What’s actually slowing this PC down?

vbrun400.dll errors usually come from an old Microsoft Visual Basic 4.0 application, but vbrun400.dll is probably not the original Microsoft runtime filename. The documented VB4 files are VB40016.DLL for 16-bit applications and VB40032.DLL for 32-bit applications.
Before downloading anything, identify what the program is requesting and whether Windows can run it.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Check these points before applying a fix:
- Which program fails? Write down the application or game name and its installation folder.
- When did the error begin? Common triggers include moving the program to a new PC, restoring a backup, reinstalling Windows, or removing part of the application.
- What does the message actually name? It may say
vbrun400.dll,VB40016.DLL, orVB40032.DLL. - Is Windows 32-bit or 64-bit? Open Settings > System > About and check System type.
- Is the application 16-bit or 32-bit? The runtime required by the program determines whether it can run on current Windows.
- Did antivirus quarantine a file? Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history.
- Was the application copied rather than installed? A copied executable may be missing its runtime, OCX controls, database components, or other dependencies.
Do not begin by placing a downloaded DLL into System32. First establish which application owns the missing dependency.
Understand the real VB4 filenames
Visual Basic 4.0 shipped separate runtime engines:
| Application type | Documented runtime |
|---|---|
| 16-bit VB4 application | VB40016.DLL |
| 32-bit VB4 application | VB40032.DLL |
Microsoft’s archived VB4 documentation records startup errors such as:

and:
Cannot find VB40032.DLL. Windows needs this file to run

It also documents a related message stating that Windows cannot find the executable or one of its components.
Modern software pages and wrappers may display wording such as:
The program can't start because vbrun400.dll is missing from your computer.
or:
Error loading vbrun400.dll. The specified module could not be found.
Those vbrun400.dll messages do not establish that Microsoft shipped a VB4 runtime with that exact filename. The name may be a third-party alias, a private renamed copy, or an inaccurate description of VB40016.DLL or VB40032.DLL.
The two documented runtime files are not interchangeable. Installing a 32-bit runtime does not make a 16-bit application work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 1: Repair or reinstall the original application
This is the safest and most likely fix because the application may need more than one DLL.
If the application is listed in Windows
- Close the affected program.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application.
- Select the three-dot menu, or select the application and choose Advanced options if available.
- Choose Repair when Windows provides that option.
- Start the application again.
If no repair option exists:
- Return to the application list.
- Select the program.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the program from its original CD, installer, publisher-supplied archive, or trusted organizational software repository.
- Launch the application from its new installation.
Do not delete the program folder before checking whether it contains saved projects or data. Back up those files first.
If the program was copied from another computer
Copying an .exe file and a few visible files is often insufficient. The program may depend on VB4 runtime files, OCX controls, OLE libraries, database components, configuration files, or an installer-created registry entry.
Install the application normally on the new computer instead of copying its folder. If the original installer is unavailable, contact the application publisher or the organization that supplied the software and request the complete installer.

- Scan and repair

Run the verification or repair operation first. If it reports missing files but cannot restore them, reinstall the complete application.
A successful repair normally removes the startup error without requiring you to register the runtime manually.
Fix 2: Install the correct Microsoft VB4 runtime package
If the original application genuinely requires the VB4 runtime and its installer does not provide it, use the historical Microsoft package named Vb4Run.exe or a copy supplied by the application publisher.
The package contains:
VB40016.DLL, the 16-bit runtimeVB40032.DLL, the 32-bit runtime
Microsoft’s historical download address was:
Download the historical Vb4Run.exe package
That old URL may no longer be available. If it does not work, do not replace it with an isolated DLL from a random download page. Obtain the complete runtime package from the software publisher or original installation media.
After obtaining the package:
- Scan the installer with your security software.
- Make a backup or restore point if the computer runs other legacy applications.
- Extract or run the package according to its instructions.
- Install the runtime for the affected application.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the original application again.
The historical Microsoft instructions placed the runtime files in the Windows system directory. On current Windows, prefer the application’s installer or the application directory when the publisher supports that deployment. Windows searches the application directory and system locations according to its DLL search order.
Do not place a 32-bit runtime in an arbitrary download folder and expect every program to find it. Do not copy files into System32 merely because the error names a DLL. Incorrect placement can create version conflicts and may affect other legacy applications.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus removed the runtime
Old Visual Basic runtimes may be unsigned or bundled inside obsolete installers. Security software can quarantine them, especially after an application update or system migration.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected application,
VB40016.DLL,VB40032.DLL, or the application installer. - Confirm that the quarantined item belongs to the legitimate application or a genuine Microsoft runtime package.
- Restore it only when its source is known and trusted.
- Reinstall the complete application instead of keeping an isolated restored DLL.
If you are unsure whether the item is legitimate, leave it quarantined and obtain a clean installer from the publisher. Do not disable antivirus protection simply to copy a DLL.
Fix 4: Determine whether the application is 16-bit
This is the most important compatibility check on Windows 11 and 64-bit Windows 10.
A 16-bit VB4 application requires VB40016.DLL. A 64-bit edition of Windows cannot run 16-bit Windows applications or 16-bit components directly. Compatibility mode does not add 16-bit execution support.
Typical signs include:
- The program predates most current Windows software.
- Its installer immediately reports that the application cannot run.
- Windows displays an error about a 16-bit application or unsupported program.
- The error specifically requests
VB40016.DLL. - The program worked on an older 32-bit Windows computer but not on a current 64-bit PC.
If it is a 16-bit application, your practical choices are:
- Install and run it on a supported 32-bit Windows environment.
- Use a suitable virtual machine containing 32-bit Windows.
- Keep an older dedicated computer for the application.
- Ask the publisher for a 32-bit or modern replacement.
A 32-bit VB4 application can often run under WOW64 on 64-bit Windows, but this is not guaranteed. It may still depend on 16-bit OCX controls, old installers, drivers, copy-protection software, or other components that current Windows cannot load.
If the error requests VB40032.DLL, confirm that the application itself is 32-bit. A 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL, and replacing the file with a 64-bit library is not a valid repair.
Fix 5: Reinstall the application’s other legacy dependencies
A message that says “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may have found VB40032.DLL but failed to load another library that it needs.
Legacy VB4 applications may also require:
- OCX controls
- OLE libraries
- Database components
- Application-specific DLLs
- Old setup components
- Copy-protection drivers
- Configuration files
Reinstall the complete application and its documented prerequisites. If the installer offers Custom, Typical, or Complete, choose the option that installs all required application components.
Recommended Free Tools
If every repair produces a new missing-DLL message, the application was probably distributed incompletely or depends on a larger legacy runtime bundle. Continuing to download individual DLLs is unlikely to produce a stable installation.
Fix 6: Use Windows repair commands only for broader corruption
VB40016.DLL and VB40032.DLL are legacy application runtimes, not ordinary protected Windows components. System File Checker and DISM usually will not recreate them.
Use these commands when Windows itself is showing wider symptoms, such as damaged system features, repeated system-file errors, or problems affecting multiple applications.
- Save your work.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Run DISM before SFC. If both commands report that Windows files were repaired, retry the application. If they report no integrity violations, return to the application installer and architecture checks.

A normal VB4 runtime error is not usually a graphics or device-driver problem. However, some old applications depend on drivers, hardware keys, display components, or database devices.
First install available Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the application.
If the application depends on a device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not install a driver merely because vbrun400.dll is missing. Drivers are relevant only when the application also reports a hardware or device dependency.

Identifying which of dozens of drivers is stale can be time-consuming, and the free scan from Outbyte Driver Updater shows the drivers it finds; driver installation is handled by the full version. This is optional and does not replace reinstalling a VB4 application that has lost its runtime.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 vbrun400.dll
or:
regsvr32 VB40032.DLL
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Ordinary runtime libraries do not necessarily provide that entry point.
If Windows reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, it means registration does not apply. It does not prove that the runtime is missing or damaged.
Some OCX controls and ActiveX components do require registration, but use the registration instructions supplied by the application publisher. Do not register an unknown file downloaded from the internet.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
An isolated DLL from an unofficial download page may be:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Malware or a modified file
- The wrong architecture
- The wrong Visual Basic generation
- An incompatible repackaged version
- Missing dependent files
- Unusable because the application itself was not installed correctly
It can also conceal the real problem: a 16-bit program, a missing OCX control, a failed installer, or an application that was copied without its supporting files.
Use the original application installer, publisher-supplied media, or the historical Microsoft Vb4Run.exe package when it remains available. Do not substitute VBRUN300.DLL, a Visual Basic 5 or 6 runtime, a Visual C++ Redistributable, .NET, or DirectX. Those are different components.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Work through these checks:
- Confirm the exact filename in the error.
- Confirm whether the application is 16-bit or 32-bit.
- Check whether the file exists in the application’s installation folder.
- Check Windows Security quarantine.
- Reinstall the complete application, not only the DLL.
- Test the program from its installed shortcut rather than a copied executable.
- Look for a second missing component in the next error message.
- Ask the publisher whether the program supports current 64-bit Windows.
- Move the application to a 32-bit Windows virtual machine if it is 16-bit.
- Use DISM and SFC only when Windows shows broader corruption.
If a 32-bit application still fails after a complete reinstall, its remaining dependency may be an obsolete OCX, installer, driver, database component, or copy-protection system. If a 16-bit application fails on 64-bit Windows, replacing vbrun400.dll will not overcome the operating-system limitation.
FAQ
Is vbrun400.dll the official VB4 filename?
Microsoft’s documented VB4 runtime files are VB40016.DLL and VB40032.DLL. vbrun400.dll may be a mislabeled name, alias, or application-specific renamed copy.
Should I download vbrun400.dll by itself?
No. Use the original application installer or a trusted Microsoft VB4 runtime package. An isolated DLL may be malicious, incompatible, or insufficient.
Which file does a 32-bit VB4 program need?
A 32-bit VB4 program generally requires VB40032.DLL, though it may also require other legacy dependencies.
Can Windows 11 run VB4 software?
A 32-bit VB4 application may run under WOW64, but compatibility is not guaranteed. A 16-bit VB4 application cannot run directly on 64-bit Windows.
Will Visual Basic 6 or Visual C++ runtimes fix this error?
No. VB4, VB6, Visual C++, .NET, and DirectX runtimes are different components.
Should I copy the DLL into System32?
Not as a first step. Repair the application or use its supported installer. Incorrect system-folder copies can cause conflicts and do not repair missing dependencies.
Will SFC restore the VB4 runtime?
Usually not. These are legacy application files rather than normal protected Windows components. Reinstall the application or its trusted runtime package instead.
