idasci32.dll Is Missing: Repair the Legacy App on Windows

idasci32.dll is a 32-bit ASCII/text database driver from the Borland Database Engine (BDE), usually installed with an old Delphi, C++Builder, Paradox, dBASE, or business application. It is not a Windows system file, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file.

The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the application that originally installed BDE. A standalone copy of idasci32.dll often leaves the BDE engine, configuration, registry settings, language files, or other drivers missing.

What you are checking Correct identification

Usual companion idapi32.dll, the main BDE engine

Why Windows reports idasci32.dll errors

You may see messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because idasci32.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “This application has failed to start because idasci32.dll was not found.”
  • “Unable to load IDASCI32.DLL.”
  • “An error occurred while attempting to initialize the Borland Database Engine.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because idasci32.dll was not found.”

The exact wording depends on the application and Windows version. The underlying problem can be more than an absent file. Common causes include:

  1. The legacy application or BDE was never installed.
  2. A cleanup utility or partial uninstall removed part of BDE.
  3. Antivirus software quarantined the file.
  4. The application is using the wrong BDE directory.
  5. idapi32.dll, a language file, configuration file, or another driver is missing.
  6. The file exists but is damaged, blocked, incompatible, or unable to load a dependency.
  7. The application is old and is not fully compatible with the current Windows installation.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application

This is the most likely solution because BDE is installed as part of an application, not through Windows Update.

Before uninstalling anything, back up the application’s data. Look for files such as .DB, .DBF, .PX, .MDX, .VAL, .XG*, .YG*, CSV files, and application-specific database files. Copy them to a separate folder or external drive.

Then repair the program:

  1. Press Windows, type Installed apps, and open it.
  2. Find the application that fails to start.
  3. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  4. Choose Advanced options if available.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Start the application and check whether its database opens.

If there is no Repair option:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Select the affected application.
  4. Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
  5. Install the database engine or BDE prerequisite if the installer offers that choice.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Start the application again.

If repair is unavailable, uninstall and reinstall the same application version from its original installer, verified company deployment media, or the software publisher’s official support source. Do not remove your database files during the process.

A successful repair normally restores more than idasci32.dll. It should also restore idapi32.dll, database drivers, configuration files, language files, aliases, and the registry settings the application expects.

Fix 2: Check which application owns the file

The filename alone cannot identify the exact product. Several unrelated legacy programs used BDE.

Find the affected program from the error context:

  1. Note the application name shown in the error window.
  2. Right-click its shortcut and choose Properties.
  3. Check the Target field for the program’s installation directory.
  4. Open that directory in File Explorer.
  5. Look for a local BDE folder, idapi32.dll, or a configuration utility.
  6. Check Installed apps and the Start menu for database, laboratory, accounting, engineering, or archival software installed around the same time.
  7. Ask the application’s vendor which BDE package and configuration it requires.

Typical BDE locations include:

C:Program FilesCommon FilesBorland SharedBDE
C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesBorland SharedBDE

An application-local BDE directory is also possible. Do not assume that the first copy found on the computer is the one the program uses. Multiple BDE installations can point to different configuration files and cause conflicts.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove or quarantine an old DLL, particularly after a Windows reinstall, application restore, or antivirus update.

To check Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent actions involving idasci32.dll or the affected application.
  5. Confirm the original file path.
  6. Verify with the application vendor that the file belongs to the installed product.
  7. Restore it only if its source and path are trusted.
  8. Repair or reinstall the complete application afterward.

Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion just to suppress the error. If the file appeared in an unexpected folder, restore nothing until you have checked the application installation and run a full malware scan.

If Defender reports a detection rather than a missing file, follow the security product’s remediation guidance first. A DLL with the right filename is not automatically safe.

Fix 4: Confirm the complete BDE installation

idasci32.dll is loaded by the BDE engine. It is not normally a standalone component.

The affected folder may need files such as:

  • idapi32.dll
  • idpdx32.dll
  • iddbas32.dll
  • idodbc32.dll
  • idapi32.cfg
  • idr20009.dll
  • blw32.dll
  • bantam.dll
  • BDE language or .BTL files

The exact set varies by application and BDE release. Do not treat this list as a requirement to download each file separately.

  1. Right-click the file and choose Properties.
  2. Check whether Windows shows an Unblock option on the General tab.
  3. Use the application’s repair installer rather than replacing individual files.
  4. Check that the application still points to its original BDE directory.
  5. Ask the vendor to restore the BDE configuration and database aliases.
  6. Avoid manually inventing registry values.

A present-but-unloadable DLL can indicate a damaged file, wrong build, missing dependency, permissions problem, or incompatible architecture. A “Bad Image” or “not designed to run on Windows” message points to a broader loading problem rather than proving that this particular filename is wrong.

Fix 5: Handle 32-bit BDE on 64-bit Windows

BDE is a 32-bit legacy runtime. A 32-bit application can generally run on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ 32-bit compatibility layer, but it still needs the correct 32-bit BDE files and configuration.

Use these checks:

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Details.
  3. Start the affected program.
  4. Check whether its process appears while it is loading.
  5. Confirm that the installer supplied by the vendor is the 32-bit version required by the application.
  6. Do not replace BDE with a hypothetical 64-bit idasci32.dll.
  7. Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32.

If the program depends on obsolete BDE behavior, test it in a vendor-supported environment or a controlled virtual machine. BDE is deprecated and has no native 64-bit implementation. A maintained replacement may require the application vendor to migrate the program to another database framework.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when broader problems exist

Because idasci32.dll belongs to a third-party application, System File Checker normally will not restore it. Use Windows repair commands when several unrelated programs fail, Windows components report errors, or other protected system files are also damaged.

  1. Press Windows, type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Repair or reinstall the affected application again.

Microsoft documents DISM repair and System File Checker. These commands check Windows itself; they generally do not supply a missing BDE DLL.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM while guessing which Windows component is damaged can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and identify what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; reinstalling the affected BDE application remains the definitive fix for this file.

Fix 7: Update drivers only if the application has a separate device problem

A graphics, printer, storage, or database connection driver is not a substitute for BDE. Device Manager will not normally restore idasci32.dll.

Use it only when the application also reports a hardware or device failure:

  1. Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
  2. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Printers, Disk drives, or Network adapters.
  3. Right-click the affected device.
  4. Select Update driver.
  5. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  6. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For a legacy program, obtain drivers from the device manufacturer where possible. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers and show what needs updating, while driver installation requires the full version; it will not replace the BDE runtime or repair the application’s database configuration.

What not to do

Do not download a random DLL

Avoid DLL download sites and files copied from another computer. The file may contain malware, belong to a different BDE build, have the wrong architecture, or lack the companion files the application needs.

Use the original application installer, trusted company deployment media, a known-good backup from the same application and version, or the application’s official vendor support channel.

Do not copy it into System32

idasci32.dll is not a shared Windows system component. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 can hide the real installation problem and cause another application to load the wrong file.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A BDE database driver is loaded by the BDE engine and is not normally repaired with this command.

Running:

regsvr32 idasci32.dll

will usually produce an error or accomplish nothing useful. Use the application’s installer or BDE setup utility instead.

Do not overwrite databases

Uninstallers and old setup programs can remove settings or application folders. Back up all user databases before repairing or reinstalling.

If the application still will not start

Collect these details before contacting the vendor:

  • The exact application name and version shown in its shortcut or About screen.
  • The complete error text.
  • The full path where idasci32.dll exists, if present.
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Whether the problem began after reinstalling Windows, restoring a backup, cleaning the disk, updating the application, or an antivirus event.
  • Whether idapi32.dll and the application’s other BDE files are present.
  • Whether the application uses a network database or local database.
  • Whether more than one BDE directory exists.

If reinstalling produces the same error, the application may be reading an old BDE registry configuration, using a different directory, or missing a database alias. At that point, the application’s vendor must provide the correct BDE setup procedure.

FAQ

Is idasci32.dll part of Windows?

No. It is a 32-bit Borland Database Engine ASCII/text driver installed by a legacy application.

Is it a Visual C++ or DirectX file?

No. Installing Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET is not the normal solution.

Can I download only idasci32.dll?

You should not. Restore the complete BDE installation from the affected application’s original installer or trusted vendor media.

Does regsvr32 fix it?

Normally no. BDE loads this driver through its database engine rather than treating it as an ordinary COM component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does it appear after reinstalling Windows?

The Windows installation may have removed the old application’s files, BDE configuration, registry settings, or database drivers. Reinstalling Windows does not automatically restore third-party legacy runtimes.

Will SFC restore the file?

Usually no. SFC repairs protected Windows resources, while idasci32.dll belongs to a third-party BDE installation.

Can a 32-bit BDE application run on 64-bit Windows?

Often, yes, if the required 32-bit application and BDE package are installed correctly. The application still needs its original configuration and companion files.

What if the file is present but the program still fails?

Repair the complete application. The problem may be idapi32.dll, a BDE configuration file, a missing language file, an incompatible build, permissions, or another dependency rather than idasci32.dll itself.
