winbiostorageadapter.dll is a Microsoft Windows component used by the Windows Biometric Framework. If an application reports that winbiostorageadapter.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, record:
- Which program displays the error
- Whether it appears at startup, when signing in with Windows Hello, or when opening a specific feature
- Whether fingerprint or face recognition also stopped working
- Whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the error began after a Windows update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or antivirus action
The normal location is:
%WINDIR%System32WinBioPlugInswinbiostorageadapter.dll
Microsoft identifies this as the built-in storage adapter for biometric template databases. It belongs to Windows, although a third-party program, fingerprint reader, or Windows Hello camera may be the component that reports the error.
Fix 1: Repair Windows system files
This is the safest first repair for a genuinely missing or damaged file.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter and wait for the operation to finish.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, normally using Windows Update as its source. Do not close the window while it is working.
#1 Best Overall
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
Restart Windows when both commands finish, then try the affected program again.
Interpret the result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows system files were not detected as damaged.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat
sfc /scannow. - DISM cannot find the source files: Continue to the Windows Update and repair options below.
Repeating SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can show the problems it detects in a scan and its full version performs the repair, but it is optional. DISM and SFC remain the built-in Microsoft repair path.
Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
A damaged or incomplete servicing operation can leave Windows components unavailable.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
After the second check, run DISM and SFC again if the DLL error remains.
Fix 3: Use Windows 11’s repair reinstall
Windows 11 may offer a repair option that reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and keep the computer connected to power.
The option is not available on every Windows installation. If it is absent, use official Windows 11 installation media to perform an in-place repair. Choose the option that preserves personal files and applications, and confirm the selections before starting.
For Windows 10, use official Windows installation media and perform an in-place repair installation. Do not replace the file with a copy taken from another computer.
Fix 4: Repair the biometric device driver
DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They do not repair every problem in an OEM fingerprint-reader or Windows Hello camera driver.
Use Device Manager when the DLL error appears together with a failed fingerprint reader, face sign-in, or biometric device.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Biometric devices.
- For Windows Hello Face, also expand Cameras.
- Right-click the relevant fingerprint sensor or camera.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal. Do not select an option that removes unrelated driver packages unless you understand what it does.
- Restart Windows.
- Allow Windows to reinstall the device if it detects it automatically.
- If necessary, install the driver supplied by the computer or sensor manufacturer.
Reinstalling this driver repairs the hardware-driver layer. It does not guarantee that it will restore a missing Windows component, so complete the DISM and SFC steps as well.
Finding the exact driver can involve checking the computer model, hardware ID, architecture, and Windows version. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers it identifies as outdated, and the full version handles the driver installation, but it is not required. For the most controlled repair, use the driver provided by the PC or sensor manufacturer.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can quarantine a system file or a related driver. Do not immediately disable antivirus protection or allow the file back.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to
winbiostorageadapter.dll, Windows Hello, or the biometric driver. - Open an entry to inspect its original path and detection details.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of these are clear:
- The original path is the expected Windows location
- The file has a valid Microsoft signature
- The detection is confirmed to be a false positive
- Windows Security or the security vendor provides a trustworthy resolution
If the file was found in a temporary folder or beside an unfamiliar executable, do not restore it. Run a full scan. If the file changed unexpectedly, was quarantined repeatedly, or other Windows files are damaged, run Microsoft Defender Offline from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
Fix 6: Remove a wrong DLL copy from the program folder
Windows can search an application’s folder before it searches system directories. A manually downloaded DLL beside a program executable can therefore be loaded instead of the genuine Windows component.
Check the folder of the program named in the error. If you find a manually copied winbiostorageadapter.dll there:
- Close the program.
- Do not delete the file immediately. Rename it to something such as
winbiostorageadapter.dll.old. - Repair or reinstall the affected application using its official installer.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
A 32-bit or older Windows file can also be incompatible with a current installation. Do not copy a file from Windows 7, Windows 8, another computer, or an unofficial archive into System32 or WinBioPlugIns. The correct file must match the installed Windows build and architecture.
Fix 7: Check whether only one user profile is affected
If Windows Hello works for another user but fails in one profile, compare the behavior before making system-wide changes.
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts.
- Select Other users.
- Add or use another local test account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Test the biometric device or the affected program.
If the error occurs only in one profile, the problem may involve that profile’s settings, credentials, policy, or biometric enrollment rather than the DLL itself. Avoid deleting biometric databases or making destructive registry changes as a first step. Re-enroll Windows Hello only after confirming that the driver and Windows files are healthy.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation, update, cleanup tool, or security-product change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove drivers or applications installed after the selected restore point. Test the program and biometric device after Windows restarts.
Why an application may say the DLL is missing
The message is a generic Windows loader or application error. It does not prove that the file itself is absent.
The underlying problem may be:
- The Windows file is damaged
- A dependent system component cannot load
- Windows servicing is incomplete
- A biometric driver is missing or incorrectly registered
- Antivirus software quarantined a file
- An incompatible private copy is beside the application
- The application is using the wrong architecture
- The calling program has an installation problem
If only one program reports the error and Windows Hello works normally, repair that program from its official installer. If several programs and biometric features fail, prioritize Windows servicing and the device driver.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It applies to DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point.
The WinBio storage adapter uses the Windows Biometric Framework contract, including WbioQueryStorageInterface. Running:
Rank #4
regsvr32 winbiostorageadapter.dll
may produce a registration error and will not repair Windows biometric servicing. Use DISM, SFC, Windows repair, or Device Manager instead.
Why downloading the DLL is unsafe
There is no supported standalone Microsoft download package for the WinBio Storage Adapter. Random DLL download sites may provide:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Malware or modified files
- An incompatible 32-bit or 64-bit build
- A file from an older Windows release
- A version that does not match your Windows servicing state
- A replacement that hides the real component-store or driver problem
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows 11’s Reinstall now recovery option where available, official Microsoft Windows installation media, and the computer or sensor manufacturer’s official driver package.
FAQ
Is winbiostorageadapter.dll safe?
It is a Microsoft Windows biometric component when it is in the expected Windows directory and has a valid Microsoft signature. Location and signature matter. A copy in an unfamiliar application or temporary folder requires investigation.
Is this a fingerprint-reader or face-recognition DLL?
It is part of the Windows Biometric Framework’s storage layer. Fingerprint readers and Windows Hello cameras use other driver components as well, so repairing the device driver may be necessary even when this Windows file is intact.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Copying an arbitrary DLL can create an architecture or build mismatch and can cause Windows to load the wrong file. Repair Windows through DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or official installation media.

If Windows Hello still fails, investigate the biometric driver, camera or sensor, firmware, policy, service, security software, or affected user profile. A clean SFC result does not prove that the hardware driver is working.
What if the file is missing but I do not use Windows Hello?
Find the program or process requesting it and inspect Event Viewer for the related error. Do not download the DLL merely because an application mentions it. If no legitimate Windows feature or program requires it, scan the system and check for a rogue copy.
When is a full Windows repair justified?
Use an in-place repair when DISM cannot restore the component, Windows Update cannot provide repair files, or multiple Windows components remain damaged. Preserve apps and personal files during the repair and back up important data first.
