“tmptbl.dll” missing or not found: what the error means
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou may see one of these messages when an Autodesk-based program starts:
- “The program can’t start because tmptbl.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because tmptbl.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.”
- “The file tmptbl.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading tmptbl.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Cannot find tmptbl.dll.”
- “Cannot register tmptbl.dll.”
tmptbl.dll is an old Autodesk application DLL, most plausibly belonging to an AutoCAD-family installation, so the safest fix is to identify the Autodesk program that owns it and repair or reinstall that program.

The 60-second answer
Do not download tmptbl.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Instead:
- Identify the exact application that shows the error.
- Open that program’s installation folder and check whether
tmptbl.dllis missing beside its main executable. - Check Windows Security quarantine.
- Use the Autodesk product’s Repair option if the installer provides one.
- Reinstall the same Autodesk product and version if repair is unavailable or fails.
- Only investigate Windows components or dependencies if the repaired application reports a different missing file.
Public file inventories associate tmptbl.dll with older Autodesk products including AutoCAD 2000i, AutoCAD 2002, AutoCAD 2004, Autodesk Map, Architectural Desktop, Building Systems, and Mechanical variants. That does not prove that every Autodesk product uses the file, or that one copy works with all of them.

What is tmptbl.dll?
tmptbl.dll is identified as an Autodesk, Inc. application file with the description and internal name tmptbl. It is not established as a Windows component, Microsoft runtime, DirectX file, .NET file, or modern shared Autodesk runtime.
The available public records point to an old Win32 or x86 application DLL. Reported file versions and sizes differ between product inventories, so there is no single universal version that should be downloaded or copied between installations.
That distinction matters. A DLL with the right filename can still be wrong for the application because it may belong to another Autodesk product, release, architecture, or internal interface. The correct replacement is the copy supplied with the affected program’s own installer.
First identify the program that needs the file
The visible error may name the application, but sometimes Windows displays only the DLL name. Find the parent program before changing anything.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the shortcut
- Right-click the shortcut used to start the program.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Note the executable name and its full folder path.
- Select Open File Location if that button is available.
Look for the folder containing the relevant Autodesk executable. For an AutoCAD-family product, the main file may be acad.exe, but other Autodesk applications use different executable names.
Check the running process
If the error appears after another launcher starts:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a likely Autodesk process.
- Choose Open file location.
- Record the full path.
Do this before reinstalling anything. A computer can contain several Autodesk products, and repairing the wrong one will not restore the missing private DLL.
Check the installation folder
In the suspected folder:
- Look for
tmptbl.dll. - If it is present, right-click it and select Properties.
- Review the Details tab.
- Compare the file’s location with the executable that produces the error.
- Do not replace the file merely because its version or size differs from an online listing.
If tmptbl.dll is absent from the same application directory as the Autodesk executable, the installation is incomplete or the file has been quarantined. If the file exists but the message says “the specified module could not be found,” a dependency of tmptbl.dll may be missing instead.
Common causes of the error
Damaged or incomplete Autodesk installation
This is the most likely cause. A failed update, partial uninstall, interrupted setup, disk problem, or accidental deletion can remove one application file while leaving the rest of the program visible.
Antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed or isolated an old application file. This is especially important with legacy software, where files may be uncommon or digitally signed differently from current applications.
Mismatched product files
Installing a DLL from another Autodesk release can create a worse problem than the original missing-file message. Public records report different tmptbl.dll versions, and a filename alone does not establish compatibility.
Wrong architecture
The available public metadata identifies the file as Win32 or x86. A 32-bit Autodesk application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the matching 32-bit application files in its own installation folder.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not assume that a 64-bit version of a similarly named file is suitable. Do not place an x86 application DLL in a Windows system directory.
Missing dependency
“Specified module could not be found” can mean that tmptbl.dll exists but cannot load because another dependency is absent. The visible message may not name that second file.
Windows or storage corruption
If several unrelated applications are failing, protected Windows components or the storage drive may also be damaged. That is a broader problem than a missing Autodesk application file.
Fix 1: repair the exact Autodesk installation
Repair is the safest first repair because it restores files from the product’s installation source without asking you to identify a replacement DLL.
Classic Autodesk installer
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- In Programs and Features, select the affected Autodesk product.
- Click Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows when the process finishes.
- Start the Autodesk program from its normal shortcut.
Use Reinstall instead if Repair is unavailable or if the error remains. Reinstalling replaces the product files from the original installation source.
Windows Settings for older AutoCAD versions
For AutoCAD 2021 and earlier, the repair controls may appear in Settings:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select the AutoCAD product.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Repair.
- Complete the wizard and restart the computer.
For newer Autodesk products using the ODIS installer, the older Repair option may not be available. In that case, uninstall the affected product and reinstall it using the legitimate Autodesk installer or account associated with the product.
Confirm the result
After repair or reinstall:
- Return to the application folder.
- Check whether the expected Autodesk files are present.
- Start the program.
- Confirm that the original
tmptbl.dllmessage is gone.
If the same message remains, verify that you repaired the application named in the error rather than another Autodesk product. If the message changes to a different missing DLL, the first problem may be resolved and the new message identifies the next dependency.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Fix 2: check Windows Security quarantine
A quarantined file is not necessarily safe to restore. Confirm its ownership before taking action.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any item that names
tmptbl.dllor the affected Autodesk installation. - Check the detected file path and product context.
- Restore it only if you have confirmed that it belongs to the installed Autodesk product.
- Run a security scan.
- Repair or reinstall the Autodesk product afterward.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to make the program start. If a legitimate file was quarantined, update the Autodesk installation, update Windows Security, and submit the file or detection for review through the available Microsoft security process.
If the file was restored but the application still fails, use Repair or Reinstall. A quarantined file may have been damaged or removed from the installation completely.
Fix 3: reinstall from the original Autodesk source
Use this when Repair fails, the installation folder contains multiple damaged files, or the product uses a newer installer without a repair option.
Before uninstalling, record:
- The exact Autodesk product name.
- The product release shown in Installed apps.
- The application’s installation path.
- Any serial, license, or account information required by the installer.
- Custom templates, profiles, scripts, and other files that must be preserved.
Then:
- Close the Autodesk application.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Obtain the installer from the organization’s legitimate Autodesk account, deployment share, or original installation media.
- Install the same product release and architecture.
- Start the application and test it before restoring custom modifications.
For older products, the original media may be required. Do not substitute a similarly named Autodesk product or a newer release merely because it contains an executable with the same general function.

Fix 4: confirm whether the error is really a dependency failure
If tmptbl.dll is present in the correct folder, do not immediately replace it. First capture the complete message and identify the executable that raised it.
Check these details:
- The full path of the Autodesk executable.
- The full path of
tmptbl.dll. - The exact wording of the error.
- Whether the file opens in Properties.
- Whether Windows Security has logged a detection.
- Whether the error occurs for every user account.
- Whether other Autodesk applications start normally.
A dependency error may name a Microsoft runtime file such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll. If that happens, install the required runtime only from Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable documentation and select the architecture required by the application. An old x86 Autodesk program may require an x86 runtime even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because tmptbl.dll is missing. Those components do not normally supply this Autodesk application file.

Fix 5: repair Windows components when other programs are also failing
Use Windows integrity repair when several unrelated applications report missing or corrupted files, Windows features are malfunctioning, or there are other signs of system corruption. These commands will not normally recreate a private Autodesk DLL deleted from the Autodesk program directory.
Run DISM
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
If Windows reports that it repaired corrupted files, restart the computer and test the Autodesk program. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, return to repairing or reinstalling the Autodesk product. If SFC cannot complete, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC.
When manually repeating DISM and SFC becomes tedious, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing what may be wrong; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling the Autodesk program remains the definitive fix for a missing application DLL.
Check Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Autodesk application again.
Windows Update may resolve general system problems, but it is not expected to download tmptbl.dll.
Fix 6: update or reinstall relevant drivers only when evidence points there
A graphics or storage driver is not the normal source of a missing Autodesk application DLL. Consider driver work only if the program also crashes with display errors, the system has storage errors, or Device Manager reports a problem.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Storage controllers, and any category showing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the status message on the General tab.
- Use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver package when an update is necessary.
- Restart Windows and retest the Autodesk program.
Do not use Device Manager to replace tmptbl.dll; it is an application file, not a device driver.
When hunting through multiple hardware vendors and driver versions is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies outdated drivers; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the Autodesk application that owns tmptbl.dll.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering DLLs, commonly COM or ActiveX components that expose the required registration entry point. It is not a universal way to repair an application DLL.
There is no public evidence that tmptbl.dll is a self-registering COM component. Running a command such as:
regsvr32 tmptbl.dll
is therefore normally irrelevant. It may produce an entry-point or architecture error, and that does not prove the file is defective.
If an application’s official documentation specifically instructs you to register a component, use the exact path and architecture required by that product. For this file, repair or reinstall the parent Autodesk program instead.
Do not copy tmptbl.dll into System32
Avoid these common responses:
- Downloading a random copy from a DLL archive.
- Copying an x86 file into
System32. - Copying a file into
SysWOW64because Windows is 64-bit. - Replacing a file with a different reported version.
- Copying the file from another PC without confirming the exact product and release.
- Disabling antivirus protection permanently.
- Running registry cleaners.
- Registering the DLL without evidence that registration applies.
A DLL placed in a system folder may be ignored because the Autodesk executable expects its private copy beside the application. It can also create a version conflict or expose Windows to an untrusted file. The safe sources are the original Autodesk installer, your organization’s verified deployment media, or the official Autodesk account and repair process.
If the error continues after reinstalling
Collect this information before escalating the issue:
- Exact Autodesk product name and release.
- Full path of the executable that fails.
- Full path where
tmptbl.dllshould be located. - Complete error text, including any separate dependency name.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 version.
- Whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether Windows Security quarantined the file.
- Whether Repair or Reinstall completed without an error.
- Whether the failure occurs under a new Windows user profile.
- Whether other Autodesk products start.
If the file exists but cannot load, investigate permissions, antivirus logs, application compatibility, and dependent modules. If several applications fail, check storage health and Windows integrity. If the issue began immediately after a known update or cleanup and no installer is available, System Restore may be considered after backing up important data.
FAQ
Is tmptbl.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is identified as an Autodesk application DLL associated with older AutoCAD-family and related products. It is not established as a standard Windows, DirectX, .NET, or Microsoft runtime component.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhich Autodesk program owns tmptbl.dll?
Public inventories associate it with several older Autodesk products, but no authoritative public manifest establishes one exclusive owner. Identify the executable named in your error and inspect that program’s installation folder.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
Only as a carefully verified last resort from the same Autodesk product, release, and architecture. Extracting it from the original installer is safer. Repairing or reinstalling the affected product is preferable.
Should I install Visual C++?
Not for the missing tmptbl.dll message alone. Install a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when the repaired Autodesk application reports a separate Microsoft runtime dependency.
Will System32 fix the problem?
Usually not. Autodesk applications commonly use private files in their own installation directories. A file in System32 may be ignored and can introduce an incompatible or unsafe copy.
Why does Windows say “the specified module could not be found” when the DLL is present?
The message can refer to a dependency required by tmptbl.dll, not necessarily to tmptbl.dll itself. Record the full loader message and identify any separately named runtime or system component.
Is regsvr32 required?
Normally no. There is no public evidence that tmptbl.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. Use the Autodesk repair or reinstall process instead.
Can a 64-bit Windows PC run the affected Autodesk program?
Yes, a 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit Autodesk application. The application still needs its matching x86 files in the application directory, and a 64-bit replacement DLL is not automatically suitable.
What is the definitive fix?
Repair or reinstall the exact Autodesk product that raises the error, using its legitimate installer or original media. This restores the matching file set instead of guessing which standalone DLL might work.
