Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, note:
- Which program reports the error: Windows itself, a game, an app, or a startup item.
- When it happens: at startup, when opening one program, or after an update or driver change.
- Your Windows architecture: go to Settings > System > About and check System type.
- The exact message: “missing,” “not found,” “could not be loaded,” and “the specified module could not be found” can have different causes.

It supports the Windows proximity platform, which handles nearby-device discovery, tap interactions, NFC, and related communication scenarios through the Windows proximity API.
Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website. The safest repair source is Windows itself: Windows Update, the component store, official installation media, or Windows recovery.
1. Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete Windows servicing operation is a common reason for a protected system DLL to disappear or become damaged.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not require an immediate restart.
- Open the affected application again.
If the error has gone, the missing component was likely restored during servicing. If Windows reports that it is up to date but the error remains, continue with the repair commands below.

2. Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. System File Checker then uses that repaired store to replace damaged protected files. Run DISM first.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- When it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
A successful result may say that DISM completed successfully and that SFC found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart and run the DISM command again before repeating SFC.

3. Check whether Microsoft Defender quarantined the file
Security software can quarantine a legitimate system file after a detection or false positive. Do not restore a file merely because an application says it is missing.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand any recent detection that refers to
ProximityRtapiPal.dll. - Check the file path and detection details.
Restore the file only if you can verify that it is the genuine Microsoft-signed file in an expected Windows system directory. If the file is unsigned, stored in an unusual folder, or associated with suspicious software, leave it quarantined and run a full scan instead.
After dealing with the detection, run DISM and SFC again. Repairing Windows is safer than copying a replacement file into a system directory. Microsoft explains these decisions in its guide to Protection History.

4. Check the program that reports the error
A missing-DLL message does not always prove that the named file alone is the problem. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing.
If the message appears only when opening one application:
- Close the application.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset, if available.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
For a traditional desktop program, download its installer only from the software publisher’s official website. Run the installer and choose Repair if that option exists. Otherwise, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and install it again from the official source.
If the error appears before any visible application opens, check Task Manager > Startup apps and temporarily disable the suspect startup item. You can also open Event Viewer, select Windows Logs > Application, and inspect errors recorded at the same time as the message.
A game launcher’s file verification is useful only when the launcher owns an app-local copy. It will not repair the Windows copy of ProximityRtapiPal.dll.
5. Do not register this DLL with Regsvr32
regsvr32 is normally used for DLLs that provide a COM self-registration function such as DllRegisterServer. A Windows runtime library such as ProximityRtapiPal.dll is not normally repaired by registration.
Do not run commands such as:
regsvr32 ProximityRtapiPal.dll
This can produce another error without restoring the component. It can also make troubleshooting less clear. Microsoft describes the purpose of regsvr32 and the requirements for DLL self-registration.

6. Check the system directories and architecture
The file is normally associated with Windows system directories. Reports identify variants under locations such as:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. The names can be confusing, so do not use the folder name alone to decide where a file belongs.
To check your architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
Do not copy a DLL from another computer, another Windows build, or another architecture. A file with the right name can still have the wrong signature, dependencies, or binary compatibility. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can create additional failures.
A missing system file should be restored through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or Windows recovery rather than a standalone download.
7. Check proximity or NFC hardware only when Device Manager shows a problem
ProximityRtapiPal.dll is part of the Windows proximity platform, but it is not itself a hardware driver. Driver work is relevant only if the error coincides with a missing or malfunctioning proximity, NFC, or related device.

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand relevant categories, such as Network adapters, Bluetooth, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or any category containing an NFC or proximity device.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the status under the General tab.
- Select Driver > Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the device remains faulty, obtain the driver from the computer or device manufacturer. Do not remove a working device merely because the DLL error mentions proximity.

8. Use matching installation media if DISM cannot repair Windows
If DISM says that source files could not be found, use official Windows installation media that matches the installed edition and release.

The command has this form:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:sourcesinstall.wim /LimitAccess
Replace X: with the drive letter of the mounted installation media. The image index must also match your installed Windows edition. Do not paste this command unchanged unless the media path and image index are correct.

After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart and test again. If SFC still cannot repair files, review:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
For widespread corruption, an in-place Windows repair may be safer than replacing individual files.

Use System Restore when the error began after an update, driver installation, registry change, or other system modification.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can roll back applications, drivers, and system settings installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft provides additional guidance for System Restore.
Frequently asked questions
Is proximityrtapipal.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is identified as Proximity WinRT API PAL, associated with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Corporation. A legitimate copy should be in an expected Windows system directory and should have a valid Microsoft signature.

What does PAL mean?
Microsoft does not publicly define the internal PAL layer in detail. It is safest to understand it as an internal platform-abstraction or compatibility layer supporting Windows proximity APIs.
Is this a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET file?
No. It is a Windows system component. Reinstalling those runtimes is not a file-specific remedy unless the error also names a DLL belonging to one of those packages.
Should I download proximityrtapipal.dll?
No. Random downloads can contain malware or the wrong Windows architecture and may not include dependencies. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, official installation media, or Windows recovery.
Do I need to enable a Windows Feature?
Usually not. There is no general Windows Features checkbox that repairs this DLL. Use Windows Features only when a separate error specifically identifies an optional Windows component.
Why does a 32-bit program behave differently from a 64-bit program?
Windows can load different system-library variants depending on the program architecture. Do not substitute files between System32 and SysWOW64, and do not use a DLL from another Windows build.
What if the error appears at every startup?
Inspect Task Manager > Startup apps, Event Viewer, scheduled tasks, and recently installed software. The startup item may be calling a damaged dependency even when no application window appears.
