nmevtmsg.dll Is Missing: Repair NetMeeting Safely on Windows

The program can’t start because nmevtmsg.dll is missing from your computer.

nmevtmsg.dll is the NetMeeting Event Logging DLL, a legacy 32-bit Microsoft NetMeeting component. It is not a modern Windows runtime, DirectX file, Visual C++ component, or driver.

Other versions of the same problem include:

  • “nmevtmsg.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading nmevtmsg.dll.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because nmevtmsg.dll was not found.”
  • “nmevtmsg.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “The specified module could not be found.”

Which fix applies to you

Start with the description that matches what happened:

  • You installed or restored an old NetMeeting-dependent application: reinstall that application from its original installer or restore its complete system image.
  • The error appeared after uninstalling NetMeeting: remove the stale startup entry, shortcut, scheduled task, or application that still calls it.
  • An antivirus product quarantined the file: inspect quarantine, scan the system, and restore it only when the associated installation is trusted.
  • You copied an old program to a new PC: reinstall it properly instead of copying individual DLLs.
  • The error began after a Windows upgrade or disk-image migration: identify the old caller, then repair or remove that legacy software.
  • Several Windows programs also report damaged system files: run DISM followed by SFC.
  • The message appears beside a hardware or capture application: repair that application first. Updating a driver is relevant only when the application actually depends on that hardware.

The filename alone cannot identify the current calling program. The safest repair is to restore the original program that installed the DLL or remove the obsolete program requesting it.

What nmevtmsg.dll belongs to

nmevtmsg.dll shipped with Microsoft NetMeeting. Historical Microsoft package records list it in the NetMeeting 3.01 installation set, identified by the package name Nm3c.exe. NetMeeting was associated with the Windows XP era, but current Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations do not normally need it.

Windows XP support ended on April 8, 2014, according to Microsoft’s Windows XP lifecycle documentation. That matters because restoring NetMeeting on an internet-connected modern computer is not a normal compatibility upgrade. It is a legacy-software recovery task.

The component is historically 32-bit. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run many 32-bit applications through its compatibility layer, but a 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit DLL as its equivalent. Copying the file into System32 does not convert it.

Historical listings also show different file records across NetMeeting releases. Do not treat one reported size or version as a universal current version.

Fix 1: Identify the program requesting the DLL

Do this before downloading or copying anything.

Check the error window

Read the title bar and the text around the error. It may identify the executable that failed. Write down the program name and the path shown in any “Browse,” “Details,” or “Open file location” option.

If the error appears immediately after signing in:

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for an old conferencing, capture, messaging, or migrated application.
  4. Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location.
  5. Record the executable and its folder before disabling the startup item.

Check Event Viewer

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter eventvwr.msc and press Enter.
  3. Expand Windows Logs.
  4. Select Application.
  5. Choose Filter Current Log in the right pane.
  6. Filter for Error and review entries created at the same time as the DLL message.
  7. Open a matching entry and note the Faulting application name and path.

Inspect the application folder

If the error names an application, right-click its shortcut and choose Properties. The Target field shows which executable is being launched. A complete reinstall of that application is safer than placing a loose DLL beside the executable.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

A message saying “the specified module could not be found” can also mean that another dependency of nmevtmsg.dll is missing. The named DLL is not always the only missing file.

Fix 2: Reinstall the original NetMeeting-dependent program

This is the most likely definitive repair.

  1. Open Settings with Win+I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps on Windows 11 or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Search for NetMeeting or the application identified in the previous section.
  5. Select the application and choose Uninstall.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Reinstall it from its original installation media, preserved enterprise deployment package, or a known-good system backup.
  8. Start the program and confirm whether the error has disappeared.

If the original installer includes NetMeeting as a component, use its Repair option when available. If it does not, do not install a random copy of nmevtmsg.dll; obtain the complete original package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the program was copied from another PC, remove the copied installation and reinstall it. Copying an application folder often omits shared files, registry settings, services, and dependencies.

Check the program’s architecture

On a 64-bit Windows installation, a legitimate old application may still be 32-bit. Check the application’s documentation or installer rather than guessing. A 32-bit build may run under Windows compatibility features, while a 64-bit build cannot use this historical 32-bit component.

To try compatibility settings:

  1. Right-click the program’s executable or shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Try the Windows version specified by the application’s documentation.
  6. Select Run this program as an administrator only if the program requires it.
  7. Select Apply, then OK.
  8. Test the program again.

Compatibility mode cannot make unsupported software secure or guarantee that NetMeeting will work on current Windows.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may have removed the DLL because an old application was altered, its files were damaged, or the file was located in a suspicious folder.

  1. Open your antivirus or Windows Security application.
  2. Open Protection history, Quarantine, or the equivalent security history.
  3. Search for nmevtmsg.dll and the application that uses it.
  4. Do not restore the file yet if the program came from an unknown source.
  5. Scan the complete application folder and run a full system scan.
  6. If the installation is known to be legitimate, use the security product’s restore option.
  7. Reinstall the entire application from trusted media if the file is missing or altered.
  8. Start the program and confirm that the error is gone.

Do not disable antivirus protection to obtain a replacement DLL from an unverified website. An isolated file can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency is also missing.

Fix 4: Remove a stale startup entry or scheduled task

If NetMeeting was uninstalled but the error continues, Windows may still be launching an old component.

Check these locations:

  1. Open Settings and select Apps.
  2. Open Startup.
  3. Disable the entry associated with the removed application.
  4. Open Task Scheduler from the Start menu.
  5. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  6. Review tasks that launch the old program or point to a missing executable.
  7. Confirm the task’s Actions tab before disabling or deleting it.
  8. Check the old application’s shortcut in the Startup folder by pressing Win+R, entering shell:startup, and pressing Enter.

Do not delete an entry merely because its name is unfamiliar. Confirm its file path and publisher first. If the error stops after disabling the confirmed stale caller, removing the DLL is unnecessary.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use these commands when Windows itself is showing broader corruption, several protected files are damaged, or the problem followed a failed upgrade. They do not reinstall NetMeeting and may not restore an application-owned DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the application again.

Microsoft documents the DISM repair procedure and SFC command.

If SFC reports that it found files it could not repair, restart and run the commands again only if Windows remains unstable. Otherwise review the CBS log, use System Restore if the problem followed a recent change, or recover from a known-good image. Do not assume SFC will recreate a legacy NetMeeting file.

If you prefer not to keep hunting through DISM and SFC output to determine what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repairs are handled by the full version. Reinstalling the NetMeeting-dependent program remains the definitive fix when that program owns the missing file.

Fix 6: Repair the related application or driver

Do not install drivers simply because a DLL error appeared. nmevtmsg.dll is not identified as a driver DLL. Driver work is appropriate only when the calling program is a hardware utility, capture application, or other software whose own installation is damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair the application

  1. Open Settings with Win+I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
  4. Select the related application.
  5. Choose Advanced options if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. If Repair does not help, select Reset only after confirming that the application can recreate its settings.
  8. Test the program.

For older desktop applications without these options, uninstall and reinstall from the original installer.

Check Device Manager when hardware is involved

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the application, such as Cameras, Sound, video and game controllers, or Network adapters.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties and review the General tab for an error status.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Use Update Driver only when a trusted driver source is available.
  8. Restart Windows and test the application.

If you want to avoid hunting through hardware entries and guessing which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. For this DLL specifically, reinstalling the application that installed NetMeeting remains the primary repair.

Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong fix

Do not routinely run:

regsvr32 nmevtmsg.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Ordinary runtime, resource, and event-logging DLLs may not be self-registering. Microsoft explains this behavior in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.

Registering the file will not repair a missing dependency, restore a damaged installation, or change a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit one. Use registration only when the original application’s documentation explicitly requires it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy the file into System32

A loose DLL copied into C:WindowsSystem32 can create version conflicts, satisfy the wrong application, or introduce malware. It can also leave the real problem untouched if the application expects the file in its own installation directory or needs additional dependencies.

Avoid installing Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, .NET, or drivers by guesswork. There is no verified connection between those packages and nmevtmsg.dll.

When the old program cannot run

Current Windows may be incompatible with NetMeeting or the application that still requests it. If the program is essential:

  1. Preserve the original installer and license information.
  2. Keep the old system image unchanged.
  3. Run the software in an isolated legacy Windows environment where appropriate.
  4. Block unnecessary network access.
  5. Migrate its data to supported software.
  6. Do not use an unsupported Windows XP installation as a general internet computer.

If the program is no longer needed, remove its startup entries, scheduled tasks, shortcuts, and installed application instead of restoring the DLL.

FAQ

Is nmevtmsg.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file?

No. It is a historical NetMeeting component. A modern PC normally does not need it unless an old application or leftover startup item requests it.

Does every Windows XP installation contain it?

Do not assume that. Its presence depended on the installed NetMeeting components and software package. Historical package records show it as part of a NetMeeting installation set.

Is there a 64-bit version?

Historical records identify the component as Win32 and 32-bit. A 64-bit edition of Windows may run the calling 32-bit application, but a 64-bit application cannot use this DLL as a substitute.

Should I download nmevtmsg.dll separately?

No. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an incompatible architecture, an altered file, or a version that does not match the application. Use the original application installer, trusted installation media, or a known-good backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can System Restore fix it?

It can help when a recent uninstall, cleanup, or migration caused the problem, but it is not a replacement for reinstalling the original NetMeeting-dependent application.

Why does the error say a module is missing when the DLL is present?

The DLL may depend on another missing or damaged file. The full application installation and its dependency chain must be repaired together.
