ext-ms-win-advapi32-auth-l1-1-0.dll is a genuine Windows API-set contract, not a normal application runtime DLL. If Windows says it is missing or cannot load, repair Windows first, then check whether the affected application is compatible with your Windows build.
What this file is
Windows API sets provide loader-facing names that route application calls to implementation DLLs. The ext- prefix indicates that the API set may not exist on every Windows edition or build. Microsoft documents this behavior in its Windows API sets reference.

What the error message means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because ext-ms-win-advapi32-auth-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because ext-ms-win-advapi32-auth-l1-1-0.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting ext-ms-win-advapi32-auth-l1-1-0.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing.
“Missing” or “not found” can mean the Windows component is damaged, the application targets an incompatible Windows build, or a dependency of the requested module is unavailable. “Specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency rather than the named file itself. “Not designed to run on Windows” may indicate corruption, a wrong architecture, tampering, or an incompatible dependency.
Write down the complete message, error code, application name, and the path shown in the dialog before changing anything.
Fix 1: Repair Windows system files
This is the correct first repair when several applications fail, the error began after an update, or Windows has recently suffered a crash, cleanup operation, disk problem, or security-removal event.
Run DISM and SFC
- Select Start.
- Type Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Right-click the result and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if the percentage appears to pause.
- When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart again if requested.
- Test the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files against that repaired store. Microsoft documents this sequence in its guide to fixing Windows Update corruptions.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. Repeated failures require the escalation steps below rather than endless command retries.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting through Windows repair results and trying to determine what changed; its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and an application incompatibility still requires updating or reinstalling that application.
If DISM cannot find repair files
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, use a repair source that matches the installed Windows version. Microsoft documents syntax such as:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\serverc$windows /LimitAccess
The source must match the operating-system version. Do not point DISM at an arbitrary Windows folder from another computer. See Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 2: Reinstall the affected application
If only one game or program fails while Windows and other applications work normally, the application installation is the more likely problem.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and test the program.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
- For a desktop program without those options, open its own launcher or installer and look for Repair, Verify, or Scan and repair.
- If the problem remains, uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the application developer or the official game launcher.
- Install it again and test before adding unofficial patches or copied DLL files.
For Steam games, use the game’s properties and select Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Other launchers use similar wording.
Do not assume that reinstalling the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable will repair this API-set contract. Visual C++ is relevant when the error names files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. If your message names one of those files, use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable.
Fix 3: Check Windows compatibility and architecture
An older Windows installation may not provide the API contract expected by a newer application. Conversely, a program may have been built for a Windows release or architecture that it does not support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck your Windows build
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
winver. - Press Enter.
- Record the Windows edition and build shown.
- Compare it with the application’s official system requirements.
- Install all available updates through Settings > Windows Update.
- Check the application developer’s requirements for Windows 10 or Windows 11 support.
Do not copy a newer API-set file into an older Windows installation. The loader, API-set schema, and host DLLs must agree.
Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
On 64-bit Windows:
System32normally contains 64-bit system binaries.SysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system binaries.
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but architecture errors are not fixed by downloading a random 32-bit DLL. If the program is old, check its documentation for supported Windows versions and compatibility settings.
To inspect the application architecture, check its official documentation or ask the developer. Avoid relying on the filename alone. If the error began after replacing an executable, launcher, mod, or plug-in, restore the original application files and run the launcher’s verification tool.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
A legitimate Windows component can be quarantined during a cleanup or false-positive event. A copy with this name inside an application folder may also be unrelated to the protected Windows component.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the DLL or the affected application.
- Check the reported file path and detection name.
- Do not restore a copy from an application folder merely because its filename looks familiar.
- If the item is clearly a Windows system file and your organization’s security policy permits restoration, restore it.
- Run a fresh scan with Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
If the file disappears again, or multiple unrelated DLLs are affected, investigate malware and disk health rather than repeatedly restoring files.
Fix 5: Install or update a related driver only when the timing fits
This DLL is not a graphics or chipset driver. Driver repair is relevant only if the error began immediately after installing a device utility, hardware package, or driver-dependent application.

- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver obtained from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the issue began directly after a driver update, select Roll Back Driver when available. Do not uninstall unrelated drivers simply because the DLL name contains advapi32.
Outbyte Driver Updater can help when you are manually comparing hardware entries and guessing which of many drivers is stale; its free scan identifies reported driver issues, while installing updates requires the full version. It is optional, and it will not replace the need to repair an incompatible application.
Fix 6: Use Windows recovery options
Use recovery when the error started immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, application installation, or system modification.
System Restore
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if available.
- Pick a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
System Restore normally preserves personal files but can remove recent drivers, applications, and system changes. Microsoft explains the available Windows recovery options.
Reinstall the current Windows version on Windows 11
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. The option may be unavailable on managed computers or some Windows builds.
If corruption continues after DISM, SFC, and recovery, back up your files and perform an in-place repair installation using matching Microsoft media. A clean installation is a last resort. Repeated corruption can also indicate failing storage, malware, or a damaged user profile.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
Unverified DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, or a file intended for a different Windows build. Even a genuine-looking replacement may not repair the API-set schema or the host components that Windows uses.
Use Windows Update, Windows repair tools, the affected program’s official installer, or matching Microsoft installation media instead.
Do not copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or the game folder
Manual copying can create version and architecture mismatches. It can also hide the real cause, particularly when the application is incompatible with the installed Windows build.
Do not run regsvr32 on this file
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general DLL repair command, and an API-set stub is not a normal COM component. Running this is not a valid repair:
regsvr32 ext-ms-win-advapi32-auth-l1-1-0.dll
Do not install runtimes at random
Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are not universal answers for every missing-DLL message. Install a runtime only when the error or the application’s official requirements identify it.
Information to collect if the problem remains
Before requesting support, record:
- Windows edition and build from
winver - Application or game name and version
- Complete error text and error code
- Whether one program or several programs fail
- The file path shown in the error
- Whether a similarly named file exists under
System32orSysWOW64 - Whether the issue began after an update, installation, cleanup, antivirus action, or driver change
- The final messages from DISM and SFC
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
FAQ
Is ext-ms-win-advapi32-auth-l1-1-0.dll malware?
The filename represents a legitimate Windows API-set contract. The filename alone does not prove that every copy is safe. Location, digital signature, Windows integrity, and the security event matter. Treat an unexpected copy inside an application folder cautiously.
Is this file supplied by Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. It is associated with Windows API-set behavior and is not a normal redistributable runtime file.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
No. API-set contracts are not repaired by COM registration.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does only one application fail?
The application may be damaged, incompatible with the installed Windows build, or using an incorrect local dependency. Repair or verify that application before changing Windows system folders.
Why does the message say “module could not be found” when the file exists?
The loader may be unable to find a dependency or a compatible implementation. The named file’s presence does not prove that the complete dependency chain is healthy.
Will DISM and SFC always fix it?
No. They repair Windows corruption, but they cannot make an application compatible with an unsupported Windows build or repair a broken application installation.
