Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →crlpref.dll is a Corel application component, not a Windows system DLL. When crlpref.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the Corel product that owns the failing executable instead of downloading a loose DLL.
What crlpref.dll is
The file is associated with Corel graphics software and is commonly described as the Corel Preferences Engine. Corel crash data shows it loading from a product folder such as:
C:Program FilesCorelCorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2019Programs64CrlPref.dll
The exact product cannot be identified from the filename alone. CorelDRAW Graphics Suite is confirmed, but another Corel graphics product may own the copy on your computer.
| Item | What is known |
|---|---|
| File | crlpref.dll |
| Type | Corel application component |
| Reported role | Corel Preferences Engine |
| Typical location | The Corel product directory, often a Programs64 folder |
| Architecture | Public records show both 32-bit and 64-bit variants |
| Correct version | Must match the installed Corel product and executable |
| Windows system file | No |
Public file indexes contain version and architecture values, but Corel does not publish a complete authoritative version table for this DLL. Treat those records as identification clues, not as download targets.

Identify the failing Corel installation
Before repairing anything, find which Corel executable is producing the error.
- Close the error dialog.
- Right-click the Corel shortcut that you normally use.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the product name, release, and whether the path contains
Program Filesor another installation directory.
If the application has no working shortcut, right-click the process or shortcut that launches it and choose Open file location when available. Do not repair a different Corel release merely because it is also installed.
Fix 1: Repair the Corel installation
Repair is the safest and most likely fix for a missing, damaged, or partially removed crlpref.dll.
- Save your work and close every Corel application.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - In Programs and Features, select the installed CorelDRAW or Corel graphics product.
- Click Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same Corel application again.
Corel’s repair process is intended to restore missing or corrupt program files, shortcuts, and related registry entries. If the repair completes but the same message returns, confirm that you repaired the product matching the failing executable’s path.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A successful repair normally allows the application to start without the DLL dialog. If the program still fails, check whether the error changed from “missing” to “specified module could not be found.” That change can indicate a missing dependency rather than a missing crlpref.dll file.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine an application file after an update, repair, or scan.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event mentioning
crlpref.dll, the Corel installation folder, or the Corel executable. - Expand the event and review the original path and detection details.
Only restore or allow the file if you have confirmed that it came from the genuine Corel installation. Microsoft warns that restoring a detected file can expose the device if the file is malicious. After a confirmed false positive, repair Corel again so the file is restored from the product installer rather than from an unknown copy.

If Protection history shows no relevant event, do not assume antivirus caused the problem.
Fix 3: Check the file path and architecture
A 64-bit Corel executable needs the matching 64-bit component. A 32-bit executable needs its corresponding component. Do not mix files from separate Corel releases.
Check the installation directory:
- Open the executable’s folder from the shortcut’s Target path.
- Look for the Corel program directory, such as
Programs64. - Check whether
CrlPref.dllis present. Windows file names are normally case-insensitive, soCrlPref.dllandcrlpref.dllrefer to the same filename. - Do not copy a file from another computer or another Corel version.
- Run Repair even if a similarly named file is present.
A file can exist while still being the wrong architecture, corrupt, unsigned, or incompatible with neighboring Corel modules. The installer is the correct way to restore the matching build.
Fix 4: Clean-reinstall the exact Corel product
Use a clean reinstall when Repair is unavailable, fails, or the installation has been partially removed.
Before uninstalling, back up custom workspaces, templates, macros, presets, and other preferences that matter to you.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the exact Corel product identified from the failing executable path.
- Click Uninstall/Change and remove it.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the same product and release from Corel’s official download service.
- Install it using an account with administrator rights.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application before restoring custom files.
Do not install a different Corel release merely to obtain a file with the same name. A clean reinstall of the exact product remains the definitive fix when the application package itself is damaged.
If only one Windows user profile has the problem, test the application in another profile before removing the whole product. A profile-specific failure can involve permissions or user settings rather than a globally missing DLL.

Fix 5: Investigate missing dependencies
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that crlpref.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.
Repair Corel first. If the diagnostic specifically names a Microsoft runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll, install the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official download guidance. Installing Visual C++ blindly will not recreate crlpref.dll.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not treat crlpref.dll as a Visual C++ runtime file. It is a Corel application component.
Fix 6: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows problems
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They usually do not recreate an application-local Corel DLL, so use them when several unrelated programs also show system-file or DLL failures.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Corel again.
Microsoft documents the supported DISM and SFC sequence in its Windows repair guidance.
Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can make diagnosis slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported problems and show what its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the Corel product remains the definitive fix for a Corel-owned DLL.
If SFC reports repairs but Corel still fails, return to the Corel repair or reinstall path. If DISM and SFC report no problems, that further supports an application-specific cause.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when Corel has a wider graphics problem
A display-driver problem can affect Corel graphics applications, but there is no file-specific evidence that a driver creates or replaces crlpref.dll. Consider this step only if multiple graphics applications fail, the display driver is also reporting errors, or the problem began after a graphics update.

To check manually:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a manufacturer-provided driver, download it from the graphics hardware vendor and match it to the device and Windows architecture. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through hardware entries and guessing which driver is stale; its free scan identifies reported updates, while installation is handled by the full version, and it does not replace repairing Corel itself.
Do not uninstall a functioning display driver solely because crlpref.dll is missing.
What not to do
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, an unsigned file, the wrong architecture, or a build from a different Corel release. Copying that file into the Corel folder often leaves the real dependency or version problem unresolved.
The safe sources are the installed Corel repair process and Corel’s official installer for the exact product and release.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
crlpref.dll is not a Windows system DLL. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can create version conflicts and does not repair the Corel installation.
Do not run regsvr32 on it
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE and ActiveX components. It fails when a DLL lacks the required registration entry point, and there is no reliable evidence that crlpref.dll needs registration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not use:
regsvr32 crlpref.dll
Repair or reinstall the Corel product instead.
Do not enable random Windows Features
Windows Features are not a normal source for this application component. Enabling .NET Framework or another optional feature without a diagnostic naming it will not restore crlpref.dll.
When System Restore is appropriate
Use System Restore only if the failure began immediately after a known installation, update, or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.

System Restore can remove later applications, settings, and updates. It is a fallback, not the first repair for a damaged Corel installation.
FAQ

No. It is associated with Corel graphics software and should normally remain in the Corel product directory.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Which Corel program uses it?
CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2019 is confirmed, but the filename alone does not identify every possible owning product. Read the failing executable’s installation path.
Is crlpref.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public records show both variants. The correct architecture is the one that matches the Corel executable and installed release.
Can Visual C++ fix it?
Only when the error separately identifies a missing Visual C++ runtime dependency. Visual C++ does not replace crlpref.dll.
