cnhl970.dll is a Canon-related application DLL, not a normal Windows component. If Windows says cnhl970.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the Canon printer or scanner software that installed it rather than downloading the DLL by itself.
What cnhl970.dll is
Public file metadata associates cnhl970.dll with CANON INC. and labels the component LLD. It appears to belong to an older Canon printer or scanner driver component, although public information does not reliably identify one exact Canon model.
| File detail | What can be established |
|---|---|
| Filename | cnhl970.dll |
| Associated software | Canon printer or scanner software |
| Public description | LLD in file metadata |
| Windows component | Not verified as one |
| Universal replacement | None |
| Exact Canon model | Cannot be determined from the filename alone |
The file is not known to be supplied by Windows, Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. The Canon model, executable, and installation path matter because different driver packages can use different files and dependencies.
Public records also disagree about the file’s reported size and architecture. That is why there is no safe, universal cnhl970.dll replacement to download. A file that looks correct may still be the wrong build, architecture, signature, or dependency set.

The safest first fix: reinstall the exact Canon package
A damaged or partially removed Canon driver is the most likely cause. Use Canon’s official support site and select the exact printer or scanner model rather than searching for the DLL filename.
1. Identify the Canon device
Check the model label on the printer or scanner. You can also find it in Windows:
- Right-click Start and select Settings.
- Open Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon device and note its model.
For scanners or older devices that do not appear there:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a Canon entry and record its full model name.
If the device is missing, check the label, its original packaging, or the application that normally controls it.
2. Download the matching driver
Open Canon’s official support portal manually. Select:
- The exact printer or scanner model
- Your Windows edition
- The correct 32-bit or 64-bit package when Canon offers that choice
- The printer driver, scanner driver, or complete software package recommended for that model
Do not choose a package merely because its name contains a similar model number. Canon’s support system requires the model before it can provide the correct download.
3. Remove the damaged installation
Save any open work, then disconnect the USB cable if the Canon installer or removal utility requests it.
Try the Canon uninstaller first. If it is not available:

- Restart Windows.
You can also remove the device itself:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon device.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart the computer.
Avoid deleting random files from C:WindowsSystem32 or the Windows driver store. Those locations can contain components used by other devices.
4. Install the fresh package
- Right-click the Canon installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Connect the printer or scanner only when the installer requests it.
- Allow the installer to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Print a test page or open the Canon scanning application and perform a test scan.
The repair worked if the Canon application opens without the DLL error and the device completes a print or scan job. If the installer reports that the model is unsupported, look for an archived driver listed by Canon for your Windows version or contact Canon support. Do not mix files from another Canon model.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through several driver packages and checking which device drivers are stale; its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair or driver installation is handled by the full version. For this Canon-specific error, reinstalling the exact Canon package remains the definitive fix.
Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
An antivirus action can remove a working Canon DLL, leaving the application installed but incomplete. Do not immediately disable protection or restore an unknown copy.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for a recent Canon-related detection or an entry mentioning
cnhl970.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect its original file path and detection details.
If the file came from the genuine Canon installation, is digitally signed by Canon, and the detection is clearly a false positive, you can review Microsoft’s recovery options. Restore it only when its origin is verifiable, then reinstall or repair the Canon package.
If the path points to a DLL download sites site, a temporary folder, or an unfamiliar application, remove it instead. Run a Full scan from Virus & threat protection. For a persistent or suspicious infection, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
Protection History does not retain entries indefinitely, so check it soon after the error appears.
Repair Windows components if the Canon installer also fails
cnhl970.dll is not verified as a protected Windows system file. Therefore, System File Checker may report no problem even when the Canon driver is broken. Use Windows repair commands when several applications are failing, Windows components are damaged, or the Canon installer itself cannot run.

Run SFC second
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart the computer. Try the Canon installer again.
If SFC says it found and repaired corrupted files, test Windows and then reinstall the Canon package. If it says no integrity violations were found, that does not clear the Canon driver: the DLL may simply be outside the set of protected Windows files. If DISM or SFC reports an error, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the commands again before investigating the Canon package further.
Repeating SFC and DISM without recording what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the Canon software is still required when the Canon package itself is the damaged component.

Check architecture and dependencies
A missing-file message does not always mean the named file is absent. Windows can show:
The specified module could not be found.
That can mean cnhl970.dll is missing, or that another DLL required by it is missing.
Architecture can also matter. A 32-bit Canon application may require a 32-bit Canon DLL even on 64-bit Windows. Do not assume that every file on a 64-bit computer must be 64-bit.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → About.
- Read System type.
Use the architecture specified by Canon’s model-specific download page, not an unrelated DLL listing. If the error says the file is “not designed to run on Windows,” possible causes include corruption, incompatible architecture, or an unofficial replacement. Remove unofficial copies and reinstall the complete Canon package.

To identify the program that is failing:
- Read the executable name in the error dialog.
- Note the full path if Windows displays one.
- Open Event Viewer from Start.
- Go to Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an Application Error entry at the time of the failure.
- Record the failing application and module names.
If only the Canon application fails, focus on Canon’s installer. If multiple unrelated programs fail, investigate Windows corruption or malware.
Use Device Manager for driver cleanup
When Windows keeps loading an old or broken Canon driver, remove the device package before reinstalling it.

Do not download cnhl970.dll separately
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, or a file with missing dependencies. Even a clean DLL may not fix the damaged Canon installation that originally caused the error.
The safe source is Canon’s official support portal, selected by exact device model and Windows version.
Do not copy it into System32
System32 is not a universal destination for third-party DLLs. Copying a Canon library there can make unrelated programs load the wrong version and can create file, permission, and dependency conflicts. Canon’s installer should place every component in its intended directory.
Do not run regsvr32 as a generic repair
Do not use:
regsvr32 cnhl970.dll
A printer or scanner support DLL is not automatically a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. regsvr32 applies when the DLL is designed to export the registration entry point expected by that component. It does not restore missing dependencies or rebuild a Canon driver installation. Running it on an ordinary driver library usually produces another error.
Do not use registry cleaners
Registry cleaners and automatic DLL fixers cannot determine which Canon model, architecture, or dependency set belongs on the computer. They can also remove references needed by older hardware.

When the Canon device is obsolete
If Canon no longer lists a driver for your model, record the exact model and Windows version before trying older software. A legacy driver may work only with a particular Windows edition or application architecture.
If no compatible official package exists, use Canon support documentation, a supported Windows computer, or replacement hardware. Avoid copying a driver directory from another PC. That copy may have a different architecture, signature, dependencies, or device configuration.

FAQ
Is cnhl970.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a Windows system DLL. Public metadata associates it with CANON INC. and Canon software.
Does Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET install it?
There is no evidence that those Microsoft runtimes provide cnhl970.dll. Reinstalling them is not the primary repair. Reinstall the Canon package first.
Which Canon printer installed it?
The filename alone does not identify one universal Canon model. Find the device in Printers & scanners, Device Manager, or on its physical label, then select that model in Canon’s support portal.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
No. The other computer may have a different Canon model, architecture, version, signature, or dependency set. Install the complete official package instead.
Why does SFC say everything is fine?
SFC repairs protected Windows files. It may not detect or restore a third-party Canon DLL, so a clean SFC result does not rule out a damaged Canon driver.
What if the DLL exists but the error remains?
A dependency may be missing, the file may be corrupted, the application may have the wrong architecture, or an unofficial copy may be in the search path. Check the full path and Event Viewer, remove unofficial copies, and reinstall the exact Canon package.
