atidxx32.dll is a genuine AMD Radeon graphics-driver component, not a standalone Windows file. If Windows says it is missing, cannot load it, or identifies it as the faulting module, repair or roll back the AMD display driver instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is the 32-bit DirectX driver module used by AMD graphics software. A 32-bit game or application can load it on 64-bit Windows, so its presence does not mean Windows itself is 32-bit.
First, identify which problem you have
There are two different situations involving atidxx32.dll.
A missing-file error
These messages usually appear when starting a game or application:

- “The program can’t start because atidxx32.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “atidxx32.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting atidxx32.dll.”
- “atidxx32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
This generally indicates that the AMD driver installation is incomplete, corrupted, mismatched, or partially removed.
A crash naming the file
Event Viewer or a crash report may instead show:
Faulting module name: atidxx32.dll
Exception code: 0xc0000005
That does not prove that the DLL itself is defective. The underlying cause may be an incompatible driver revision, a game’s rendering path, an overlay, an overclock, memory corruption, or unstable graphics hardware.
Start with the driver repair steps below for either type of error.
1. Reinstall the correct AMD graphics driver
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most likely fix. Do not begin by copying atidxx32.dll into a system folder.

Check your GPU and current driver
- Press
Win+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Write down the exact AMD Radeon model.
- Right-click the adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the Driver Provider, Driver Date, and Driver Version.
You can also check AMD Software:
- Open Start and search for AMD Software.
- Open the application.
- Select the settings or system information area.
- Record the Radeon model and installed driver version.
Download the driver from AMD’s official Drivers and Support page. Select the exact GPU, Windows edition, and system architecture. AMD’s current auto-detection process is intended for supported 64-bit Windows systems, while older Radeon products may require a legacy driver.
For a laptop with switchable graphics, check the laptop manufacturer’s support page first. The manufacturer’s validated package may be safer than AMD’s generic package when the laptop depends on custom brightness controls, sleep behavior, or integrated and discrete GPU switching.
Install the driver normally
- Close games, launchers, browsers, recording software, and overlays.
- Run the AMD driver installer.
- Choose the recommended installation.
- If the installer offers Factory Reset or Clean Install, select it when a normal update has already failed.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Start the affected application again.
A successful repair usually removes the missing-file message and lets the program reach its main window. In Device Manager, the adapter should appear without a warning icon, and AMD Software should report the installed driver normally.
When manually hunting through driver versions and comparing hardware IDs becomes repetitive, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the issue, while driver installation through the full version is optional. For this AMD-specific problem, reinstalling the correct AMD or laptop-manufacturer package remains the definitive fix.
2. Use AMD Cleanup Utility, then reinstall
Time needed: 20–40 minutes
Use this step when the installer fails, the driver keeps reverting, the adapter has a warning icon, or the error returns immediately after a normal installation.

AMD Cleanup Utility removes previously installed AMD graphics and audio drivers. It does not remove AMD chipset drivers, and AMD states that it creates a restore point before cleanup.
- Download AMD Cleanup Utility from AMD’s official support site.
- Save your correct Radeon driver installer before starting cleanup.
- Close open applications.
- Run the Cleanup Utility.
- Accept the prompt to restart into Safe Mode if offered.
- Let the utility remove the existing AMD display components.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Run the Radeon driver installer you downloaded earlier.
- Select Factory Reset or Clean Install if available.
- Restart again.
Do not interrupt the cleanup or copy a DLL into the game’s installation directory afterward. The driver installer should place the correct 32-bit and 64-bit components in their proper locations, which may include Windows DriverStore paths.
Test the original program before installing extra graphics utilities or overlays. If it now starts, the old installation was likely incomplete or corrupted.

3. Roll back if the error began after an update
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
The newest driver is not automatically the correct driver for every older game or Radeon architecture. If atidxx32.dll errors started immediately after an AMD update, roll back to the last known-good driver.
Roll back through Device Manager
- Press
Win+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the AMD adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Choose a reason and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected game or application.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, install the previous working package from AMD or the laptop manufacturer. Remove the current package first with AMD Cleanup Utility if repeated installations are becoming mixed together.
Record the driver version that works. That gives you a useful reference if Windows or AMD later offers a newer package that reintroduces the crash.
4. Check whether security software quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A security product may remove or quarantine a driver component. Do not assume every detection is a false positive.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
atidxx32.dllor an AMD driver package. - Expand the event and inspect the original path and detection details.
Only restore or allow the file when the original location, AMD signature, and driver package are consistent. If Windows Security reports malware rather than a generic quarantine, leave the detection isolated, scan the system, and reinstall the driver from AMD.

A clean reinstall is usually safer than restoring an isolated file manually. Do not download a second copy to replace the quarantined one.
5. Verify the file’s path and signature
Time needed: 5 minutes
This helps distinguish a genuine driver component from a suspicious file with the same name.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Open Details while the affected application is running.
- If the application is listed, right-click it and choose Open file location.
- For the DLL itself, use the application’s error details, Event Viewer, or a file search to locate
atidxx32.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab.
- Check the Details tab for company information and version data.
Legitimate metadata may identify Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.; older builds may identify ATI Technologies Inc. Normal driver installations can store the file below a long C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository... path. Do not move it.
Known metadata includes 32-bit builds such as 8.17.10.648, 8.17.10.569, 8.17.10.436, and 8.15.10.163. These are not a complete version history, and the file size can vary by driver package.
If the file is in a temporary folder, a random application directory, or a download folder and has no valid AMD signature, scan it and remove it according to your security software’s guidance. Reinstall the driver from the official source rather than trusting that copy.
6. Repair the game or launcher
Time needed: 5–30 minutes
If the AMD driver is healthy but only one game or launcher fails, its own files may be damaged.
For Steam:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch the game.
Other launchers generally provide a Repair, Scan, or Verify command near the game’s settings. Use that command rather than replacing atidxx32.dll inside the game folder.

7. Repair Windows components
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Use this step when Windows Update is failing, several unrelated programs are damaged, or Windows reports broader component errors. SFC and DISM are secondary repairs here because atidxx32.dll belongs to the AMD graphics driver, not Windows.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows image, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. These commands should not be expected to reliably restore an AMD driver DLL.
When repeating repair commands without knowing what changed is taking longer than the underlying diagnosis, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show reported Windows issues; its free scan identifies problems, while repair through the full version is optional. Reinstalling the AMD driver remains the direct fix for an atidxx32.dll driver component.
Also install pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart and test again.
8. Use System Restore after a recent system change
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use System Restore when the problem began after a driver installation, Windows update, or graphics utility change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Confirm the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore does not replace a damaged driver with an arbitrary DLL. It returns selected system files and settings to an earlier state. If no suitable restore point exists, return to the clean AMD driver installation steps.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not normally run:
regsvr32 atidxx32.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. atidxx32.dll is an ordinary graphics-driver runtime module, not a normal COM or ActiveX component. Registration will not repair a missing or incompatible AMD driver and may produce another error.
Likewise, do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX runtimes, or .NET as the first response. Repair those components only when the application reports that one of their own files is missing.

Why this error happens
| Cause | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| Corrupted or incomplete AMD driver | Run Cleanup Utility, then install the correct package |
| Buggy or incompatible driver revision | Install a newer recommended package or roll back |
| Antivirus quarantine | Inspect Protection history and reinstall safely |
| Damaged game or launcher files | Use its repair or verification feature |
| Failed Windows update or component corruption | Update Windows, then run DISM and SFC |
| Overlay, overclock, or unstable hardware | Disable overlays, return clocks to default, and test stability |
| Laptop driver mismatch | Prefer the laptop manufacturer’s validated package |
Current AMD packages may not contain the same legacy atidxx32.dll used by older Radeon products. Its absence from a newer package does not automatically mean that package is incomplete.
What not to do
- Do not download
atidxx32.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Do not copy a DLL from another computer.
- Do not replace the file with a different AMD driver version.
- Do not install only the 64-bit companion when a 32-bit application needs the 32-bit module.
- Do not move the file into
System32,SysWOW64, or the game directory. - Do not repeatedly run
regsvr32against it.
Random downloads can contain malware or the wrong architecture, signing information, dependencies, or driver revision. They also leave the damaged AMD installation in place, so the same error or a new crash often returns.

FAQ
Is atidxx32.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an AMD/ATI Radeon display-driver component. It is not a Microsoft system DLL, Visual C++ runtime, .NET component, or standalone DirectX redistributable.
Why is a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows?
A 32-bit game or application needs 32-bit graphics-driver components. Windows can run those applications through its 32-bit compatibility layer while the operating system itself remains 64-bit.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhich program installed it?
Usually the AMD Radeon graphics-driver package installed it. The application that reports the error may simply be the first program that tries to load the driver.
Is the file safe?
A file with this name can be legitimate when it is in a normal AMD driver location and has valid AMD or ATI publisher metadata. Verify its path and digital signature rather than trusting the filename alone.
Why does Event Viewer call it the faulting module?
It was the module involved when the process crashed. That does not establish that the file alone caused the failure. Driver compatibility, application rendering, overlays, overclocks, memory, and hardware can all contribute.
What details should I collect before asking for help?
Record the exact error text, affected application, Windows version, Radeon model, driver version, file path, digital-signature result, and any exception code such as 0xc0000005. Also note whether the problem began after a driver update, Windows update, game update, or hardware change.
