Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →ehui.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows Media Center component, normally stored in %WINDIR%ehome; it is not a Visual C++ runtime or a general-purpose game DLL. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Media Center is no longer included, so an ehui.dll error usually points to an obsolete application or upgrade remnant rather than a missing modern Windows file.
What this file actually does
ehui.dll belongs to the Windows Media Center and eHome subsystem. Media Center components, including ehshell.exe, were installed beneath:

There is not one universal copy of ehui.dll. The correct file depends on the Windows release, service branch, language and architecture. An x86 file is not interchangeable with an x64 file, and a Vista or Windows 7 file should not be copied into a different Windows installation.
Windows Media Center was removed from Windows 10 and is not included with Windows 11. That distinction matters: restoring ehui.dll to a current Windows installation will not bring Media Center back and can create compatibility or security problems.
Error symptoms and likely causes
| Message or symptom | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
ehui.dll is missing or was not found |
Media Center is disabled, damaged or removed | Check Windows Features on a supported legacy system |
The code execution cannot proceed because ehui.dll was not found |
A Media Center executable or old application cannot find its component | Identify the calling application and repair its Windows component |
The specified module could not be found |
ehui.dll or one of its dependencies is unavailable |
Repair the component rather than copying a DLL |
The procedure entry point could not be located |
Wrong Windows version, architecture or binary | Remove the mismatched copy and restore the matching component |
ehui.dll error loading |
A startup entry, old Media Center tool or damaged installation is calling it | Check recent upgrades, software removal and startup applications |
| The error appears after an upgrade to Windows 10 or 11 | An obsolete Media Center application survived the upgrade | Repair or remove that application instead of installing ehui.dll |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | The file may be damaged, altered or falsely detected | Verify the path and signature before restoring it |
A “specified module” error does not always mean that ehui.dll itself is absent. Windows may be reporting that a dependency required by the DLL cannot load.
Fix 1: Check whether Windows Media Center is disabled
Use this only on Windows versions that included Media Center, particularly Windows 7.
- Press
Windowsand type Windows Features. - Open Turn Windows features on or off.
- Expand Media Features.
- Select Windows Media Center.
- Select OK and allow Windows to make the change.
- Restart the computer.
- Install all applicable Windows Updates and restart again.
If Media Center was disabled, enabling it should recreate or restore the files under %WINDIR%ehome. Test it by opening the Start menu and launching Windows Media Center.
If Windows Media Center is not listed, the installed edition may not support it, the component store may be damaged, or the computer may already be running Windows 10 or Windows 11. Do not download the missing file to compensate.
On Windows 7, you can also check the executable directly:
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter:
text
%WINDIR%ehome
- Press Enter.
- Look for
ehshell.exeandehui.dll.
Do not judge the file only by its name. A copy in a random application directory, Downloads folder or temporary folder is not automatically the legitimate Windows component.

Fix 2: Repair Windows component files with DISM and SFC
Use the built-in repair tools when Media Center is enabled but files are missing or damaged. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft’s normal order is DISM first, then SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to stop temporarily.
- Run:
text
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application or feature that produced the error.
DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC relies on. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when a valid source is available.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run it once more. If the result is unchanged, review:
%WINDIR%LogsCBSCBS.log
On Windows 7 and earlier, the available DISM switches and repair sources differ. Use the matching Windows installation media or the system’s repair options rather than assuming the Windows 10/11 command will work.
If repeatedly hunting through CBS logs and rerunning SFC leaves you unsure which component is damaged, Outbyte PC Repair can show detected Windows problems in a scan; its full version performs the repair, but it is optional and does not replace repairing the original Media Center installation.
Fix 3: Install the correct Windows updates
Media Center received separate updates for Windows XP Media Center Edition, Vista and Windows 7. A component defect or failed update can leave the files out of sync.
On a supported legacy Windows installation:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select System and Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install updates applicable to the exact Windows release and architecture.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check for updates again until no applicable updates remain.
Do not use a historical file version as a universal replacement. File versions and sizes vary by Windows release, language, architecture and servicing branch. An old x86 copy may appear to repair one error while causing an entry-point or bad-image error immediately afterward.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and verify the file
Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious file. Before restoring anything, confirm that the file was associated with the real Windows Media Center directory.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Find the detection involving
ehui.dll. - Check the reported path.
- Do not restore it if the path is outside
%WINDIR%ehome, the file is unsigned, or the detection concerns a recently created replacement. - If the path is correct, inspect the file’s Properties and Digital Signatures tab.
- Run a full antivirus scan after any restoration.
A genuine-looking filename is not proof of authenticity. A file named ehui.dll in an application directory, user profile, Downloads folder or temporary directory deserves additional scrutiny. If the file is unsigned or the security warning returns, remove it and repair Windows from a trusted source.
Fix 5: Undo a recent change with System Restore
Use System Restore when the error began after a driver installation, update, cleanup utility or software removal and a restore point exists.

- Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if that option appears.
- Select a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next, review the affected programs, then select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove recently installed applications, updates and drivers. If it does not restore Media Center, continue with component repair rather than copying a DLL.

The error text often identifies this problem:
- Procedure entry point not found usually indicates that the calling program found an incompatible version.
- Bad image can indicate a damaged or wrong-architecture binary.
- Module could not be found may indicate a missing dependency.
- An error beginning only after copying a DLL strongly suggests that the copied file is the cause.
Do not copy ehui.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not place it beside an unrelated application to force that application to load it. That can create DLL search-order conflicts and may expose the system to a malicious replacement.
Restore the file through Windows Features, Windows Update, SFC, matching installation media or a repair installation. Those methods preserve the architecture and servicing context of the installed system.
Fix 7: Treat Windows 10 and 11 differently
Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not include Windows Media Center. If an old program asks for ehui.dll after an upgrade, the missing file is usually an obsolete dependency.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallUse this order:
- Identify the program shown in the error or Event Viewer.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the old Media Center application or utility.
- Select its menu button and choose Uninstall or Advanced options → Repair, if available.
- Reinstall a current replacement from the original developer if one exists.
- If the software specifically requires the old Media Center environment, run it in the original supported Windows environment or a compatible virtual machine.
Do not attempt to retrofit Windows Media Center DLLs into Windows 10 or Windows 11. If the error appears during startup, inspect Task Manager → Startup apps and remove the obsolete entry after confirming which program owns it.
Fix 8: Check related tuner or capture drivers only when indicated
Media Center may depend on TV tuner and capture hardware, but a driver problem does not normally justify downloading ehui.dll.
If the error is accompanied by missing tuner hardware:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers and Other devices.
- Look for a warning icon on the tuner or capture device.
- Right-click it and choose Update driver.
- If Windows cannot find a driver, obtain the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart and test Media Center again.
If a driver update has left you manually comparing hardware IDs and versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; the full version performs driver installation, but it is optional and does not replace repairing Media Center itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy common DLL fixes do not apply
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables first
ehui.dll is a Windows Media Center component, not a confirmed Visual C++ runtime file. Installing redistributables may be appropriate when another error identifies a missing runtime, but it is not an evidence-based first fix for this file.
Do not reinstall DirectX or .NET at random
DirectX and .NET repairs do not restore the Windows Media Center eHome component. Use them only when the application’s own documentation or a separate error identifies that dependency.
Do not run regsvr32 merely because the file ends in .dll
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that export DllRegisterServer, typically self-registering COM or ActiveX libraries. A normal Media Center implementation DLL should not be treated as a self-registering component.
Running:
regsvr32 ehui.dll
is therefore not a standard repair. An error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found is expected for a DLL that does not provide that export. It does not mean the file needs to be downloaded or registered another way.
When repair or reinstall is justified
Use a Windows repair installation when:
- Windows Features cannot enable Media Center on a supported release.
- DISM and SFC cannot repair the component.
- System Restore does not resolve the damage.
- Windows Update repeatedly fails for the relevant component.
- Multiple protected Windows files are missing or corrupt.
Use a clean reinstall only after backing up personal data and exhausting less destructive repair options. On Windows 10 or 11, reinstalling the operating system will not restore Media Center. The correct solution there is normally removing or replacing the obsolete application that requests ehui.dll.
FAQ
Should I download ehui.dll from a DLL website?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture or a version from a different Windows release. They also do not repair the component that caused the file to disappear.
Where should the real file be?
For Windows Media Center installations, the expected location is under:
%WINDIR%ehome
A different location is not automatically malicious, but it requires verification of the owning application, digital signature and antivirus result.
Recommended Free Tools
Does Windows 11 need ehui.dll?
No. Windows Media Center is not included with Windows 11. An application requesting it is generally obsolete or incompatible.
Why does “procedure entry point could not be located” appear?
The program found a DLL, but it is the wrong build, architecture or version. Restore the matching Windows component instead of replacing the file manually.
Can I register the file with regsvr32?
Normally no. The extension alone does not make a DLL self-registering, and Media Center repair does not normally involve regsvr32.
What if the error names an old Media Center tool?
Repair or reinstall that tool from its original supported source, or remove it if it is no longer compatible. If it requires the old Media Center SDK or runtime, replacing the operating-system DLL is not a reliable substitute.
