ovtfboot.dll Is Missing: Repair the Old Camera Driver Safely

Length9 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

The ovtfboot.dll errors you may see

Windows may display messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because ovtfboot.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “There was a problem starting ovtfboot.dll.”
  • “Error loading ovtfboot.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because ovtfboot.dll was not found.”
  • “ovtfboot.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These messages usually appear when an old camera or scanner application starts, not because Windows itself needs this file.

The 60-second answer

ovtfboot.dll is a legacy application DLL associated with OmniVision camera and scanner software. Reported file inventories associate it with the MS534b USB Camera and the OVTScanner software family.

The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the original camera, scanner, or OEM device package. Do not download a loose copy of the DLL into C:WindowsSystem32. If you no longer use the hardware, remove the obsolete program and its leftover startup entry instead.

Reported copies are Win32/x86 files associated with the internal name MSBootDll. File inventories report version 6.0.0.1, a size of 32 KB, and OmniVision copyright information, but those are third-party metadata details rather than a current vendor specification. The exact installation path depends on the device and installer.

What caused the error

The most likely causes are:

What changed What it usually means Best response
Camera software was uninstalled A startup entry or helper remained Remove the leftover entry or reinstall the package
A driver was removed The application lost its supporting files Reinstall the OEM camera or scanner package
Antivirus quarantined the file The DLL was detected or mistakenly removed Check Protection History, then reinstall if needed
Windows was upgraded The old package may no longer be registered correctly Install the matching legacy package
Disk cleanup or migration occurred Application files were copied incompletely Reinstall from the original source
The error appears at every boot A stale startup item, service, or scheduled task remains Identify and disable the parent entry

“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that ovtfboot.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency required by the DLL.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the original camera package

This is the most reliable repair when the camera or scanner is still needed.

Find the installed program

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Open Installed apps.
  4. Search for:
  5. OmniVision
  6. OVT
  7. OVT Scanner
  8. MS534b
  9. Camera
  10. Scanner
  11. A utility supplied by your computer or device manufacturer
  12. Open the program’s three-dot menu.
  13. Select Advanced options if available.
  14. Choose Repair.

Start the program again after the repair. If the error remains, return to the same screen and use Reset where available. Reset may remove the application’s settings.

For older desktop software:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the OmniVision, OVT Scanner, camera, or scanner program.
  5. Choose Repair or Change if the option exists.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart Windows.

If the program is not listed, reinstall it from the computer manufacturer, camera manufacturer, scanner manufacturer, or the original installation media. Microsoft Update Catalog also contains historical OmniVision driver packages, but match the package to the exact device and Windows version rather than installing the first search result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reported connection between ovtfboot.dll, MSBootDll, MS534b USB Camera, and OVT Scanner packages is strong, but it does not prove that every copy came from the same installer. The device model and the application named in the error should guide the reinstall.

Check whether the repair worked

After restarting:

  1. Open the camera or scanner application.
  2. Connect the device.
  3. Start a preview or scan.
  4. Confirm that the error does not return.

If the application starts but the device is not detected, continue with the driver steps below. If the error returns before the application opens, check the file path and event details.

Fix 2: Reinstall the matching device driver

A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, and the reported ovtfboot.dll copies are 32-bit. That does not mean you should install a 64-bit replacement DLL. It means the application needs the 32-bit file supplied by its own camera or scanner package.

Logitech Brio 101 Full HD 1080p Webcam for Streaming and Meetings - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
  • Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

Use the manufacturer’s package first

  1. Disconnect the camera or scanner.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Remove the old OmniVision or OVT software if the installation is clearly damaged.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Install the driver and utility supplied for the exact device model.
  6. Restart again.
  7. Reconnect the device.

Do not copy files between C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. Windows uses those directories differently, and moving a DLL between them does not recreate the application’s complete installation or dependency chain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For historical packages, Microsoft Update Catalog may show OmniVision entries covering older Windows releases. Use the device model and Windows compatibility information to select a package. A package name containing X64 does not prove that every DLL inside it is 64-bit.

If manually comparing drivers and versions is taking longer than identifying the actual stale package, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it found, while driver installation requires the full version. Reinstalling the original camera or scanner package remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Cameras, Imaging devices, Sound, video and game controllers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Look for the camera or scanner, an unknown device, or a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the relevant device and choose Properties.
  6. Read the message under Device status.
  7. Select the Driver tab to see the provider and driver details.
  8. If the device is clearly using a broken driver, select Uninstall Device.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Install the correct OEM package.

Do not uninstall unrelated USB devices simply because they appear near the camera. If the device is no longer used, removal is usually preferable to forcing old software to run.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may have removed ovtfboot.dll, especially if the file was stored in an unusual application directory or the old package was already damaged.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Open any detection that names ovtfboot.dll or the camera application.
  6. Check the file path and detection details.

Do not restore the file simply because the application needs it. Restore it only when the file came from a trusted, identifiable OEM installation and the surrounding package is legitimate. Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file puts it back where Defender may detect it again.

The safer response is usually to reinstall the complete camera or scanner package from the manufacturer. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan if the DLL appeared in an unexpected writable folder, particularly if its publisher or location does not match the installed application.

Fix 4: Identify a leftover startup entry

If the error appears during every boot but no camera program is visible, Windows may be trying to launch a removed helper.

Check Installed apps and Startup

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Startup.
  2. Look for OmniVision, OVT, camera, scanner, imaging, or an unknown entry.
  3. Turn off an entry only when its name and location clearly relate to the obsolete software.
  4. Restart Windows.

You can also open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Startup apps, and inspect the Publisher and Startup impact columns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not delete an unfamiliar startup item solely because it has a generic name. First right-click it, choose Open file location if available, and inspect the executable’s properties. A stale OVT or OmniVision path supports the conclusion that the old package was only partially removed.

Check scheduled tasks and services

If the message persists:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter taskschd.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Review Task Scheduler Library for an OmniVision, OVT, camera, or scanner task.
  5. Disable only an entry that clearly belongs to removed software.

For services:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for a clearly identified OmniVision or OVT service.
  5. Open its properties and note the executable path.
  6. Stop and disable it only if the associated device and software are no longer needed.

If the camera is obsolete, uninstalling the parent program and disabling its stale startup reference is safer than replacing the missing DLL.

Fix 5: Inspect the DLL path and Event Viewer

When the file exists but still fails, identify which program is loading it.

Inspect the file

  1. Search File Explorer for ovtfboot.dll.
  2. Right-click a result and select Properties.
  3. Check the General and Details tabs.
  4. Record the full path, file description, product information, and digital signature if present.

A legitimate copy would normally be inside the associated application or driver directory. An unexpected copy in a temporary or user-writable directory deserves additional scanning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Event Viewer

  1. Press Windows + X.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Open Windows Logs > Application.
  4. Look for an error at the same time the DLL message appeared.
  5. Record the failing application name, faulting module, and path.

These details can distinguish a missing application DLL from a missing dependency. If the error says the module cannot be found even though the file is present, reinstall the complete package rather than copying another DLL beside it.

Fix 6: Use DISM and SFC only for Windows corruption

ovtfboot.dll is not identified as a Windows component, so SFC and DISM are not the primary fix. Use them when other Windows components are also failing or when system corruption is suspected.

(Tips: Incompatible with Windows Hello)
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair protected Windows components; they do not reinstall an OmniVision application-owned DLL.

When repeating system commands without knowing what changed becomes the problem, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues; its free scan reports what it finds, while repair requires the full version. For this file, reinstalling the owning camera or scanner package remains the definitive repair.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply

Do not run:

regsvr32 ovtfboot.dll

unless the device software’s documentation specifically instructs you to do so. regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs. A camera boot or helper DLL is not automatically a COM server.

Registering it may produce an entry-point error, and it cannot restore a missing dependency, startup entry, driver, or application installation.

Avoid loose DLL downloads

Downloading ovtfboot.dll from a random DLL site is risky because the file may be:

  • The wrong version
  • The wrong architecture
  • Modified or malicious
  • Missing its own dependencies
  • Unsuitable for the installed camera package

Copying it into System32 can also create DLL search-order and side-loading problems. Use the original OEM installer, trusted device media, or a correctly matched Microsoft Update Catalog package instead. No current standalone Microsoft runtime package is established as the solution for this file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error began after a system change

If the error appeared immediately after a driver installation, software removal, or system update:

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Review the available recovery options.
  3. Use System Restore only if a suitable restore point exists and the change clearly caused the failure.

System Restore rolls back system files and settings without normally affecting personal files, but it may also remove a recently installed application or driver.

If malware is suspected, run a full Microsoft Defender scan. Consider an offline scan when the file keeps returning, appears in an unexpected directory, or is associated with an unknown startup executable.

Frequently asked questions

Is ovtfboot.dll part of Windows?

No evidence indicates that it ships with Windows itself. It is associated with old third-party OmniVision camera and scanner software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which program installed it?

The strongest available identification points to OmniVision’s MS534b USB Camera and OVT Scanner packages. The exact parent program depends on the computer, camera, or scanner manufacturer.

Is ovtfboot.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?

Reported copies are 32-bit Win32 files. A 32-bit application can use the file on 64-bit Windows. Do not install a 64-bit replacement merely because Windows itself is 64-bit.

Where should it be located?

Usually inside the application or driver package that installed it. The exact path varies by installer and Windows version. It should not normally be placed in C:WindowsSystem32.

What if I no longer use the camera?

Uninstall the related OmniVision, OVT, camera, or scanner software. Then disable the leftover startup entry, scheduled task, or service that still references it. The error may disappear without replacing the DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information should I provide when seeking help?

Record the exact error, the program that triggers it, your Windows version, the full DLL path, the camera or scanner model, the Event Viewer entry, and whether Windows Security quarantined the file.
