Before you start

Fix 1: Identify and remove the affected Canon printer package
Time needed: 10–15 minutes
Start with the Canon driver because it is the most likely source of the error.
Check installed applications
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Apps, then Installed apps.
In Windows 10, select Apps. - Search for Canon or MP Drivers.
- Look for entries resembling:
- Canon printer driver
- Canon [printer model] Driver
- Canon [printer model] Printer Driver
- Canon MP Drivers
- Canon IJ printer software
- Select the relevant entry.
- Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows using Start → Power → Restart.
Do not skip the restart. It allows Windows to release driver files and clears part of the old printer installation.
Remove the old printer entry
After restarting:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners in Windows 11.
In Windows 10, select Devices → Printers & scanners. - Select the old Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
If the printer does not appear there, continue to the next step.
Remove an orphaned driver package
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
printui.exe /s /t2
- Press Enter.
- In the Print Server Properties window, open the Drivers tab.
- Select the Canon driver associated with the affected printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that choice.
- Restart Windows again.
If Windows refuses to remove the package because it is in use, stop any printing activity, disconnect the printer temporarily, restart, and try again.

Fix 2: Install the correct Canon driver
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Download the driver from Canon’s official support site, using the exact printer model. Search Canon Support by model, then select your Windows version and system architecture.
Choose the current printer driver or MP Drivers package supplied for that model. Avoid selecting a package merely because its name contains a similar printer series.

- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if it is connected.
- Close printer utilities and other programs.
- Run the Canon installer.
- Allow administrator permission if Windows requests it.
- Follow the setup instructions.
- Connect the printer only when the installer asks.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Return to Settings → Printers & scanners.
- Confirm that the Canon printer is listed.
- Print a test page from the printer’s settings.
If the test page prints and the original program opens without the DLL error, the repair worked.
Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 64-bit edition of Windows can use some older 32-bit software, but the printer driver still must match the model and the supported Windows environment. A file copied from a different package can produce errors such as:
- “not designed to run on Windows”
- “could not be loaded”
- “entry point not found”
- “bad image”
Do not replace a 64-bit driver component with a similarly named 32-bit DLL, or the reverse. Let Canon’s installer place the correct files in the driver package and Windows driver store.
You can check your Windows architecture at Settings → System → About → System type. Use the architecture and Windows version shown on Canon’s model-specific download page.
Manually updating several drivers means identifying the exact model, finding the correct package, removing obsolete packages, and repeating the process when Windows restores an old one. Fix 3: Check Windows Update and retry the installation

- Run the correct Canon installer again.
If the Canon installer fails, temporarily disconnect the printer, remove the old Canon package using the steps above, restart, and retry the installation with the printer disconnected. Reconnect it when the installer requests it.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may quarantine a damaged or incorrectly identified printer component.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
cnb_0290.dll, a Canon installer, or a printer driver. - Note the detected file path and detection name.
Do not restore the file automatically. Restore it only when all of the following are true:
- The file came from a Canon driver installation.
- Its location is inside a legitimate printer-driver directory or Windows driver store.
- The Canon package was obtained from Canon.
- The security product clearly identifies the detection as a false positive.
If the file appeared in a user-writable temporary folder, an unrelated application directory, or a random download folder, leave it quarantined and run a full security scan. A DLL with a Canon-like name is not automatically genuine.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
cnb_0290.dll is not necessarily a protected Windows system file, so SFC may not restore it. Use these commands when several Windows components are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or the Canon installer itself fails because Windows is corrupted.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Canon driver installation.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected system files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling a Canon printer package.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing whether the Windows component store or printer package is damaged can make troubleshooting unclear. Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair
Time needed: 2 minutes
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 cnb_0290.dll
regsvr32 works with DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A printer-driver DLL is normally installed through its driver package and INF instructions, not repaired by registering it manually.

A failed regsvr32 command can produce messages such as “the module was loaded but the entry point was not found.” That does not mean the DLL is missing again. It usually means registration is not the correct operation for that file.
Install the Canon package through its official installer instead.
Fix 7: Handle an unsupported older printer
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Some older Canon printers no longer have a current driver for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Search Canon Support for the exact model.
- Check whether a driver is offered for your Windows version.
- If Canon provides a legacy driver, install that package using the removal and restart procedure above.
- If Canon provides no compatible driver, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Choose Add device.
- Allow Windows to search for an available compatible or inbox printer driver.
If Windows cannot provide a usable driver and Canon has no compatible package, the printer may not be supported on the current system. Use a compatible driver only if printing works correctly. Do not download an isolated cnb_0290.dll from a DLL website.
If the error still appears after reinstalling
Check where Windows is looking for the file.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
eventvwr.msc
- Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an error at the time the message appeared.
- Note the calling program and file path.
You can also search for the file in File Explorer, but location alone is not proof of legitimacy. System32 is not automatically proof that a file is a Windows core component, and printer packages can be staged under the Windows driver store. SysWOW64 and System32 also have counterintuitive names on 64-bit Windows.
A genuine copy should come from the Canon driver package and have consistent publisher information where Windows exposes it. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect Digital Signatures and Details. Conflicting metadata, an unexpected location, or a file that returns to antivirus quarantine requires further investigation.

If the failure began immediately after a known driver update and no clean Canon installer works, System Restore can be considered as a last resort. Create or use a restore point only if you understand which recent changes will be reversed.
