Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, record:
- The exact program showing the error
- The complete message, such as “cngcredui.dll was not found” or “The specified module could not be found”
- Whether the error appears during Windows sign-in or only when opening one application
- Whether it started after Windows Update, an application installation, cleanup software, antivirus activity, or a system crash
- Whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether
cngcredui.dllexists inC:WindowsSystem32
cngcredui.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with the CNG Credential User Interface provider. It is not a standalone game file or a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET component. The safest repair is to restore Windows through Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What cngcredui.dll does
Windows uses credential-provider components when it displays sign-in prompts, credential dialogs, and other authentication interfaces. cngcredui.dll belongs to that Windows subsystem.
It is normally found at:
C:WindowsSystem32cngcredui.dll
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit applications use the WOW64 system-file mechanism. This means a 32-bit application may interact with the 32-bit system-file view commonly associated with:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not treat System32 and SysWOW64 as simple “32-bit” and “64-bit” folder names. Windows redirects access depending on the application architecture. Copying a file into either folder manually can therefore make the problem worse.

The component is associated with Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows 8.1, and corresponding Windows Server releases, but the correct file depends on the installed Windows build, architecture, language, and servicing state. Older public file listings may show historical versions, but they are not a complete or current version list.
Messages this problem can produce
Common loader messages include:
- “This application failed to start because cngcredui.dll was not found.”
- “The file cngcredui.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: cngcredui.dll.”
- “Error loading cngcredui.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because cngcredui.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “cngcredui.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not prove that the DLL itself is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can also indicate a missing dependency, an architecture mismatch, corruption, or an application loader problem.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
An interrupted or incomplete update can leave a protected Windows component missing or inconsistent.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Open the affected application again.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows.
If Windows Update reports an error, resolve that problem first using Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance. Then restart and test the application again.

If the error remains, continue with the component repair commands below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Run DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source for protected files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- When it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If the original error disappears, no DLL download or registration is needed.
If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart Windows and run DISM again, followed by SFC. For a component store that needs a separate source, Microsoft documents this pattern:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Do not use that example path literally unless you have a valid repair source there. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and build. An unrelated ISO or copied folder can produce another servicing problem.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its repair functions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the supported first-line repair for this Windows component.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
If the error appeared immediately after a security scan, inspect quarantine history before changing anything.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Inspect recent detections.
- Check the detected file path, publisher, detection name, and signature information.
Restore or allow a quarantined file only when you have verified that it is the genuine Microsoft file in the expected Windows system location. Allowing a real threat can compromise the computer. If the detection is uncertain, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.
After a repair, run a full Microsoft Defender scan. If Defender repeatedly removes the file, investigate the detection rather than repeatedly restoring it.
Fix 4: Repair the affected application
If Windows starts normally and only one game or program reports the error, the application may have a broken installation, an incompatible loader, or another missing dependency.
Use the program’s built-in repair process first:
- In a game launcher, select the game and use Verify files, Scan and repair, or the equivalent option.
- In an installer-based application, open Apps in Windows Settings and look for Repair or Modify.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the application menu, choose Advanced options, and select Repair when available.
- If repair does not work, uninstall the application and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer or launcher.
Restart Windows after reinstalling and test the program before adding unofficial DLL files.
Do not automatically install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET because the message names cngcredui.dll. Those packages are not established as the source of this Windows component. Install an additional runtime only when the application’s official documentation specifically requires it.

You can inspect the expected Windows location without replacing anything.
- Press Windows key + E.
- Enter
%SystemRoot%System32in the address bar. - Look for
cngcredui.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
The file path, signature, and Windows build matter together. A file with a Microsoft-looking name in a game folder, Downloads folder, temporary folder, or another unexpected location should not be copied into a system directory.
You can also check the file from an elevated PowerShell window:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32cngcredui.dll"
A valid signature does not by itself prove that the file is the correct build for your installation, so Windows servicing remains safer than manual replacement.
Why 32-bit and 64-bit entries can differ
A 64-bit Windows installation supports both 64-bit and 32-bit applications. Those applications can use different system-file views through WOW64 redirection.
This explains why a report may show:
- A 64-bit entry for a newer Windows build
- A 32-bit entry for an older or separate system-file view
- Different version information from different diagnostic programs
Do not download a “matching” 32-bit or 64-bit DLL based only on the error message. The correct architecture is determined by the application and Windows installation, while the correct build is supplied through Windows servicing.

Do not use regsvr32 for this problem
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general repair command for every DLL.
cngcredui.dll is a Windows system component, not a DLL that should routinely be registered by the user. Running commands such as these is therefore not an appropriate first-line fix:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →regsvr32 cngcredui.dll
regsvr32 /u cngcredui.dll
They do not restore a missing file, repair the component store, or fix a missing dependency. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.
Do not download or copy the DLL manually
Avoid third-party DLL download archives and random forum attachments. A manually downloaded file can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to another Windows build, lack a valid Microsoft signature, or leave the underlying component-store problem unresolved.
Do not copy cngcredui.dll from another computer unless you are performing a controlled repair with identical Windows edition, architecture, language, and build. Even then, Windows servicing is the preferred method.
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, and an application’s official installer when the error is limited to that application.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When drivers are relevant
A driver update is not the normal fix for a missing Windows credential-provider DLL. Consider drivers only when the problem began with broader Windows instability, failed hardware detection, display crashes, storage errors, or a recent system change.
Use the manufacturer’s official support page or Windows Update first. In Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the suspected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Review the driver provider and date.
- Use Update Driver or uninstall the problematic device and restart if appropriate.
Do not uninstall an unknown device or storage controller without a recovery plan. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; driver installation through its full version is optional, and it is not a substitute for repairing Windows with DISM and SFC.

- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without removing personal documents.
Reinstall Windows while preserving files
On supported Windows 11 versions, open:
Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the feature is available. Follow the on-screen instructions and keep the computer connected to power.
Consider a clean installation only last
A clean installation is justified when DISM, SFC, Windows Update, System Restore, and a repair reinstall fail, or when there is evidence of serious malware, failing storage, or extensive system corruption. Back up personal files first and use official Windows installation media.

If the error remains after these steps, investigate the exact application loader, storage health, malware, and the Windows user profile. The DLL name alone does not establish a specific profile defect.
FAQ
Is cngcredui.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a Windows system DLL associated with the Microsoft CNG CredUI provider and credential-user-interface functions.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not automatically. This file is part of Windows, not a general Visual C++ runtime. Repair the Windows component first.
Can I fix it by registering the DLL?
Usually no. regsvr32 is not a repair tool for a missing or corrupted Windows system component.
Why does only one game or application show the error?
The application may have a damaged installation or may be loading a dependency incorrectly. Verify or repair that application after checking Windows.
Is the file supposed to be in System32 or SysWOW64?
Windows normally maintains architecture-specific system-file views. Use the Windows-managed copy and do not manually move files between those folders.
What if the file is absent after DISM and SFC?
Check SFC’s result, restart, run DISM followed by SFC again, and then consider System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall. Do not download a replacement DLL from an unofficial source.
