Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute“The program can’t start because auxiliarydisplaycpl.dll is missing from your computer.” The auxiliarydisplaycpl.dll file is a Microsoft Windows SideShow Control Panel component, not a normal Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime.
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, its absence can be normal because Windows SideShow was removed from newer Windows releases. The safest fix is usually to identify the obsolete program, startup entry, or legacy device that still requests the file rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use this decision list before changing anything:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11, and the error appears during startup: find and remove or update the obsolete caller.
- Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8, and the file is missing: repair Windows with DISM where supported, then run System File Checker.
- The error began after antivirus activity: inspect quarantine and verify the file before restoring it.
- The error appears when opening an old Control Panel item or connecting legacy hardware: repair or remove the related device software and driver.
- The file exists but Windows says “specified module could not be found”: a dependency may be missing. The named DLL is not necessarily the only problem.
- The problem occurs in one user account only: check that profile’s startup items, scheduled tasks, and per-user application settings.
Do not begin by installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Do not copy auxiliarydisplaycpl.dll from a random DLL website.
What auxiliarydisplaycpl.dll is
AuxiliaryDisplayCpl.dll is associated with the Microsoft Windows SideShow Control Panel. SideShow provided a Control Panel interface for configuring compatible SideShow devices and gadgets. Microsoft documented its location as Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Windows SideShow, where it appeared only when compatible hardware was installed.

The component shipped with Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8-era SideShow features. Microsoft later deprecated SideShow without a replacement, and the SideShow Control Panel was removed in Windows 8.1. See Microsoft’s documentation for the Windows SideShow Control Panel, Windows API deprecations, and Control Panel canonical names.
On a supported legacy installation, the file normally belonged under the Windows system directory. On 64-bit Windows:
- A 64-bit copy normally belongs in
C:WindowsSystem32. - A 32-bit copy normally belongs in
C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Those names are counterintuitive. System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files.

Error during Windows startup
A startup entry, scheduled task, service, or legacy device utility may still be trying to load SideShow. On Windows 10 or 11, this is more likely than a genuinely missing Windows component.
Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Startup apps, and disable only entries you recognize as related to old hardware or software. Restart and check whether the message returns.
For scheduled tasks:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
taskschd.mscand press Enter. - Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks whose names match old device software or recently removed programs.
- Open a task’s Actions tab before disabling it.
- Disable it only after confirming that it calls the obsolete program.
For a service:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Look for a service belonging to the old device or application.
- Check its executable path in the service properties.
- Update or uninstall the parent software instead of deleting the DLL.
Error when launching one program
Repair or reinstall the program that reports the message. Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the program, choose Advanced options if available, and select Repair or Reset. If those options are absent, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.

If the program is old and specifically expects Windows SideShow, it may not be compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11. Compatibility mode may help with some applications:
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode.
- Choose an appropriate older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then start the program again.
Compatibility mode cannot restore a Windows component that was removed from the operating system. If the program still fails, replace it with a current version or remove it.
Error during legacy-device installation
Disconnect the device, restart Windows, and obtain a driver or utility intended for your exact Windows version from the hardware manufacturer. Do not force a Vista or Windows 7 SideShow package into Windows 10 or Windows 11.
To inspect the device:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Unknown devices, Human Interface Devices, and relevant hardware categories.
- Right-click the suspected device and select Properties.
- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver if a compatible driver is available.
- If the device is no longer used, select Uninstall device, disconnect it, and restart.
When manually searching for drivers, the difficult part is matching the hardware model, Windows release, architecture, and driver package. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its full version performs the driver installation. It is optional, and for a program-owned problem, reinstalling the parent program remains the definitive fix.
Repair Windows system files on Vista, 7, or 8
Use this path when the computer should contain SideShow and the error began after a failed update, Windows reinstall, disk cleanup, antivirus quarantine, or general system corruption.

- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a source. If Windows Update cannot provide the required repair files, Microsoft documents this alternative pattern:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a matching Windows installation source. The source must match the installed Windows release closely enough to provide compatible files.
Repairing a component store manually can involve several rounds of commands and log checking. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its full version performs the repair. It is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC remain the appropriate first-line tools.
Run SFC on Windows 7
Windows 7 supports System File Checker, but the modern DISM /RestoreHealth workflow is not available in the same way. Open an administrator Command Prompt and run:
sfc /scannow
Restart after it finishes. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, use Windows Update, matching installation media, Startup Repair, System Restore, or an in-place repair installation as appropriate. Microsoft describes the Windows 7 limitations in its Windows upgrade troubleshooting guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo save details about files SFC could not repair, run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
Open sfcdetails.txt from the desktop and look for entries showing that a file could not be repaired. Microsoft explains this process in its System File Checker documentation.
Check antivirus quarantine
If the error began after a security scan:
- Open your antivirus application.
- Select Quarantine, History, or Protection history.
- Search for
AuxiliaryDisplayCpl.dll. - Check the original path shown for the file.
- Do not restore it if it came from a temporary folder, user-download folder, or unknown application directory.
- Restore it only if the operating system version should contain SideShow, the path is the expected Windows system directory, and the file has a valid Microsoft digital signature.
- Run a full or offline security scan before continuing if malware is possible.
A restored file should not be treated as proof that the system is clean. If it is immediately quarantined again, leave it quarantined and repair or reinstall Windows instead.

If the file exists but still will not load
A message such as “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency of auxiliarydisplaycpl.dll is missing. It does not always mean the named file itself is absent.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the following:
- Confirm the file is in the expected system directory.
- Right-click it, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab.
- Do not trust filename or file size alone.
- Confirm that the program requesting it matches the Windows architecture it supports.
- Repair Windows with DISM and SFC where applicable.
- Repair or reinstall the program that triggers the error.
A 32-bit application may require 32-bit dependencies even on 64-bit Windows. Do not copy a file between System32 and SysWOW64 as a guess.
Why regsvr32 usually is not the fix
Do not run this by default:
regsvr32 AuxiliaryDisplayCpl.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command, and a Control Panel component does not become functional merely because someone attempts to register it. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference.
If regsvr32 reports that an entry point is missing, that does not prove the file is damaged. It usually means registration does not apply to that DLL.
Use System Restore or repair installation
Use System Restore when the problem began after a driver, update, or application change and a suitable restore point exists:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore and restart.
System Restore may remove recently installed drivers or applications, but it does not normally remove personal documents.
If SFC cannot repair the component and System Restore does not help, use matching Windows installation media for an in-place repair installation. Back up important files first. A clean reinstall should be the final option, not the first response to one missing legacy component.

What to avoid
Do not download auxiliarydisplaycpl.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into System32, SysWOW64, a game folder, or an application directory. That approach can introduce malware, use the wrong architecture, mismatch the Windows release, and leave the actual damaged component or obsolete caller untouched.
There is no need to reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET as a first response. Those packages are not the source of this Windows SideShow Control Panel component.
FAQ
Should Windows 10 or Windows 11 contain auxiliarydisplaycpl.dll?
Not necessarily. SideShow was removed in Windows 8.1, so a missing file on Windows 10 or 11 may be expected. Investigate the program, startup task, service, or legacy device that still requests it.
Where should the file be?
On a compatible legacy Windows installation, it normally belonged in the Windows system directory. On 64-bit Windows, 64-bit system files use System32 and 32-bit files use SysWOW64. The process architecture determines which copy is required.
Can I download the file manually?
Do not use random DLL download sites sites. Repair the Windows installation with DISM and SFC, restore a verified quarantined file when appropriate, or repair the application that owns the error.
Why does the error mention a missing module when the file exists?
A dependency loaded by the named DLL may be missing or incompatible. Repair Windows and the calling program rather than repeatedly replacing the visible filename.

What if the error appears only in one user profile?
Check that profile’s Task Manager > Startup apps, scheduled tasks, and application settings. Create a temporary test account if necessary. If the error disappears there, repair or remove the stale per-user startup entry rather than replacing system files.
What should I do if the error returns after repair?
Review the CBS log, check disk health, inspect antivirus history, and identify the caller in Event Viewer or Task Manager. Repeated corruption can indicate a damaged component store or storage problem. On Windows 10 or 11, persistent errors usually point to obsolete software rather than a required SideShow file.
