pmls.dll Not Found on Windows: Identify Its Parent Program

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

pmls.dll is a third-party library associated with PremierOpinion, a VoiceFive market-research application, not a Windows system file. If Windows says pmls.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, remove the unwanted PremierOpinion installation or repair it through its legitimate software channel rather than downloading the DLL.

What this file actually does

PremierOpinion is software operated by VoiceFive, a comScore company. VoiceFive describes the product as software used by research-panel members to monitor online browsing and purchasing activity for market research.

pmls.dll is generally identified as the 32-bit PremierOpinion module. The related pmls64.dll is associated with the 64-bit side of the product. Other names that may appear alongside an old installation include pmservice.exe, pmropn.exe, and RelevantKnowledge.

This file is not part of:

  • Windows itself
  • Windows Defender
  • DirectX
  • .NET
  • Visual C++ Redistributable
  • A printer driver
  • A graphics driver
  • A motherboard or chipset driver

A copy may appear in System32, SysWOW64, a program directory, or a temporary folder. The location alone does not prove that the file is genuine. On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit components, while System32 contains 64-bit system components. Third-party software has historically used both locations.

Fix 1: Uninstall PremierOpinion first

This is the safest and most likely fix when you do not intentionally use the VoiceFive research panel.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 Settings

  1. Select Start.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. In Windows 11, select Apps, then Installed apps. In Windows 10, select Apps, then Apps & features.
  4. Search for PremierOpinion.
  5. Also look for VoiceFive, RelevantKnowledge, or another market-research entry you recognize.
  6. Select the three-dot menu beside the program and choose Uninstall. On Windows 10, select the program and choose Uninstall.
  7. Follow the removal wizard.
  8. Restart Windows.

Microsoft’s application-removal instructions are available through its official uninstall guidance.

If the program is not listed, open Control Panel from the Start menu, select Programs, choose Programs and Features, select the relevant entry, and choose Uninstall.

After restarting, check whether the message returns. If it does not, the error was caused by an orphaned PremierOpinion installation. Do not separately delete pmls.dll before removing the parent program, because the remaining software may still depend on it or restore it.

If uninstall fails

A damaged uninstaller can leave the program registered while removing only some files.

  1. Restart Windows and try the uninstall again.
  2. If it still fails, open Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter.
  3. Choose Uninstalling.
  4. Select PremierOpinion or the closest matching entry.
  5. Allow the troubleshooter to remove the broken uninstall information.
  6. Restart the computer.
  7. Run a security scan before manually deleting leftover files.

Fix 2: Scan for unwanted software

PremierOpinion-related files have been classified by security products as potentially unwanted software in some samples. That does not prove every historical installation was malware, but it does mean you should not automatically restore or whitelist the file.

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Choose Full scan.
  5. Select Scan now.
  6. Remove or quarantine anything Windows Security identifies.
  7. Restart Windows.

Microsoft provides additional guidance for protecting a PC from unwanted software.

If the file reappears, return to Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, and run Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open documents first because Windows will restart during the offline scan.

If Defender quarantined pmls.dll

To inspect the detection:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Open the detection involving pmls.dll.
  5. Review the file path, detection name, and action taken.
  6. Leave it quarantined if you do not intentionally use PremierOpinion.
  7. Remove the associated PremierOpinion installation if it remains listed in Apps or Control Panel.

Microsoft explains the consequences of restoring a quarantined item in its Protection History documentation. Restore the file only after verifying the exact path and signature, confirming that you intentionally need the software, and determining that the detection is a false positive. Restoring a file simply puts it back on the computer.

Fix 3: Remove a leftover startup reference

A missing-file message that appears immediately after sign-in often comes from an old startup entry rather than from an application you opened.

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for PremierOpinion, VoiceFive, RelevantKnowledge, pmservice, or an Unknown entry.
  4. Right-click a matching entry and choose Disable.
  5. Restart Windows.

Also check the services list:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for a service clearly belonging to PremierOpinion or VoiceFive.
  5. Double-click it.
  6. Select Stop if it is running.
  7. Set Startup type to Disabled.
  8. Select Apply, then OK.

Do not disable an unknown service solely because its name looks unfamiliar. Check its executable path first. A path pointing to a PremierOpinion directory is stronger evidence than the service name alone.

Scheduled tasks can produce the same error:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type taskschd.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  5. Review tasks whose names or Actions refer to PremierOpinion, VoiceFive, RelevantKnowledge, or pmservice.
  6. Right-click a clearly identified leftover task and choose Delete.
  7. Restart Windows.

If the message continues, open Event Viewer, select Windows Logs, then Application, and inspect entries created at the time of the error. Record the executable named in the event. The filename pmls.dll alone is not enough to identify which program is calling it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Repair the installation only if you intentionally use it

If you knowingly participate in the VoiceFive panel, do not obtain pmls.dll from a file-sharing or DLL download sites page. The current availability of an official public PremierOpinion installer cannot be assumed.

Remove the damaged installation first, restart, and use only a legitimate installer supplied through the provider’s official channel, if one is currently available. Do not copy pmls.dll from another computer. The other copy may have a different architecture, version, dependencies, signature, or unwanted modifications.

If the error names a game or another application, repair that application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps > More > Advanced options > Repair, when that option exists. If no repair option is available, uninstall and reinstall the named application through its official installer. Do not assume that an application legitimately requires PremierOpinion merely because Windows mentions pmls.dll.

Fix 5: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption

SFC and DISM do not provide replacement files for third-party PremierOpinion software. Use them when other protected Windows files are also failing, Windows features are damaged, or system corruption began after an interrupted update.

  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
  6. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its system-file repair instructions.

A successful result means Windows repaired or found no corruption in protected system components. It does not confirm that pmls.dll has been restored. If SFC reports files it could not repair, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If the only remaining message names pmls.dll, return to the PremierOpinion removal or application-repair steps.

When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed becomes impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it found; its free scan identifies problems, while repair features require the full version, and removing or reinstalling the parent application remains the definitive fix for this file.

Fix 6: Check drivers only when another device problem exists

pmls.dll is not identified as a printer, graphics, motherboard, or other hardware-driver DLL. Updating a driver is therefore not a targeted fix for this error.

If Device Manager also shows a device warning:

  1. Press Win+X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category containing the warning icon.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart if Windows installs an update.

For a specific device, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page rather than a random driver repository. Hunting through dozens of driver versions manually can obscure the actual PremierOpinion problem; Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers, while its free scan reports findings and the full version performs driver installation. Driver replacement is not required merely because pmls.dll is missing.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide COM/OLE self-registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.

Do not run:

regsvr32 pmls.dll

unless the original software provider specifically documents that procedure. A likely result is an error stating that the module loaded but DllRegisterServer was not found. That means the DLL is not a self-registering COM component, not that Windows needs a different copy.

Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference and its regsvr32 troubleshooting guide.

When System Restore is appropriate

If the error began immediately after installing software or making a system change, System Restore may remove that change while normally leaving personal files untouched.

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

You can also open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Is pmls.dll a Windows file?

No. It is associated with PremierOpinion and VoiceFive. It is not a Microsoft runtime or protected Windows component.

Is pmls.dll malware?

The filename alone cannot answer that. A genuine historical PremierOpinion file may be signed and associated with the product, but a valid signature does not prove that every file with this name is safe. An unexpected path, missing signature, modified timestamp pattern, unknown companion executable, or recurring reappearance warrants a full and Offline scan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is pmls64.dll the same file?

It is the related 64-bit counterpart. pmls.dll is generally reported as the 32-bit module, but exact paths and versions vary by installation.

Can I delete `pmls.dll?

If PremierOpinion has already been uninstalled and the file is a confirmed leftover, deleting it may be harmless. First remove the parent program and its startup, service, or scheduled-task references. Do not delete the DLL as the only repair step.

Why does the error appear after I removed PremierOpinion?

The program may have left behind a startup entry, service, scheduled task, or shortcut that still calls the DLL. Disable or remove the verified leftover reference, then restart and scan the computer.

Should I download pmls.dll from a DLL website?

No. An unofficial copy may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, lack required dependencies, or conceal the real problem. Use the parent program’s legitimate provider channel or remove the unwanted software instead.

What if the error returns after every reboot?

Inspect Startup apps, Services, Task Scheduler, and Event Viewer for the executable that requests the file. Run a full scan followed by Microsoft Defender Offline scan, and do not whitelist the file merely because its name is familiar.
