wmitomi.dll errors may say “The program can’t start because wmitomi.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “The code execution cannot proceed because wmitomi.dll was not found,” “Error loading wmitomi.dll,” or “wmitomi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
Despite appearing when you launch a particular application, wmitomi.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component. Its description is CIM Provider Adapter, and it is associated with Windows Management Instrumentation, Windows Management Infrastructure, and Common Information Model management data.
Which fix applies to you
Use the symptom that best matches your PC:
- Several applications or Windows management tools fail: repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
- Only one application or game fails: repair or reinstall that application after repairing Windows.
- The problem began after antivirus activity: inspect Protection History before restoring anything.
- The error started after an update or upgrade: restart, install pending updates, and consider System Restore or update recovery.
- The error says the file is not designed for Windows: suspect corruption, an architecture mismatch, or a wrong replacement DLL.
- The problem returns after repairs: check for disk corruption or malware, then use Windows recovery or installation media.
Do not start by downloading wmitomi.dll from a DLL archive. A replacement can contain malware, target the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or hide the actual component-store problem.
What wmitomi.dll does
Windows management tools and applications use WMI and related management infrastructure to obtain system and device information. The CIM Provider Adapter connects parts of that management system.

That makes this file different from a game-specific dependency, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or ordinary application plugin. Historical Windows Management Framework packages included WMI, MI, and a Server Manager CIM Provider, but those legacy packages are not a general wmitomi.dll download for current Windows installations.
The filename alone cannot identify the application that displayed the error. The program may simply be the first component to notice that Windows has a damaged or unavailable dependency.
1. Install Windows updates and restart
Pending servicing updates can replace damaged Windows components.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not require an immediate restart.
- Launch the affected application again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not repeatedly restart without running the repair commands.

This is the primary repair for a missing or corrupted Windows copy of wmitomi.dll. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. The process can appear to pause for some time.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
A successful repair may report that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. SFC may also report that no integrity violations were found, which means the issue may belong to the application rather than the Windows file itself.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, do not copy a random DLL into a system folder. Use matching Windows installation media or an installation source for the same edition, language, and architecture. Microsoft documents the /Source and /LimitAccess options in its System File Checker repair guidance.
If SFC cannot repair every file, review the repair result before trying unrelated fixes. The detailed log is located at:

If manually hunting through Windows repair steps and repeating DISM/SFC makes it difficult to see what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show its findings; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for this Windows repair.
3. Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one program reports wmitomi.dll, the application may have a damaged installer, an incorrect dependency reference, or a broken update.
First try the application’s own repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If there is no Repair option, download the installer from the application developer’s official source and reinstall the program. For a game, use its launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files command before reinstalling the entire game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRestart Windows after the repair. If the program still reports the same Windows DLL, return to DISM and SFC rather than placing a downloaded copy beside the program executable.
Do not reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because a DLL is missing. Those runtimes are appropriate only when the error specifically names a runtime component from them.
4. Check Windows Security Protection History
Security software can quarantine a legitimate Windows file, although a missing file can also be a symptom of malware or tampering.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined, blocked, and removed items.
- Expand any detection related to
wmitomi.dll. - Check the original file path, detection name, and action taken.
Do not restore the file automatically. First confirm that the path belongs to the Windows installation, inspect the file’s digital signature if a copy is present, and consider a full scan. If malware is plausible, use an offline scan rather than allowing an uncertain file back into Windows.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After a verified false positive, restore or allow the file only through Windows Security, then run DISM and SFC to repair the Windows component. If the detection returns, treat the system as potentially compromised and investigate the cause before launching sensitive applications.

5. Check the Windows path and architecture
On 64-bit Windows, 64-bit system files normally reside in:
C:WindowsSystem32
32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications normally reside in:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
The names are counterintuitive: System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. The exact location and version can vary by Windows edition, architecture, and servicing state.

A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows can therefore need a 32-bit copy of wmitomi.dll, while a 64-bit application needs the 64-bit system copy. The same filename does not make different builds interchangeable. Historical public listings include Windows versions such as 6.2.9200.16384, 6.3.9600.16384, 10.0.10586.0, and 10.0.14393.0, but these are not a complete current inventory and should not be used to select a replacement.
To inspect a suspected copy:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the reported path.
- Right-click
wmitomi.dll. - Select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Review the Details tab for company and file information.
Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32, copy a 64-bit file into SysWOW64, or replace a current Windows file with one taken from another PC.
6. Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose the COM registration entry points expected by that utility, such as DllRegisterServer.
There is no evidence that ordinary repair of wmitomi.dll requires registration. Running this command:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →regsvr32 wmitomi.dll
may produce an entry-point or module error and will not restore a damaged Windows component. Use DISM and SFC instead.

7. Check optional Windows management components
If the error appears while using a Windows management console, server-management utility, or hardware administration tool, check whether an optional Windows feature was removed.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the listed Windows features.
- Enable only a feature required by the affected application or documented by Microsoft.
- Select OK and restart if prompted.
Do not enable random features to make the error disappear. WMI is a core Windows management technology, and changing unrelated optional components can make diagnosis harder.
For a hardware-management application, also check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the application.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and review the General and Events tabs.
- Use Update driver only when Windows or the device manufacturer provides a matching driver.
- Restart and test the application.
Driver updates are not a substitute for repairing wmitomi.dll, but they can matter when the error occurs alongside a newly broken device-management program. If manually checking dozens of hardware pages is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; the full version performs driver installation, and it is not required to repair this Windows DLL.
8. Recover from an update or failed upgrade
If the problem started immediately after Windows Update or an upgrade:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Open Update history.
- Select Uninstall updates, if the problematic update is identifiable.
- Alternatively, open Settings → System → Recovery.
- Use an available recovery option such as Go back or System Restore, depending on your installation.
System Restore can roll back system files, settings, and applications to an earlier restore point. It can also remove changes made after that point, so review the affected programs before confirming. Microsoft’s recovery options explain which choices are available for the current Windows installation.
On supported Windows 11 installations, another repair option is:
Recommended Free Tools
Settings → System → Recovery → Fix problems using Windows Update → Reinstall now
This reinstalls the same Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. The option may not appear on every Windows 11 configuration.

9. Check for disk corruption or malware
If repairs succeed but wmitomi.dll disappears again, check the underlying system.
Run a malware scan from Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options. Choose a full scan, or use Microsoft Defender Offline when the infection may interfere with Windows.
To check the file system without immediately forcing an offline repair:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
chkdsk /scan
Back up important files if storage corruption is suspected. Repeated file corruption can indicate a failing drive and may require hardware diagnostics.
When should Windows be reinstalled
Escalate when:
- DISM cannot repair the component store.
- SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired files.
- The same system files become corrupted again.
- Multiple Windows management tools fail.
- Malware or storage damage has affected system integrity.
Use matching Windows installation media for an in-place repair first when possible. Back up personal data before considering Reset this PC or a clean installation. A clean installation is a last resort, not the first response to one missing DLL.
FAQ
Is wmitomi.dll a virus?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. A copy with an unexpected path, invalid signature, or suspicious antivirus detection should be investigated rather than trusted.
Should I download wmitomi.dll?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or fail to match the installed Windows build. Repair Windows through Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
Is wmitomi.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No evidence identifies it as one of those runtimes. Reinstall them only if the actual error names a corresponding runtime file.
Why does only one game or application fail?
The application may be damaged or may be the first program to call the affected Windows management component. Run its repair or verification tool, then reinstall it from its official source if necessary.
What should I collect for support?
Record the Windows edition and build, application name, complete error text, reported file path, recent update or antivirus activity, Event Viewer entries, and the final DISM and SFC results. This information distinguishes an application failure from a Windows-wide component problem.
