1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsvmicres.dll is a Microsoft Windows resource DLL used by Hyper-V Integration Services. If vmicres.dll is missing, not found, corrupt, or unable to load, the safest fix is to repair the Windows guest’s integration components rather than download a replacement DLL.
What vmicres.dll does
The file is described as the Virtual Machine Integration Component Service Resource DLL. It belongs to the Hyper-V integration layer that lets a Windows guest communicate correctly with its Hyper-V host.
It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET library, game dependency, or ordinary application DLL. No particular game or commercial application is verified as its owner.
In a Windows guest, the expected path is:
%windir%System32vmicres.dll
That normally expands to:
C:WindowsSystem32vmicres.dll
The file is a resource DLL, not a hardware driver. It supports the integration-services package and should normally be restored through Windows Update, the appropriate Hyper-V integration media, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or trusted installation media.

Quick version and location check
| Check | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Normal guest path | %windir%System32vmicres.dll |
| Component | Hyper-V Integration Services |
| File type | Resource DLL |
| Typical affected system | Windows running as a Hyper-V guest |
| Package architecture | Must match the guest, such as x86 or x64 |
| Version | Depends on the Windows build and integration-services package |
Do not treat one file size or version as universal. Microsoft’s KB3071740 documentation lists version 6.3.9600.17903, with a file size of 208,384 bytes, for particular Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 integration-component packages. Older Windows builds can contain different versions.
Identify whether the error is really about Hyper-V
Before replacing anything, establish which system is reporting the error.
If Windows is a Hyper-V guest
This is the most likely scenario. The guest is the Windows installation inside the virtual machine, and vmicres.dll should be repaired inside that guest.
Check the integration-services version from an elevated Command Prompt:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →REG QUERY "HKLMSoftwareMicrosoft Virtual MachineAuto" /v IntegrationServicesVersion
If that command returns a version, the guest has an Integration Services registry entry. If it reports that the key or value cannot be found, the integration package may be missing, damaged, or handled through a newer Windows servicing model.
Also check the file directly:
if exist "%windir%System32vmicres.dll" (echo File exists) else (echo File is missing)
If Windows is the physical Hyper-V host
The host can manage integration services, but the missing file may still belong to the guest. Open the affected VM and repair Windows inside that VM. Installing a random DLL on the host will not repair a damaged guest.
On the host, open Hyper-V Manager, right-click the virtual machine, and choose Settings. Review the available integration-services settings and confirm that the services required by the VM are enabled. Microsoft warns that manually stopping or disabling guest integration services can prevent the host from starting them correctly.
If this is a physical Windows installation
A physical installation can still contain Hyper-V components, but a vmicres.dll error on a normal desktop should be investigated carefully. Check the full path and the process name. If another program is requesting a file with that name from an application folder, do not assume it is the Microsoft system copy.

Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
vmicres.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.
These are generic Windows loader templates, not evidence that a particular game or application owns the file.
Check the path and Microsoft signature
Open File Explorer and enter this path in the address bar:
%windir%System32
Look for vmicres.dll. Right-click it, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab if it is present. The signer should identify Microsoft. On the Details tab, compare the product and file information with the Windows installation and guest architecture.
A valid signature does not prove that the file is the correct build for every system, but an unsigned file in System32, an unexpected path, or a file copied from another computer is a reason to remove the replacement and use Windows servicing instead.
Fix 1: Update the Windows guest
Current Windows guests generally receive current integration components through Windows Update.
- Sign in to the affected Windows guest.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all applicable updates, including optional quality or servicing updates when appropriate.
- Restart the guest.
- Test the Hyper-V operation or application that produced the error.
If Windows Update reports that a restart is required, restart before testing. Integration components can be updated as part of normal Windows servicing, so a pending reboot can leave the old or incomplete component state in place.
If updates fail, record the Windows Update error code and continue with the component repair steps below.
Fix 2: Install Integration Services on an older Hyper-V host
Older Windows guests and older Hyper-V hosts may require the Integration Services setup disk.
On the Hyper-V host:
- Open Hyper-V Manager.
- Connect to the affected virtual machine.
- In the Virtual Machine Connection window, select Action.
- Choose Insert Integration Services Setup Disk.
- Inside the guest, open the inserted disc if it does not launch automatically.
- Run the installer.
- Accept the prompts and restart the guest.
The package must match the guest’s Windows generation and architecture. Microsoft documents package names including:

Some historical Download Center links referenced by that article are no longer available. Do not replace them with a DLL mirror. For an obsolete guest, use matching installation media, a trusted VM backup, offline servicing, or an in-place repair.

Fix 3: Repair the Windows component store and protected files
An interrupted update, hard shutdown, storage problem, or failed servicing operation can damage the component store or protected system files.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source. SFC checks protected system files and may restore vmicres.dll if the correct copy is available.
If DISM says that source files could not be found, use matching Windows installation media with an appropriate /Source configuration rather than copying the DLL manually. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, review:

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork of repeatedly running SFC and DISM by showing what it identifies during its free scan; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required when Microsoft’s built-in servicing tools work.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a damaged or falsely detected system file.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and select Windows Security.
- Choose Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open an item that references
vmicres.dll. - Confirm the original path was
%windir%System32vmicres.dll. - Check the detection details and scan result.
- Restore it only if the path, Microsoft signature, and security assessment support that decision.
- Run a full scan afterward.
Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined threat can cause Defender to detect it again. Do not create a broad exclusion for System32 or for all DLL files. If the file repeatedly disappears, run a full malware scan and investigate whether storage errors are corrupting or deleting files.
Fix 5: Repair or restore the VM after a migration
A VM moved between Hyper-V host generations can have an integration-services mismatch. This is especially relevant with older Windows guests.

Check:
- The Windows edition and build inside the guest.
- Whether the guest is x86 or x64.
- The Hyper-V host version.
- Whether the VM was recently exported, imported, copied, or restored.
- Whether an integration-services installation was interrupted.
- Whether Hyper-V integration services are enabled for the VM.
Use Windows Update for supported guests. For older guests, insert the matching Integration Services setup disk. Do not install an x86 package in an x64 guest or use files from a different Windows build.
If the VM still boots but management features fail, inspect Event Viewer inside the guest and on the host. Review Windows Logs > System, Hyper-V worker events, and integration-service-related events. Record the process name and complete path shown by the error.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the problem began after an update, cleanup utility, driver change, or failed installation, System Restore may reverse the change without removing personal files.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Restart Windows and test the VM again.
System Restore is most useful when a suitable restore point exists and the failure has a clear recent starting point.
Do drivers or Windows Features matter?
vmicres.dll is not a hardware driver, so reinstalling graphics, chipset, or storage drivers is not a first-line repair. If the VM has broader stability problems, however, inspect driver and virtualization configuration.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as System devices, Network adapters, and Storage controllers.
- Look for warning icons.
- Right-click a relevant device and choose Properties.
- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver only when you have a compatible source or Windows identifies a suitable update.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which of many installed drivers it considers stale during its free scan; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is optional because Hyper-V and Windows Update remain the authoritative repair path.
On a physical Hyper-V host, Turn Windows features on or off can confirm whether Hyper-V is installed:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review Hyper-V, including Hyper-V Platform and Hyper-V Management Tools.
- Apply changes and restart if Windows requests it.
Enabling Hyper-V on the host does not replace a missing integration file inside an older guest.

What not to do
Do not download vmicres.dll from a DLL website
A downloaded DLL can contain malware, the wrong architecture, the wrong Windows build, or modified resources. It may also make the error worse by creating a version mismatch.
Do not copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not place it in a game or application folder unless the application’s verified vendor documentation specifically requires a private copy. Repair the owning Windows component instead.

Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair command
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose the required registration entry points. A resource DLL such as vmicres.dll is not automatically repaired by running:
regsvr32 vmicres.dll
That command can produce an error without fixing the missing integration component. Use Windows Update, Integration Services installation, DISM, SFC, or System Restore.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are not established fixes for this Hyper-V resource DLL. Install them only if a separate, clearly named application dependency requires them.
FAQ
Is vmicres.dll safe?
A correctly located, Microsoft-signed copy in %windir%System32 is consistent with its Hyper-V Integration Services role. Verify the path and signature rather than trusting the filename alone.
Is vmicres.dll on the Hyper-V host or guest?
The relevant copy is normally inside the Windows guest. The host manages the VM and supplies or coordinates integration services, but repairing the host alone may not repair the guest’s Windows files.
Does every Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC have this file?
No universal claim should be made. Its presence depends on the Windows installation, Hyper-V role, guest configuration, and integration-services implementation.
Recommended Free Tools
Does a missing file always mean malware?
No. Damaged servicing, failed integration installation, quarantine, migration problems, and storage faults can all cause the error. Malware should still be considered if the file repeatedly disappears or fails signature checks.
What if the error names a different folder?
Treat that as a separate clue. Record the full path and process name. A program requesting vmicres.dll from its own directory may not be using the Windows Integration Services copy.
What should I collect before escalating?
Record the full error text, complete file path, process name, Windows edition and build, guest architecture, Hyper-V host version, recent VM changes, the Integration Services registry output, DISM and SFC results, and relevant entries from CBS.log and Event Viewer.
