The navemail.dll error usually points to a damaged or partly removed legacy Norton AntiVirus installation. It is not a Windows component, and downloading a replacement DLL into System32 is not the correct fix.
You may see messages such as:
- “NAVEMAIL.dll was not found.”
- “The file NAVEMAIL.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading NAVEMAIL.dll.”
- “A required component is missing: NAVEMAIL.dll.”
- “This application failed to start because NAVEMAIL.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because NAVEMAIL.dll is missing from your computer.”
Some of these are generic Windows loader messages reported by third-party file catalogs, not confirmed Norton diagnostics. A historical Norton installation report specifically associated the file with Symantec Email Proxy and expected it at:
C:Program FilesNorton antivirusNavEmail.dll
Which fix applies to you
Use this quick decision path before changing anything:
- Norton is still installed: repair or reinstall the exact Norton installation. Start with its original installer or maintenance option.
- You recently removed Norton: remove the leftover startup service, scheduled task, or email-proxy entry by completing Norton’s uninstall process and restarting.
- Windows Security or Norton quarantined the file: inspect quarantine history. Restore it only if the file came from a verified Norton installation.
- You installed a current Norton product but the error remains: the current installer may not contain this obsolete legacy file. Remove the stale legacy reference or locate the original Norton installer.
- The error appears when opening Outlook or another old mail client: the remaining component may be Norton’s old email proxy.
- The file exists in a random folder or outside Norton’s installation directory: do not whitelist it automatically. Scan the system and verify its publisher and location.
- Windows itself is reporting broader file corruption: run DISM, then SFC, as secondary repairs. These commands do not recreate a missing Norton DLL.
What navemail.dll belongs to
Public file records identify NAVEMAIL.DLL as a 32-bit Norton AntiVirus email component associated with legacy Symantec software. Norton AntiVirus historically supported email scanning for POP3 and SMTP clients, although Norton’s product documentation does not identify this DLL by name.

That makes the architecture important. The known cataloged file is 32-bit because the Norton product that used it was a 32-bit-era application. A 64-bit replacement with the same filename is not an appropriate substitute.
navemail.dll is not:
- A Windows system DLL
- A normal
System32orSysWOW64file - A DirectX component
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A .NET component
- A file that should normally be registered with
regsvr32
The exact historical build and size are inconsistent across public catalogs, so do not use a version number or file size alone to decide whether a downloaded copy is authentic.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Norton product that requested the file
This is the most likely solution because a missing DLL usually means the owning application is incomplete. Norton’s email-scanning component depended on more than one file, service, registry entry, and configuration entry. Replacing one DLL does not rebuild those dependencies.
If you still have the original Norton installer
- Close Outlook, your mail client, and other open applications.
- Locate the original Norton or Symantec installer.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair, Modify, or Reinstall, depending on the installer.
- Allow the installation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the application that previously produced the error.
The repair worked if the startup message disappears and Norton’s services or email-protection settings open normally. If the installer refuses to run, reports that the product is unsupported, or does not contain the old email component, do not mix files from another Norton release. Continue with a complete removal and reinstall.
If you use a current Norton product
Use Norton’s official Norton 360 Remover or Norton Remove and Reinstall utility. The tool can remove damaged current Norton device-security software and reinstall it, but it may not restore the obsolete Norton AntiVirus release that originally supplied navemail.dll.
The normal sequence is:
- Download the remover from Norton’s official support site.
- Run the downloaded tool as administrator.
- Select Remove & Reinstall or Reinstall, depending on the version shown.
- Accept the license terms.
- Follow the prompts to remove Norton.
- Restart when requested.
- Sign in to your Norton account if prompted.
- Complete the reinstall.
- Restart again if the installer requests it.
If Norton reinstalls successfully but the same legacy navemail.dll error appears, the startup reference probably belongs to an older Norton installation that was not fully removed. Follow Fix 2.
Fix 2: Remove a stale Norton startup reference
If Norton is no longer wanted, the safest solution is to remove Norton completely rather than restore its old email scanner.

First try the normal Windows uninstall path:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Norton and any remaining Symantec entries.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the product.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
You can also press Windows + R, enter:
appwiz.cpl
and press Enter. Select the Norton or Symantec product in Programs and Features, then choose Uninstall.

To inspect startup references:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Norton, Symantec, Email Proxy, or an entry pointing to an old Norton folder.
- Right-click a clearly identified obsolete entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
For scheduled tasks:
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks with Norton or Symantec in their names.
- Open a task’s Actions tab and inspect the executable path.
- Disable or remove a task only when its path clearly points to an uninstalled Norton directory.
Do not delete unrelated tasks merely because they mention email or security. If you are unsure, leave the task in place and use Norton’s remover or Microsoft support guidance.
The fix worked when Windows starts without the navemail.dll message and no remaining Norton process points to a deleted installation directory.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
A security product may have quarantined the file, or a damaged installation may have triggered a detection. The filename alone cannot prove whether a copy is safe.

- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand recent detections.
- Look for a Norton installation file,
navemail.dll, or a related executable. - Check the detection path and reason.
- Restore or allow the file only when its path and provenance match a legitimate Norton installation.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can expose the device if the detection was correct. If the file was found in a download folder, temporary directory, crack, unofficial installer, or random application folder, do not restore it merely to suppress the error.
If Norton itself has a quarantine history, open Norton and review its security history using the same standard. A verified restore is still not a substitute for repairing the full Norton installation.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Because navemail.dll is a third-party Norton file, DISM and SFC will not recreate it. They are useful when the DLL error appeared alongside broader Windows corruption, failed updates, damaged system files, or unusual application-loading errors.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses, while SFC checks protected Windows files.

Fix 5: Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
Avoid DLL aggregation sites and unofficial file mirrors. A replacement can have:
- The wrong Norton release
- The wrong architecture
- Missing dependencies
- A damaged or modified binary
- A malicious payload
- A filename that matches but does not belong to your installation
Copying a 32-bit application DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can also create search-path and compatibility problems. Windows searches application directories according to defined DLL-loading rules, and placing a file in a system directory can make troubleshooting harder and create security risks.

The safe sources are the original verified Norton installer, Norton’s official recovery or removal tools, and a legitimate restore from a known-good Norton installation. Do not substitute a similarly named DLL from another Norton release.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE and ActiveX DLLs that expose the required registration entry point. It is not a universal command for loading every DLL.

Do not start with:
regsvr32 navemail.dll
A normal application library may not support registration at all. Running the command can produce another error without repairing Norton’s services, email proxy, registry entries, or dependencies.
Only use regsvr32 when the software vendor’s documentation specifically instructs you to register that exact DLL and provides the correct architecture and path. There is no verified evidence that navemail.dll should normally be registered this way.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the symptoms point to hardware
A navemail.dll startup error is not normally a graphics, chipset, audio, or storage-driver problem. Device Manager will not restore a missing Norton module.
Use Device Manager only if the same incident includes hardware errors:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click a device with a warning icon.
- Select Properties and read the Device status message.
- Use the hardware vendor’s official driver package.
- Restart Windows.
Do not install unrelated drivers just because the DLL error is difficult to diagnose.

Fix 8: Use System Restore as a last recovery step
If the error began immediately after software installation, an update, or an incomplete removal, System Restore may revert affected registry settings, installed programs, drivers, and system files.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error appeared.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Continue only if the restore point is appropriate.
- Restart and test Windows.
System Restore will not guarantee recovery of an obsolete Norton installer or prove that navemail.dll was legitimate. Back up important work first and use it only when the timing clearly matches a recent software change.

If the error remains after reinstalling Norton
Check the exact executable path in the error message. A current Norton installation may be healthy while an old shortcut, service, scheduled task, or mail-client integration still points to a deleted directory.
Also inspect:
- Event Viewer: search Windows Logs for errors at the same time as the startup failure.
- Task Manager: review Startup apps for old Norton or Symantec entries.
- Task Scheduler: inspect actions that reference an old Norton folder.
- Services: look for clearly identified Norton or Symantec services whose executable path no longer exists.
- Protection History: confirm whether security software removed the file.
- Mail-client add-ins: disable obsolete Norton email-scanning integrations if Norton is no longer installed.
If the file exists but Windows says it is damaged, verify its full path and digital signature. A copy outside the legitimate Norton installation directory should be treated as suspicious until proven otherwise.

Is navemail.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with legacy Symantec/Norton AntiVirus email scanning and should not normally be present in Windows system directories.
Is navemail.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public catalogs consistently identify the known file as 32-bit. No trustworthy 64-bit variant has been established.
Can I download navemail.dll?
Do not download it from a DLL download sites site. The wrong version, architecture, or modified file can worsen the problem and will not restore Norton’s related services and configuration.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no verified evidence that these runtimes are the correct remedy for navemail.dll. Repair or reinstall the Norton product first.

What if I no longer use Norton?

Is every navemail.dll file malicious?
