hpfppw73.dll Errors: Identify the Driver Before Repair

You may see “The program can’t start because hpfppw73.dll is missing from your computer,” “The code execution cannot proceed because hpfppw73.dll was not found,” or “Error loading hpfppw73.dll. The specified module could not be found.” The hpfppw73.dll error usually means that an older HP printer driver is incomplete, damaged, removed, or no longer correctly registered with the Windows Print Spooler.

The 60-second answer

hpfppw73.dll is an HP print-processor DLL, not a general Windows runtime such as .NET, DirectX, or Visual C++. The Print Spooler loads it when an installed HP printer driver needs to convert queued print data before sending it to the printer.

The safest repair is:

  1. Remove the affected printer from Settings.
  2. Download the exact driver for the printer model from HP’s official support site.
  3. Install the driver and add the printer again.
  4. Print a test page.

Do not download hpfppw73.dll by itself or copy it into System32. The correct file must arrive with the correct printer-driver package.

What hpfppw73.dll does

A print processor is a user-mode component used by Windows printing. It processes spool files into a format that the printer driver and print monitor can send to the device.

Although the file may be located inside the Windows directory, it is not an ordinary Windows component. It belongs to the HP printer software that installed it. Common architecture-specific locations are:

C:WindowsSystem32spoolprtprocsx64hpfppw73.dll
C:WindowsSystem32spoolprtprocsW32X86hpfppw73.dll

The x64 folder is for 64-bit print processors. W32X86 is the normal location for 32-bit print processors. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit Windows system files. Do not use SysWOW64 as a substitute for the W32X86 print-processor directory.

Public file inventories report a 32-bit version 0.3.7071.0, with other reported copies differing by architecture and size. These historical inventory details do not identify every HP printer that may have installed the file, and a newer HP driver may use a different print architecture.

Why the error appears

The message can appear while:

  • Printing a document or test page
  • Opening printer properties
  • Starting or restarting the Print Spooler
  • Installing or removing an old HP printer
  • Adding a shared or network printer
  • Updating Windows or an HP driver
  • Recovering files from a backup
  • Cleaning up the disk
  • Antivirus software quarantining a printer component

The most likely causes are:

  1. A damaged, incomplete, or removed HP driver package
  2. A 32-bit and 64-bit driver mismatch
  3. An obsolete driver that conflicts with the current Print Spooler
  4. Antivirus quarantine
  5. A missing dependency beside the DLL
  6. Broader Windows component corruption

If the message says “The specified module could not be found” even though hpfppw73.dll exists, another dependency may be missing. Replacing only this file will not repair that dependency chain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the HP printer driver

This is the most reliable fix because it restores the print processor, its dependencies, and the associated driver registration together.

Remove the printer

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Select Printers & scanners.
  4. Select the affected HP printer.
  5. Select Remove and confirm.
  6. Restart Windows.

If several old HP queues use the same driver, remove those queues as well. An obsolete queue can continue loading a damaged print processor even after the main printer has been removed.

Remove the old driver if the error returns

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:

text
printui.exe /s /t2

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select the Drivers tab.
  3. Select the old HP driver.
  4. Choose Remove.
  5. Select Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that choice.
  6. Restart the computer.

If Windows says the driver is in use, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners and remove every printer using that driver. You may also need to stop the Print Spooler first:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Right-click Print Spooler and select Stop.
  5. Remove the driver through Print server properties.
  6. Return to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and select Start.

Install the correct package

Use HP’s official printer-driver support page, select the exact printer model, and choose the Windows version and architecture offered for that device. If HP does not provide a suitable package, use Windows’ printer installation path and select Windows Update or Have Disk when manually installing a supplied driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

During installation:

  1. Run the HP installer.
  2. Allow it to make changes if Windows asks.
  3. Connect the printer when the installer requests it.
  4. Re-add the printer if the installer does not do so automatically.
  5. Open the printer’s Printer properties.
  6. Select Print Test Page.

The repair worked if the test page prints and opening Printing preferences no longer produces the DLL error. If the newest HP package does not restore hpfppw73.dll, that may be intentional. Newer drivers can use a different print architecture. In that case, keep the newer working driver rather than forcing this legacy file into the spooler.

When manually searching through multiple printer models and driver packages, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated or mismatched drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. The exact HP printer package remains the definitive repair for this file.

Fix 2: Check the Print Spooler

If printing or printer properties crash immediately, isolate the spooler from the damaged queue.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find Print Spooler.
  5. Right-click it and select Restart.
  6. Try printing again.

If the service stops again:

  1. Stop Print Spooler.
  2. Remove third-party printer queues from Printers & scanners.
  3. Open this folder:

text
C:WindowsSystem32spoolPRINTERS

  1. Delete the files inside it, but not the folder itself.
  2. Start Print Spooler.
  3. Add only the required printer.

Do not delete files from the prtprocs folders as a first step. Those files belong to installed driver packages, and manual deletion can leave the driver registration in a worse state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the spooler remains stable after removing old queues, add printers back one at a time. The queue that causes the crash identifies the driver family that needs replacement.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may remove or quarantine a printer component after a scan.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving hpfppw73.dll, an HP printer package, or the Print Spooler.
  5. Review the file path and detection details.

Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the missing DLL. Restore it only when the path, origin, digital signature, and related HP installation are trusted. Otherwise, reinstall the complete driver from HP. Do not disable antivirus protection to force a manually downloaded DLL into the spooler.

After reinstalling, run another security scan. If the file is quarantined again, leave it quarantined and investigate the installed package rather than repeatedly restoring it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use these commands when Windows itself may be damaged, especially if several built-in services or system files are failing. They are less likely to restore an HP-owned driver file that was removed from the driver package.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:

cmd
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:

cmd
sfc /scannow

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the printer again.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks and repairs protected Windows system files. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations but the printer still reports hpfppw73.dll, return to the HP driver reinstall rather than repeating SFC.

Manually comparing DISM and SFC results can be confusing when you are also tracking printer packages and spooler changes. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the HP package when that package is missing.

Fix 5: Check the file path and architecture

If the file exists, do not assume it is correct.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Check:

text
C:WindowsSystem32spoolprtprocsx64

and, when applicable:

text
C:WindowsSystem32spoolprtprocsW32X86

  1. Right-click hpfppw73.dll.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Review General, Details, and Digital Signatures, if present.
  4. Compare the path with the printer installation you trust.

A 32-bit print processor cannot replace the x64 version required by a 64-bit driver environment. A file in a temporary folder, a user profile, or an unrelated application directory should not be copied into the spooler folders. Reinstall the driver instead.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

regsvr32 is appropriate for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A print processor is normally installed and associated with a printer driver by the driver installer.

Running commands such as these is therefore not a routine repair:

regsvr32 hpfppw73.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32spoolprtprocsx64hpfppw73.dll

They may produce an entry-point error, a permissions error, or no useful change. Use the HP installer or Windows printer-driver installation process instead.

If the printer is obsolete

If you no longer use the HP printer, remove the printer queue and its old driver rather than restoring the DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a supported modern printer, try a Windows inbox driver or an IPP driver:

  1. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
  2. Select Add device.
  3. Let Windows search for the printer.
  4. If available, choose the Windows-provided driver.
  5. Print a test page.

This can avoid carrying an old print processor into a current Windows installation.

If the error still remains

Open Event Viewer:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type eventvwr.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Open Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → PrintService.
  5. Review recent errors at the time of the crash or failed print.

Record the printer queue, driver name, and whether the spooler stopped. If the problem began immediately after an update or driver change, reinstall the printer driver first. Use System Restore only when the timing clearly points to a recent installation or update, because it can revert programs, drivers, and settings.

FAQ

Is hpfppw73.dll a Windows system file?

No. It may be stored beneath the Windows spooler directory, but it is associated with an HP printer-driver package and is loaded by the Print Spooler when required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I download the DLL by itself?

That is unsafe and often ineffective. A random copy may contain malware, the wrong architecture, the wrong version, or missing dependencies. Restore the complete driver from HP or use a suitable Windows printer driver.

Why does the file appear in both x64 and W32X86 folders?

Windows supports print drivers for different architectures. The x64 directory serves 64-bit print processors, while W32X86 is used for 32-bit print processors.

Does Device Manager repair this file?

Usually not. Device Manager can update or remove printer devices, but the relevant print processor is managed through the printer-driver and spooler installation. Use the printer removal and driver reinstall steps first.

Could malware be responsible?

The error alone does not prove malware, Windows corruption, or a runtime failure. Check the file’s path, signature, quarantine history, and printer-driver origin. Reinstalling the trusted driver is safer than restoring an unexplained copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the newest HP driver no longer contains this DLL?

Keep the newer driver if printing works. A current package may use a different print architecture and may not need this legacy print processor.
