wsmagent.dll is a protected Microsoft Windows component used by Windows Remote Management, or WinRM. If Windows reports that wsmagent.dll is missing or could not be loaded, repair Windows servicing first instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
The file description is WinRM Agent. WinRM is Microsoft’s implementation of WS-Management, the Windows service used for remote administration and management tasks. PowerShell remoting, Server Manager, Hyper-V management, enterprise-management agents, and other software can invoke WinRM.
Microsoft documents WinRM as an operating-system component rather than a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, game dependency, or ordinary third-party application DLL. See Microsoft’s WinRM overview.
On a normal Windows installation, the protected file is usually found under:

C:WindowsSystem32wsmagent.dllC:WindowsSysWOW64wsmagent.dllfor the 32-bit component on 64-bit Windows
The names are confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files. A missing file in SysWOW64 is not automatically a problem on 32-bit Windows, where that directory may not exist.
There is no single safe universal version or file size. Windows release, build, servicing level, architecture, and language affect the installed file. Do not select a DLL based on a version number shown on an archive page.
What the error usually means
The exact program cannot be identified from the filename alone. The application showing the message may be WinRM itself, PowerShell remoting, a management console, or software that depends on WinRM.
| Symptom | Likely interpretation | First response |
|---|---|---|
| “wsmagent.dll is missing” | The file is absent, quarantined, or Windows cannot access it | Check security history, then run DISM and SFC |
| “wsmagent.dll was not found” | The process could not locate the expected architecture or dependency | Check the path, application context, and Windows integrity |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The named DLL or one of its dependencies may be unavailable | Inspect event logs and repair Windows components |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” | The file may be corrupted or from the wrong Windows build or architecture | Restore it through Windows servicing |
| WinRM commands fail while the file exists | WinRM service, listener, firewall, policy, or authentication may be damaged | Inspect and repair WinRM configuration |
| The error appears in only one application | That application may be damaged or invoking WinRM incorrectly | Repair the application after checking Windows |
Fix 1: Identify Windows, architecture, and the file path
First establish which Windows installation and process are affected.

One-click scans. No signup required.
- Right-click Start and select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Select Yes when User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run:
Get-ComputerInfo | Select-Object WindowsProductName, WindowsVersion, OsBuildNumber, OsArchitecture
- Check both standard locations:
Get-ChildItem "$env:windirSystem32wsmagent.dll","$env:windirSysWOW64wsmagent.dll" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
Select-Object FullName,Length,VersionInfo
If a path is displayed, note its location and version information. Do not copy it into an application folder.
To check a file’s signature:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the reported file.
- Right-click
wsmagent.dlland choose Properties. - Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
A genuine Windows file should have a valid Microsoft signature. If the file is outside the normal Windows component locations, has no valid signature, or was recently replaced, treat that as a security concern rather than attempting to register it.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest general repair when the file is missing, corrupted, or damaged during servicing.
- Right-click Start.
- Choose Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. It can remain at one percentage for a while.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after SFC completes.
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install pending updates and restart again if Windows requests it.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC uses that store to check and restore protected system files. Microsoft’s repair a Windows image and SFC command documentation explains these tools.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run the same sequence again. If DISM cannot obtain repair files from Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source with the /Source option. The source must closely match the installed Windows edition and build.
For a targeted check after confirming the correct architecture, run:
sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSystem32wsmagent.dll
Replace the path if the affected process uses the 32-bit component or Windows is installed on another drive.
When you are repeatedly hunting through repair commands and cannot tell which protected component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate repair route for this Microsoft component.
Fix 3: Check Defender quarantine and security software
Antivirus software, cleanup utilities, malware removal, or disk corruption can remove or damage a protected DLL.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry naming
WsmAgent.dll, WinRM, or a related Windows component. - Open the detection and review its path, detection name, and action.
- Run Protection updates → Check for updates.
- Start a Quick scan. Use a Full scan if the file was unexpectedly removed or replaced.
Do not restore the file automatically. Restore it only if all of the following are true:
Rank #2
- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
- It came from the genuine Windows directory.
- Its Microsoft digital signature is valid.
- A current Defender scan does not identify it as malware.
- It was not obtained from a DLL download site.
If Defender detects the file again after restoration, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection. Microsoft explains the risks of restoring items in Protection History.
For persistent or suspicious replacement, run Microsoft Defender Offline scan from Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options. Save important work first because Windows restarts during the scan.
Fix 4: Repair WinRM configuration when the file exists
Do not use WinRM configuration commands to replace a missing DLL. They are useful when wsmagent.dll exists but WinRM itself is not working.
Open Terminal (Admin) and run:
winrm enumerate winrm/config/listener
winrm get winrm/config
If the commands return configuration, the service is responding. If the listener is missing or configuration is damaged, run:
winrm quickconfig
Read the prompt carefully and confirm the change if it matches your intended network profile. Microsoft says this command starts the WinRM service, configures a listener, and creates the appropriate firewall exception for the current profile.
For a broken listener, Microsoft also documents:
winrm invoke Restore winrm/Config
winrm quickconfig
Test again with:
winrm get winrm/config
If this succeeds but the original application still fails, the cause may be authentication, firewall policy, certificates, permissions, or an application-specific dependency rather than the DLL. Microsoft’s WinRM installation and configuration and WinRM troubleshooting pages cover these distinctions.
Fix 5: Repair the application that triggers the error
If the message appears only when opening one management program, check that program after repairing Windows.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application and test again.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and choose Reset, if appropriate.
- Otherwise uninstall and reinstall the application from its official vendor or Microsoft source.
Do not place a downloaded wsmagent.dll beside the application’s executable. That can force the program to load an incompatible copy while leaving the Windows component damaged.
If the application is an enterprise management agent, ask the administrator whether it requires a particular WinRM policy, listener, certificate, or service account. If it is a Microsoft management tool, repair Windows first and then reinstall the tool only if its own files are damaged.
Fix 6: Check Windows features and services
WinRM is an operating-system capability, but optional management features and services can affect how it is used.
To inspect Windows features:
- Press Windows key, type Windows Features.
- Open Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review only features relevant to the application, such as management or remote-administration components.
- Do not disable or enable unrelated features merely to replace
wsmagent.dll. - Restart if Windows applies a feature change.
To inspect the service:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Windows Remote Management (WS-Management).
- Check its status and startup type.
- Start it only if the application requires WinRM and your organization permits it.
Changing the service state will not restore a deleted DLL. If the file is absent, return to DISM and SFC.

A driver is not the normal cause of a missing wsmagent.dll. However, if the error began after a hardware-management update, remote-management agent update, or device installation, check the related device.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the category connected to the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel.
- Restart and test the original application.
If a recent driver caused the management software to fail, use Roll Back Driver when available. Do not replace wsmagent.dll as a driver fix.

When identifying stale drivers manually means checking many devices and comparing versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; its free scan shows what needs attention, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Use it only as an optional aid, and keep Windows servicing as the fix for a damaged system DLL.

Fix 8: Use System Restore or repair Windows in place
Use System Restore when the problem began after a known change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key, type Recovery.
- Open Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Confirm the restore and let Windows restart.
System Restore does not remove malware or repair a failing disk. It is a fallback after security checks and normal servicing.
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the file, perform a repair or in-place installation using official Windows media matched to the installed edition. Back up important data first. Microsoft’s official Windows 11 download page provides the appropriate installation options for supported systems.
Why manual DLL downloads and regsvr32 are unsafe
Do not download wsmagent.dll from a random DLL repository. A same-named file may contain malware, belong to another Windows build, target the wrong architecture, or introduce additional dependency errors. Microsoft does not provide a standalone current wsmagent.dll download as the normal repair method.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or official installation media instead.
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 wsmagent.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, mainly COM and OLE components. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command. Microsoft’s regsvr32 reference describes its registration purpose. A “module could not be loaded” result often means the command was inappropriate or another dependency is damaged.
If the error remains
Collect these details before escalating:
- The complete error text
- Windows edition, version, build, and architecture
- The application that displays the message
- The exact path of any
wsmagent.dllfound - Digital-signature results
- DISM and SFC result messages
- Defender Protection History entries
- Recent Windows updates, cleanup tools, antivirus actions, or software installs
- Relevant entries in Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application and System
- Whether
winrm get winrm/configworks - Whether the problem affects one application or the whole computer
If every repair succeeds but the error returns, check disk health, recent software, startup entries, security logs, and management agents that may be repeatedly deleting or replacing the file.
FAQ
Is wsmagent.dll a Visual C++ file?
No. It is the WinRM Agent component of Windows. Installing a Visual C++ redistributable is not the evidence-based fix for this file.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. Even two Windows computers with the same apparent version can differ in build, architecture, language, and servicing state. Restore the file through Windows servicing.
Does winrm quickconfig restore a missing DLL?
No. It repairs WinRM service and listener configuration. Use DISM and SFC for a missing or corrupt system file.
Why does the error mention an application if the file belongs to Windows?
The application may be invoking WinRM. The filename identifies a dependency, not necessarily the program that owns the error.
Is a missing SysWOW64 copy always a problem?
No. Architecture matters. A 32-bit Windows installation may not have that directory, while 64-bit Windows normally uses it for 32-bit system components.
