servicing documentation.

If DISM reports 0x800f081f, Windows could not find the required source files. Do not download an arbitrary CAB file or copy winfax.dll from another system. Use matching Windows installation media or an organizational Features-on-Demand source that corresponds to the installed Windows build. If this is a managed computer, ask the administrator for the approved source.

If the capability installs successfully but the same program still fails, continue with the system repair and application checks below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
A failed update, interrupted servicing operation, disk problem, or damaged component store can make a protected Windows file unavailable. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
Run DISM
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Let the operation finish. It may take time and can appear to pause.
- Read the final result. A successful repair reports that the restore operation completed successfully.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
After restarting:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows again.
- Open the application that reported the error.
SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files. It may also report that no integrity violations were found. Either result is useful: test the application after the restart rather than assuming the named DLL is the only problem.

If the failure remains, use matching installation media or a supported Windows repair installation rather than manually replacing the DLL.
Running these commands by hand can make it difficult to know what changed when several repairs are needed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system-file problems and show what it finds; its repair features require the full version, and it is not required for this repair.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the application that reports the error
If Windows Fax and Scan installs correctly but one old program still displays the error, that program may be the real owner of the failure. It may have been copied incompletely, installed with an outdated setup routine, or built around assumptions from an older Windows release.
First identify the exact application:
- Read the title bar and full error message.
- Note the program name and executable name if shown.
- Right-click the application shortcut and select Properties.
- Check the Target field to identify the executable.
- Look in Settings → Apps → Installed apps for the program.
- Write down its publisher and installed version if shown.
Then repair it through Windows:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Locate the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the program’s stored settings.
Some desktop applications do not provide Repair or Reset. For those programs:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Obtain the original installer from the application’s vendor or installation media.
- Close the program.
- Back up any application data or settings.
- Uninstall the application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps or Control Panel → Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer with the required administrative permissions.
- Test the program before restoring custom settings.
If the same old application reports winfax.dll on several computers, its package or compatibility is especially suspect. Reinstalling Windows Fax and Scan repeatedly will not repair an application that expects an obsolete API behavior or carries an incomplete private dependency. In that case, use the vendor’s supported version or contact the vendor.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Windows supports both 32-bit and 64-bit applications, and file-system redirection can make a path appear different depending on the process viewing it. On 64-bit Windows, System32 does not simply mean “the folder for every 64-bit file” in the way many repair guides suggest.
Do not copy an x86 DLL into a 64-bit application folder or replace a 64-bit Windows component with an x86 file. Microsoft servicing records show both x86 and x64 copies in supported Windows packages, but the exact file details depend on the Windows build and architecture.

Check the application architecture through its documentation or vendor support information. You can also inspect the application’s installation folders and executable properties, although the Properties dialog may not explicitly show bitness.
The safe approach is:
- Install the Windows Fax capability through Settings or DISM.
- Install the application edition supported by your Windows architecture.
- Use the application’s original installer.
- Do not substitute a DLL downloaded from another machine.
- If the program is very old, check whether its vendor supports Windows 10 or Windows 11.
If the error says that the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error,” treat architecture and file integrity as higher priorities than simply searching for a replacement.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and file signatures
Security software can quarantine a legitimate system file after a false detection. Malware can also replace or introduce a file with the same name, so restoring every quarantined item is unsafe.
To investigate:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
winfax.dll. - Record the reported path and detection details.
- Run a security scan with current definitions.
- If a file is restored, verify that it is located in a Windows component path and has a valid Microsoft signature.
To check the signature of a visible file:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the Microsoft signer and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature.
You can search for copies with:
where winfax.dll
This command may show more than one result because Windows supports different architectures and application paths. A copy in an unexpected application directory deserves additional scrutiny. Do not delete or restore files solely because their names match.
If malware is suspected, run a full Microsoft Defender scan or a reputable offline scan before attempting manual repair.

Fix 6: Install Windows updates and check recent system changes
A pending cumulative update or incomplete servicing operation can leave Windows components in an inconsistent state.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when requested.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
- Run the DISM and SFC sequence from Fix 2.
- Test the application.
If the error began immediately after a clearly identifiable update or software change, System Restore may be appropriate if a restore point exists:
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restoration and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore is not guaranteed to repair a missing Windows capability, and it should not replace the DISM and SFC process. If the issue began after repeated disk errors, check the drive’s health and back up important data before continuing.
Fix 7: Install the Fax Server role on Windows Server
Windows Server handles fax functionality through the Fax Server role rather than the same client-oriented workflow used by Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Use Server Manager:
- Open Server Manager.
- Select Manage.
- Choose Add Roles and Features.
- Select Role-based or feature-based installation.
- Choose the target server.
- Select Fax Server.
- Accept the requested additional features.
- Continue through the wizard.
- Select Install.
- Restart if requested.
- Configure and test the fax service.
Microsoft’s Fax Server installation guide describes the role and its related components.
The PowerShell method depends on the Windows Server release. First find the feature name:
Get-WindowsFeature *Fax*
Then install the feature name displayed by that command:
Install-WindowsFeature -Name <feature-name> -IncludeManagementTools
Microsoft documents the command through Install-WindowsFeature. Use the feature name reported by your server rather than guessing a name from another Server version.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 8: Update related device drivers only when the evidence points there
A fax device, scanner, multifunction printer, or modem driver can prevent a fax application from starting correctly. However, a driver update will not normally recreate a missing Windows system DLL. Use this step when Device Manager shows a device error, the application fails only while accessing a particular device, or the problem began after replacing hardware.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, Modems, and Universal Serial Bus controllers as applicable.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Properties.
- Read the Device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the fax application.
If Windows cannot find a driver, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel and match the driver to your Windows edition and architecture. Avoid replacing winfax.dll as a substitute for fixing a device driver.
Manually hunting through driver versions can be repetitive when several fax or scanner devices are installed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify available updates; installing drivers through its full version is optional, and the hardware manufacturer’s supported driver remains the definitive choice.
Why you should not download or register the DLL
There is no official Microsoft standalone winfax.dll download package. Random DLL download sites sites cannot reliably prove the Windows build, architecture, provenance, signature, or servicing state of the file they provide. A replacement can contain malware, fail to match the application, or create a version mismatch that Windows later overwrites.
Do not manually copy winfax.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- The application’s installation folder
The correct repair is to restore the owning Windows capability, repair the component store, or reinstall the application that requires the API.
regsvr32 is also not a universal DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Registering winfax.dll does not restore a missing Windows feature or repair the component store. Microsoft describes the command’s scope in its regsvr32 documentation.

If the error remains after every repair
At this point, identify the exact executable and record:
- The full error wording
- Whether Windows Fax and Scan installed successfully
- The result of DISM
- The result of SFC
- The application’s architecture
- The file path shown by
where winfax.dll - Any antivirus quarantine entry
- Whether another computer shows the same failure
If only one legacy application fails, contact that application’s vendor and ask whether it supports the current Windows release and requires a particular Fax API behavior. If multiple Windows components fail, continue with Windows servicing, matching installation media, or a supported repair installation.
FAQ
Is winfax.dll safe?
The genuine Windows file is a Microsoft component and should carry a valid Microsoft digital signature. A file with the same name in an unexpected folder, without a valid signature, or flagged by security software should not be trusted automatically.
Is winfax.dll part of WinFax Pro?
Not based on the matching name alone. WinFax Pro was a separate discontinued product. winfax.dll belongs to the Windows Fax API and Windows Fax components.
Should I install Windows Fax and Scan on every computer showing this error?
No. It is the highest-priority check when the failure belongs to the Windows Fax capability, but a third-party application may be incomplete or incompatible. If the feature installs and only one program still fails, repair that program.
Does Microsoft provide a current standalone download?
No official standalone winfax.dll download package is provided. Restore it through Windows Features on Demand, Windows Server role installation, DISM, SFC, or a supported Windows repair process.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does where winfax.dll show more than one result?
Windows supports multiple architectures and uses file-system redirection. Different applications may see different paths. Multiple results do not prove that one copy should be deleted.
Will regsvr32 winfax.dll fix the error?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for self-registering DLLs and does not reinstall Windows Fax, repair corrupted system files, or correct an incompatible application.
What if Windows says the source files cannot be found?
For DISM error 0x800f081f, use matching Windows installation media or an approved Features-on-Demand source. Do not mix CAB files or DLLs from another Windows build.
