chxuserdictds.dll is a Microsoft Windows file associated with Microsoft IME, so the safest fix is to repair Windows or reinstall the affected language feature. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL or copying one into a program folder.
What this file actually does
ChxUserDictDS.dll is identified in public file records as part of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft IME. IME components support language input, keyboard layouts, and related user-dictionary functions.
A reported normal location is:
C:WindowsSystem32InputMethodSHAREDChxUserDictDS.dll
A public Windows 10 record identifies Microsoft Corporation as the company and Microsoft Windows as the signer. It also lists the exported functions DllGetClassObject and DllCanUnloadNow. The record does not list DllRegisterServer, which matters because it means ordinary DLL registration is not an evidence-based repair for this file. (File identity and export record)
Public catalogs also contain older Windows records, including Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 examples. Those entries are build-specific. They do not prove that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation has the same file version, size, architecture, or duplicate copy.

What the error usually means
Windows-style messages can include:
- “The program can’t start because ChxUserDictDS.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because ChxUserDictDS.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading ChxUserDictDS.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “ChxUserDictDS.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not identify one universal cause. In particular, “The specified module could not be found” can mean that the named file exists but a dependency it needs is missing.
| Symptom or timing | More likely explanation | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| The file is absent from the reported Windows path | Component corruption, incomplete servicing, or deletion | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| The error began after changing a keyboard or language | Damaged or incomplete IME feature | Reinstall the language and input features |
| Windows Security lists the file in Protection history | Quarantine or a detection | Investigate the detection before restoring |
| The error started after an update or rollback | Bad servicing state or changed system files | Updates, System Restore, or Windows repair |
| Only one game or application fails | The application may have a missing dependency or wrong search path | Use that program’s official repair option |
| The file exists but will not load | Corruption, wrong architecture, bad dependency, or an inauthentic file | Check path, signature, application, and Windows repair |
Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then restart
Start with the supported repair path. Windows servicing can restore or replace protected components without you having to guess which file belongs to which build.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately request a restart.
- Reopen the application or perform the input action that produced the error.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not assume that a successful update check means the component store is healthy.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Run DISM first. SFC uses the repaired Windows component store as its source for protected system files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Keep the Command Prompt window open if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application, language, or keyboard feature.
Microsoft documents DISM as a tool for repairing the Windows image and component store, while SFC scans and repairs protected system files. (Microsoft repair guidance)
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If DISM cannot find the repair source, use a matching Windows installation source as Microsoft describes. Do not point DISM at an arbitrary DLL download.

If you are tired of hunting through repair output and repeating SFC/DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows repair remains the correct first-line fix.
Fix 3: Reinstall the affected language or IME feature
If the problem appeared after removing a language, changing a keyboard layout, or installing a language pack, refresh that feature.

- Select Time & language.
- Open Language & region.
- Find the affected language under Preferred languages.
- Select the language’s More button.
- Choose Language options.
- Review the installed language features and keyboard layouts.
- Remove an affected keyboard or language only if you know it is the feature that changed.
- Choose Add a language if the language is no longer listed.
- Select the language and choose Next.
- Select the required language features, then choose Install.
- Restart Windows and test typing again.
Microsoft provides the language installation and keyboard-management procedures through Language & region. The exact language package containing this DLL is not established here, so do not search for a supposed standalone IME package by filename. (Microsoft language-pack guidance) (Microsoft keyboard and input settings)
Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A missing file may have been removed by security software, but the filename alone is not enough reason to restore it.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
ChxUserDictDS.dll. - Open the detection to review its location, threat details, and action taken.
- Compare the original path with the expected Windows path.
- Check the file’s Microsoft signature if a file is still present.
- Only restore or allow the item if you have validated that it is the genuine Microsoft file and understand why Defender flagged it.
- Restart Windows and run DISM followed by SFC.
Microsoft warns that allowing a malicious file can put the device at risk. If the detection is unclear, leave the file quarantined, run a full scan, and repair Windows instead. (Microsoft Protection history)
Fix 5: Verify the path and Microsoft signature
A file with the right name can still be damaged, replaced, or located where it should not be.

- Open Digital Signatures if that tab is available.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that it identifies Microsoft Windows.
Do not treat an online filename, claimed checksum, or matching file size as proof of authenticity. Do not replace a signed Windows component with a copy from another Windows build. A file can be present and still be incompatible or have a missing dependency.

Fix 6: Repair the application named in the error
If the message appears only when launching one application, identify that application before changing Windows files.
- Write down the complete error text.
- Note whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit if its documentation states this.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its More button.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair, then test the application.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, use the application’s official installer to reinstall it.
- For a game launcher, use its built-in Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair function.
- Restart Windows before testing again.
Never copy ChxUserDictDS.dll into the application’s folder unless the application’s own vendor documentation specifically requires it. If only one program fails, the named DLL may be present and the actual problem may be a missing dependency, an incorrect search path, or an architecture mismatch.
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows while using different dependency and search-path rules. Do not copy a 32-bit or 64-bit file based only on the folder name. System32 does not automatically mean 32-bit; on 64-bit Windows it normally contains native 64-bit system binaries.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when the symptoms point to input hardware
A keyboard driver is not the same thing as an IME DLL, so do not install random drivers simply because the error involves typing. Consider driver repair when the problem also includes a keyboard that disappears, stops responding, or shows an error in Device Manager.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the affected keyboard.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- If the device has a warning icon, right-click it, choose Uninstall device, restart, and let Windows detect it again.
If you are manually checking many hardware vendors and guessing which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver problems; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected application.
Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong fix
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft’s documentation describes it as a registration utility, not a general-purpose DLL repair command. (Microsoft regsvr32 documentation)
The available export record for ChxUserDictDS.dll lists DllGetClassObject and DllCanUnloadNow, not DllRegisterServer. Running this command is therefore not an evidence-based repair:

regsvr32 ChxUserDictDS.dll
It may simply report that the entry point was not found. Registering the file will not rebuild a damaged Windows component, reinstall an IME feature, restore a quarantined file safely, or supply a missing dependency.

If the error began immediately after an update, language change, driver installation, or other system change, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier working state.
- Press Win+R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Choose Next, review the affected programs, and select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restore.
- Test the affected feature.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs without affecting personal files. (Microsoft System Restore)
If no suitable restore point exists, or the restore fails, use the next repair option.
Fix 9: Reinstall the current Windows version
On supported Windows 11 systems, Microsoft may provide a repair-reinstall option that preserves apps, files, and settings.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Look for Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the device connected to power.
If that option is unavailable, perform an in-place repair using official Windows installation media. Back up important files first, start Setup from within Windows, and choose the option that preserves personal files, settings, and applications when offered. Do not download the DLL separately
Random DLL download pages create several problems:
- The file may contain malware.
- It may be from the wrong Windows build.
- It may have the wrong architecture.
- Its signature may be invalid or absent.
- It may be missing dependencies.
- It may conceal the component corruption that caused the error.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component repair, Microsoft language features, System Restore, and official Windows installation media. If one application is the only failing program, use that application’s official installer or repair function instead.
If the error still remains
Record these details before making further changes:
- The complete error message
- The application or game that displays it
- Whether typing or only that application is affected
- Your Windows edition and build
- Whether the file exists in the expected path
- Its digital-signature status
- Any recent update, rollback, language change, quarantine event, cleanup, or system-image restore
- The result reported by DISM and SFC
If the file repeatedly disappears, repairs fail, or other Windows components are also damaged, run a trusted full malware scan and investigate disk health and Windows logs. Persistent corruption may require System Restore or an in-place Windows repair.
FAQ
Is chxuserdictds.dll a Microsoft file?
Public metadata identifies ChxUserDictDS.dll as a Microsoft Windows file associated with Microsoft IME and Microsoft Corporation. Verify the path and digital signature on the affected computer rather than trusting the filename alone.
Should I download chxuserdictds.dll?
No. Restore it through Windows servicing or the relevant language feature. An isolated download can be malicious, incompatible, or incapable of fixing a missing dependency.
Is this a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET file?
No authoritative evidence connects this file to those runtimes. Treat it as a Windows and Microsoft IME component.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I run regsvr32?
Generally, no. The available export information does not list DllRegisterServer, so registration is not the appropriate repair.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
The named DLL may depend on another missing or incompatible module. Check the application named in the error and repair Windows or that application rather than replacing the visible file blindly.
Does every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer contain the same file?
Not necessarily. Public records show build-specific examples, but they do not establish one universal version, size, architecture, or presence for every Windows installation.
