nlslexicons004e.dll Not Found: Rebuild the Windows Component

What nlslexicons004e.dll is

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

nlslexicons004e.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component, not a general-purpose Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET library, driver, or game DLL. Its description is Microsoft Neutral Natural Language Server Data and Code, and Microsoft servicing records identify it as part of the Microsoft-Windows-NaturalLanguage6 component.

The file is documented in Windows Vista and Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1-era packages. That does not mean every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should contain the same file. The correct version depends on the Windows release, architecture, and servicing state.

Documented Windows generation Example file version Architecture evidence
Vista and Server 2008 6.0.6000.16386 32-bit and 64-bit
Windows 7 6.1.7600.16385 and later servicing builds 32-bit and 64-bit
Windows 8 6.2.9200.16384 32-bit evidence
Windows 8.1 6.3.9600.16384 Documented in public file inventories

Microsoft’s Vista and Server 2008 file manifest and servicing records provide the strongest evidence for the file’s identity. Do not use a version table as permission to copy a DLL between different Windows releases.

The safest repair is to let Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker restore the protected component.

Fix 1: Update Windows, then run DISM and SFC

This is the best first fix when Windows itself reports the error, several programs are affected, or the file is missing from the Windows system folders.

1. Install pending updates

On Windows 11:

  1. Select Start.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install all available updates.
  6. Restart when prompted.

On Windows 10:

  1. Select Start.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Update & Security.
  4. Select Windows Update.
  5. Select Check for updates.
  6. Install the updates and restart.

Test the affected program after restarting. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.

2. Open an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.

Run this command first:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

DISM checks and repairs the Windows component store. The scan can pause for a while. Wait for it to finish rather than closing the window.

When DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies using the repaired component store. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC for this reason. The official procedure is described in Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart Windows after both commands finish, then open the program again.

How to interpret the result

  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no damaged protected files. If the application still fails, identify the calling application and repair it.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means the repair succeeded. Restart before testing.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means the component store or repair source may still be damaged. Run DISM again, inspect the CBS log, and continue to the failure-handling section below.
  • DISM reports that source files could not be found means Windows Update could not provide the required repair files. Use matching Windows installation media as a repair source rather than downloading the DLL separately.

If repeatedly hunting through Windows versions and rerunning SFC or DISM is becoming difficult, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan detects; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the correct repair path for this protected component.

Fix 2: Determine whether Windows or one application is failing

The error message may appear when a particular program starts, but that does not prove the program owns the DLL.

Use these checks:

  1. Note the exact executable named in the error, if one is shown.
  2. Test another Windows program, such as File Explorer.
  3. Check whether the error appears immediately after signing in or only when one older application starts.
  4. Open Event Viewer:
  5. Press Windows + R.
  6. Type eventvwr.msc.
  7. Press Enter.
  8. Expand Windows Logs.
  9. Select Application.
  10. Look for an error at the time of the failure.
  11. Record the application path, faulting module, and event details.

If multiple applications or Windows features fail, repair Windows first. If only one old application fails and Windows otherwise works normally, repair that application in the next section.

The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. It can also mean that another dependency required during loading is missing or damaged.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application

Use this fix when one application consistently produces the error while other programs work.

Repair a supported Windows application

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps.
  5. Find the affected application.
  6. Select its three-dot menu.
  7. Select Advanced options.
  8. Select Repair, if available.
  9. Start the application again.

Microsoft documents this process in its app and program repair guidance.

For a traditional desktop program:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart Windows and test the program.

If there is no repair option, uninstall the application, restart, and reinstall it from the developer’s original installer or official download channel. Use the installer that matches the application’s architecture. Do not place a random copy of nlslexicons004e.dll beside the executable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the application has a launcher, use its Verify, Repair, or Verify files command before reinstalling everything. A legacy application may be the caller even though the missing file belongs to Windows.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate system file, but a familiar filename alone does not prove that a detected copy is safe.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Find the detection associated with the error.
  7. Expand it and inspect the original path, detection name, and action.
  8. Do not restore the file unless its origin is clearly Windows servicing or trusted installation media.
  9. Run a full scan if the detection is unclear.

Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains the available actions. If the file was found in an unexpected application folder, treat that as a security investigation rather than automatically restoring it.

Fix 5: Use a matching repair source when DISM cannot repair Windows

If DISM says that source files are missing, use genuine installation media matching the installed Windows edition, language, release, and architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft documents the repair-source format as:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a genuine matching Windows source. Do not use an unrelated Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 copy simply because the filename matches.

After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Then restart. Microsoft’s DISM image-repair documentation provides the source and servicing details.

To save the detailed SFC entries to the desktop, run:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"

Open sfcdetails.txt and look for entries mentioning nlslexicons004e.dll, NlsLexicons004e.dll, or the Natural Language component. Repeated hash mismatches can indicate that both the active file and component store copy are damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Consider restore or Windows recovery

Use System Restore when the problem began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, or software installation and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the failure.
  6. Review the affected programs.
  7. Start the restore.

System Restore is not a substitute for malware removal. Back up important files before using broader recovery options.

If DISM, SFC, a matching source, and System Restore all fail, use Microsoft’s Windows recovery options. Consider an in-place repair or reset only after backing up personal data and confirming the recovery choice.

Drivers and Windows Features are not the primary fix

nlslexicons004e.dll is not identified as a device driver. Reinstalling a display, audio, printer, or chipset driver is not a direct repair for this filename. Device Manager is relevant only if the error also identifies a separate device or driver problem:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant device category.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver or Uninstall device only when the separate hardware error supports doing so.
  6. Restart if Windows requests it.

Likewise, turning Windows Features on or off is not a general repair for this component. Do not enable random features to replace a missing protected file.

If a separate driver problem is confirmed and manually checking hardware vendors is taking time, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues; driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional and does not replace DISM, SFC, or repair of the application that produces this error.

What not to do

Do not download the DLL from a random website

A downloaded DLL may contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency is missing. It can also conceal the underlying component-store corruption.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or the original application installer instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy an x86 file onto a 64-bit system

32-bit and 64-bit files are not interchangeable. A 64-bit Windows installation may contain architecture-specific copies in servicing locations, while an older application may use a separate 32-bit loading path. Let Windows servicing select the correct file.

Do not run regsvr32 for this repair

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a missing-file repair command, and using it on this Windows data and code component is not an appropriate fix. Microsoft describes the utility’s scope in its regsvr32 documentation.

Do not reinstall unrelated runtimes first

Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, and .NET are not established owners of this filename. Repair them only when the error separately identifies a missing dependency or the application’s official support instructions require it.

Frequently asked questions

Is nlslexicons004e.dll legitimate?

Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows natural-language component associated with Microsoft-Windows-NaturalLanguage6.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should Windows 10 or Windows 11 always contain this file?

No. Public evidence documents the file mainly in older Windows generations and servicing packages. Whether a current system should contain it depends on its installed components, compatibility layers, and the application making the request.

Where should the file be?

Documented Windows versions commonly associate it with the protected Windows system infrastructure, including %WINDIR%System32. Servicing may also maintain architecture-specific copies elsewhere. Do not use a location alone to decide whether a file is authentic.

What if the file exists but the error remains?

A dependency may be missing, or the file may be corrupt. Run DISM followed by SFC, then identify the exact executable producing the error. If only one application fails, repair or reinstall that application.

What if SFC cannot repair it?

Run DISM first, retry SFC, inspect CBS.log, and use matching installation media if Windows cannot obtain repair files. Persistent failures may require System Restore or Windows recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is manual replacement ever appropriate?

Only in a controlled repair using matching original Windows media or a known-good identical installation, and only when Microsoft’s repair process identifies the exact file. It is not a normal first-line solution.
