“ The program can’t start because epnhtx13.dll is missing from your computer.” The epnhtx13.dll error usually means an Epson printing component is incomplete, removed, quarantined, or left behind after an Epson program was uninstalled.

Other wording can include:

  • “epnhtx13.dll was not found”
  • “Error loading epnhtx13.dll”
  • “This application failed to start because epnhtx13.dll was not found”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because epnhtx13.dll was not found”

These messages can appear when an Epson utility, printer-management program, image-printing application, or older bundled program starts.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list before changing Windows files:

  • The error names an Epson program: repair or reinstall that Epson package first.
  • The problem began after an antivirus detection: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
  • You recently removed an Epson printer: uninstall the remaining Epson utility instead of replacing the DLL.
  • The dialog also names MSVCP, VCRUNTIME, or api-ms-win-crt files: install the appropriate Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
  • Several Windows components are failing: run DISM, then SFC.
  • The failure began after a recent update or installation: consider System Restore.
  • The error appears in a game or launcher: use that program’s official repair or file-verification feature.
  • You were told to copy the DLL into System32: stop. That is not the normal fix for this file.

What epnhtx13.dll is

epnhtx13.dll is identified as part of EPSON Color Printing Plugin, published by SEIKO EPSON CORP. Its internal name is reported as EPNHTX13, and available file records identify it as a 32-bit Windows DLL.

It is an application component, not a normal Windows system DLL. There is no verified evidence that it belongs to Windows, DirectX, .NET, or the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime.

The exact Epson printer models that originally shipped this file are not publicly established. That means the filename alone is not enough to identify the correct installer. You need to identify the Epson printer or application installed on the affected computer.

The file may have been stored in an Epson program directory or beside the application that uses it. It does not normally need to be placed in:

C:WindowsSystem32

A 32-bit plugin can be required by a 32-bit Epson application even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Do not replace it with a 64-bit file.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Epson software

This is the most likely solution because the missing file belongs to an Epson plugin.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Identify the affected Epson program

  1. Write down the complete error message.
  2. Note the program named in the title bar or message.
  3. Open Start and search for the Epson application named in the error.
  4. Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  5. Search the list for entries beginning with Epson, EPSON, or the printer’s model name.
  6. If more than one Epson entry exists, record each name before removing anything.

If the error appears during startup, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and select Startup apps. Disable only the Epson startup item temporarily. Restart Windows and check whether the error stops. This identifies the program that is calling the missing plugin, but it does not repair the installation.

Use the official Epson package

  1. Find the exact printer model from the printer label, its control panel, or Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Open the official Epson Support site.
  3. Search for the exact model.
  4. Select your Windows version.
  5. Download the current printer driver and Epson utilities offered for that model.
  6. If the existing Epson software is damaged, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  7. Select the affected Epson application.
  8. Choose Uninstall.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Run the Epson installer you downloaded.
  11. Restart again when installation finishes.

If the Epson installer offers a repair option, use it before uninstalling. Afterward, launch the Epson utility or print a test page. The correct result is that the program opens without the epnhtx13.dll message and the printer remains available.

If Epson Support does not list a separate Color Printing Plugin, do not search for a standalone DLL. Install the complete package for the exact printer model instead.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may remove a DLL after detecting a suspicious file, or it may quarantine a legitimate older component. Do not restore the file blindly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Expand any entry that mentions Epson, the affected program, or epnhtx13.dll.
  6. Record the original file path and detection name.
  7. Check whether the file was digitally signed by Epson.
  8. Check whether it came from the Epson installation directory.
  9. Restore or allow it only when the path, signature, and installation source are trustworthy.

If the file was in a temporary folder, a downloads folder, or an unexpected system directory, do not restore it. Remove the affected Epson application and reinstall it from official Epson installation media.

After restoring a trusted file, start the Epson program again. If Windows Security immediately quarantines it again, leave it quarantined and reinstall the Epson package. Repeated detections can indicate a damaged installer, an incompatible legacy component, or a file that should not be trusted.

Fix 3: Repair the application from Windows

Windows 11 may provide an application repair option.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected Epson application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options.
  7. Select Repair if available.
  8. Restart the Epson program.

Repair preserves the application while replacing or correcting some damaged files. If the error remains, return to the same screen and choose Reset only if you understand that application settings may be removed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If no repair option exists, select Uninstall, restart Windows, and install the current model-specific Epson package.

On Windows 10, use Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the Epson application, and choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall when the installer provides those options.

Fix 4: Remove obsolete Epson software

Sometimes the printer has already been removed, but an Epson utility still runs at startup and searches for epnhtx13.dll.

If you no longer use the Epson software:

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Search for Epson.
  3. Uninstall the Epson utility associated with the error.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Open Task Manager > Startup apps.
  6. Disable any leftover Epson startup entry.
  7. Check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  8. Remove an old Epson printer only if it is no longer needed.

Windows 10 users can also open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the Epson entry, and choose Uninstall.

Removing an obsolete program is safer than placing an isolated DLL into a system folder. If the error disappears after removal, the missing file was being requested by software you no longer need.

Fix 5: Install Visual C++ only for a matching dependency error

epnhtx13.dll is identified as an Epson plugin, not a Visual C++ runtime component. Installing a Visual C++ package will not normally recreate it.

Use the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when the complete error also names files such as:

  • MSVCP*.dll
  • MSVCR*.dll
  • VCRUNTIME*.dll
  • api-ms-win-crt-*.dll

Download the supported packages from Microsoft, not from a DLL archive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 32-bit Epson application normally needs the x86 Redistributable, even on 64-bit Windows. Other applications may require the x64 package. Installing both can be appropriate when separate programs require different architectures, but neither package replaces the Epson plugin.

After installing the required runtime, restart Windows and launch the Epson program. If the only remaining message names epnhtx13.dll, return to the Epson repair or reinstall procedure.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Epson DLL from an application folder, so use them as a secondary repair when Windows itself is behaving incorrectly.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test the Epson application again. If it reports no integrity violations, that does not prove the Epson installation is complete. SFC does not own epnhtx13.dll.

If you prefer help tracking which Windows component is damaged rather than repeatedly guessing at commands, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the Epson program remains the definitive fix when this specific plugin is absent.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall the printer driver

A damaged driver package can leave its supporting Epson utilities incomplete.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  3. Select the Epson printer.
  4. Choose Remove if you are preparing for a clean reinstall.
  5. Open Device Manager from the Start menu.
  6. Expand Printers, Print queues, and Software devices.
  7. Right-click Epson entries related to the printer.
  8. Select Uninstall device.
  9. If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it.
  10. Restart Windows.
  11. Download the current driver and utility package for the exact model from official Epson Support.
  12. Install it and restart again.
  13. Print a Windows test page.

Do not remove unrelated printers or devices. If the Epson printer works but only an old Epson utility produces the DLL message, repair or remove that utility instead of replacing the working driver.

Manually identifying the correct package across Windows versions and printer models can involve hunting through several driver releases. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows what is wrong, while driver installation is handled by the full version. For this file, however, the exact Epson application package is still the definitive source.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore can help when the error started immediately after a driver update, application installation, or Windows change.

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error appeared.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs.
  5. Review the programs and drivers that may be removed.
  6. Select Close, then Next.
  7. Confirm the restore point.
  8. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore generally preserves personal files, but it can remove recently installed applications, drivers, and updates. If the restore does not resolve the error, install the current Epson package rather than copying a DLL from the restored system.

Fix 9: Repair a game or unrelated application

If the message appears only when launching a game, launcher, or non-Epson application, do not assume that application owns the file. An old bundled Epson component may be referenced by a startup shortcut, plugin, or shared printing feature.

Use the application’s official repair procedure:

  1. Open the launcher.
  2. Select the affected application.
  3. Open its settings or three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files.
  5. Wait for the scan to finish.
  6. Restart the application.

If the error remains only under one Windows account, test the program under another account. A corrupted user profile can make an installed program appear incomplete. If another account works, repair the original profile or move the application settings after backing them up.

Do not copy epnhtx13.dll into System32

Downloading a loose DLL from a random website is risky and commonly fails for several reasons:

  • The file may contain malware.
  • It may have the wrong architecture.
  • It may belong to a different Epson release.
  • It may lack dependent files.
  • It may not match the application’s expected path.
  • It may be unsigned or tampered with.
  • It does not repair the damaged installer that originally supplied it.

Copying the file into C:WindowsSystem32 can also create a second, confusing copy while the Epson program continues looking in its application directory.

There is no verified public standalone Epson download for epnhtx13.dll. Use the complete Epson installer for the exact printer model.

Should you use regsvr32?

Usually no.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Many application and plugin DLLs do not export that function. Running:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 epnhtx13.dll

may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not prove the file is damaged. It usually means the DLL is not a COM or ActiveX server that should be registered.

Do not run regsvr32 as a routine response to this error. Repair the Epson program that owns the file.

Should you enable Windows Features?

No Windows optional feature normally supplies epnhtx13.dll.

Do not enable random features under Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off to solve this file error. Features such as .NET Framework or legacy components may be relevant to another application’s error, but they do not replace an Epson plugin. Enable them only when the complete error or the Epson installer specifically identifies that requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Escalation checklist

If the repair still fails, collect this information before contacting Epson or Microsoft support:

  • The complete error text
  • The Epson printer model
  • The Windows version and system architecture
  • The program that displays the message
  • The original path where the DLL was expected
  • Recent Epson installs, removals, or driver updates
  • Windows Security detection details
  • The result of the Epson reinstall
  • The result of DISM and SFC
  • Any installer or Event Viewer errors

If every Epson utility has been removed but a startup message remains, inspect Task Manager > Startup apps and Settings > Apps > Installed apps for leftover Epson entries. Remove the obsolete program or reinstall the current package rather than restoring an isolated DLL.

FAQ

Is epnhtx13.dll a Windows file?

No verified evidence identifies it as a standard Windows component. It is associated with EPSON Color Printing Plugin.

Is epnhtx13.dll malware?

The filename alone does not prove that. Check its original path, digital signature, Windows Security history, and installation source. Do not restore a quarantined copy unless those details are trustworthy.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Microsoft Visual C++ fix this file?

Usually not. Install a Visual C++ Redistributable only when the complete error names a Visual C++ runtime file as well.

Can I download epnhtx13.dll separately?

Do not use a loose DLL download. Reinstall the Epson software package for the exact printer model from official Epson Support.

Does SFC restore epnhtx13.dll?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while this file belongs to an Epson application.

Is a 32-bit DLL wrong on 64-bit Windows?

No. A 32-bit application can require a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows. Install the Epson package intended for the application and printer rather than substituting an architecture-mismatched file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the safest fix?

Identify the Epson program named by the error, uninstall it if necessary, restart Windows, and reinstall the current official package for the exact Epson printer model.
