ime.dll may produce messages such as “The program can’t start because ime.dll is missing from your computer,” “This application failed to start because ime.dll was not found,” or “Error loading ime.dll. The specified module could not be found.”

You may also see “The file ime.dll is missing or corrupted,” “The code execution cannot proceed because ime.dll was not found,” or “ime.dll is not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The 60-second answer

ime.dll is not established as a standard Windows system DLL. It is an application file, and public file inventories associate one 32-bit copy with Apache OpenOffice. That association is credible, but it is not a complete official specification, and another application may use the same filename.

Do not download a loose copy of ime.dll and place it in System32 or SysWOW64. First identify the program that displays the error. If OpenOffice is named, repair or reinstall OpenOffice using its official installer. If another executable is named, repair or reinstall that application from its vendor.

A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit DLL. Apache OpenOffice’s Windows distribution is x86, including when it runs on 64-bit Windows. Windows being 64-bit does not mean every application DLL must be 64-bit.

Why ime.dll is missing

The most likely causes are:

  • An incomplete or damaged application installation
  • An application update that failed
  • Antivirus quarantine or removal
  • An uninstall that left a startup entry behind
  • A wrong-architecture or unrelated DLL copied into the program folder
  • A missing dependency of ime.dll, rather than ime.dll itself
  • Malware or an altered application directory
  • Windows component corruption, usually only when several Windows features are also failing

When OpenOffice is the failing program, repairing or reinstalling it is the best first move. Public inventories associate ime.dll with OpenOffice installations, but reported file sizes, versions, hashes and paths conflict. Treat those database records as clues, not as a specification for downloading or replacing the file.

Also check the filename carefully. ime.dll is not the same as im-ime.dll, ImeBrokerps.dll or IMEAPIS.DLL. GTK software may use im-ime.dll, while Microsoft input-method components use different names.

Fix 1: Identify the program that owns ime.dll

Before changing Windows files, find out which executable is failing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read the complete error dialog and note the application name.
  2. Close the dialog.
  3. Try launching the program again from its normal shortcut.
  4. If the error appears during Windows startup, note whether it names a removed application.
  5. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  6. Search for the named application.
  7. Select its menu button and choose Advanced options, if available.
  8. Check whether Repair or Reset is offered.

If the error names OpenOffice, treat OpenOffice as the owner unless file inspection proves otherwise. If the message appears at startup after OpenOffice or another program was uninstalled, inspect Settings > Apps > Startup and Task Manager > Startup apps for a leftover entry. Remove the orphaned startup entry only after confirming which program created it.

You can also inspect the application’s installation directory. Right-click the program shortcut, choose Properties, select Open File Location, and look for ime.dll beside the application files. Do not assume that a file with the right name belongs to the program. Check its location, digital signature and the executable that loads it.

A “specified module could not be found” message can mean that ime.dll exists but a dependency it needs is missing. That is another reason to repair the owning application instead of copying a replacement file.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall OpenOffice

If OpenOffice is the program that fails, use its official Apache OpenOffice Windows installer. Do not obtain ime.dll separately.

Try Windows app repair first

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps.
  4. Find Apache OpenOffice.
  5. Select the three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if shown.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Launch OpenOffice again.

If the error remains, return to the same screen and use Uninstall. Restart Windows, then download the Windows installer from the official Apache OpenOffice download page. Use the matching x86 Windows package. Run the installer as an administrator by right-clicking it and choosing Run as administrator.

After installation, launch OpenOffice before restoring custom extensions or settings. If it starts normally, the missing file was likely caused by an incomplete or damaged installation.

If you use an older OpenOffice release for compatibility, obtain that installer from Apache’s official archive rather than copying a DLL from another release. Do not treat a reported version or file size from a third-party inventory as proof that it is the correct build.

If another application owns it

Use the same repair sequence for that application:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Locate the application named in the error.
  3. Select Advanced options > Repair, if available.
  4. Restart Windows and test it.
  5. If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the application.
  6. Download the installer from the application developer.
  7. Install the correct Windows architecture.
  8. Start the program before adding plugins, mods or custom files.

The definitive repair is reinstalling the program that installed the DLL. A Windows repair command cannot normally recreate an application-owned file.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Security software may have removed or quarantined ime.dll.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Expand recent detections.
  5. Look for an entry naming ime.dll or the affected application.
  6. Record the detection name and file path.
  7. Do not restore the file automatically.

Restore or allow the file only when all of these are true:

  • It came from the official application installer.
  • The file is located inside that application’s directory.
  • The application is trusted.
  • A current security scan does not identify the installer or program as malicious.

If you are uncertain, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the application from its official source. This replaces the file with a clean copy and avoids restoring a genuine threat.

Run a scan from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options. Choose Full scan if the file was altered unexpectedly. If malware is found, clean the system before reinstalling the affected application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check architecture and file location

A 32-bit program cannot safely use an arbitrary 64-bit DLL. The reverse is also true. This mismatch commonly produces “not designed to run on Windows” or entry-point errors.

Check the application architecture from its documentation or installer. OpenOffice’s official Windows package is x86, so its application DLLs must match that environment even on 64-bit Windows.

Do not copy ime.dll into:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64
  • A random application directory
  • A folder suggested by a DLL repair utility

Windows uses defined DLL search rules, including the application directory and system locations. Placing an unrelated DLL in one of those locations can cause version conflicts or DLL-preloading problems.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use these commands when several Windows components are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or system files appear corrupted. They are not the normal repair for an OpenOffice-owned ime.dll.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Choose Run as administrator.
  5. Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. If both commands complete successfully but the same application still reports ime.dll, reinstall the application that owns it.

Running these commands repeatedly without identifying what changed rarely solves an application-specific DLL problem. If you want help identifying damaged Windows components rather than manually interpreting repeated command results, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when ime.dll belongs to that program.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall related drivers only when evidence points there

A driver is not the usual owner of ime.dll. Do not update drivers merely because a DLL error appeared. Consider this step only if the problem began after an input device, graphics, chipset or Windows update and Device Manager shows a related warning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Choose Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the failing application or device.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Choose Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows and test the application.

If the problem started immediately after a driver update:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Right-click the affected device.
  3. Choose Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
  6. Restart Windows.

Do not use Device Manager to replace ime.dll. It is not a general DLL repair tool.

Finding which of many installed drivers is stale can be tedious, especially when Windows reports only a generic device problem. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver issues; its free scan identifies what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Use the application’s official reinstall as the primary repair when that application owns ime.dll.

Fix 7: Use Windows recovery only after application repair fails

If the error began directly after a known Windows update, software installation or system change, recovery may help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System > Recovery.
  3. Review the available recovery options.
  4. Use System Restore if restore points exist and the failure began after a specific change.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  6. Test the application after Windows restarts.

Recovery should not be the first response to an isolated OpenOffice error. Reinstalling the owner is safer and more targeted.

Do not run regsvr32 ime.dll

regsvr32 is not a general repair command. It is intended for DLLs or OCX controls that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.

There is no verified evidence that this OpenOffice-associated ime.dll should be registered. Running:

regsvr32 ime.dll

may produce an error and will not restore a missing dependency or repair a damaged installation. Use regsvr32 only when the application’s vendor specifically instructs you to register that particular file.

Frequently asked questions

Is ime.dll a Windows system file?

It is not established as a standard Windows system DLL. Available evidence primarily associates one 32-bit copy with an installed application, especially Apache OpenOffice.

Should I download ime.dll from a DLL website?

No. A downloaded copy may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to another program or fail because a dependency is missing. Reinstall the application from its official developer-provided installer.

Should I copy it to System32?

No. That can create search-order conflicts and may place an application-private DLL where Windows does not expect it.

Is ime.dll the same as im-ime.dll?

No. The names are different. im-ime.dll is associated with a GTK Windows-IME module and should not replace ime.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will DISM and SFC restore it?

Normally no. They repair Windows components and protected Windows files, not an application-owned OpenOffice DLL.

Does ime.dll need registration?

Normally no. Do not use regsvr32 unless the owning vendor explicitly requires it.

What should I collect if reinstalling fails?

Record the exact error text, the executable named in the dialog, the full path where ime.dll is expected, whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit, any Windows Security quarantine action, and whether the message mentions a dependent module. That information identifies whether the remaining problem is the application, a dependency, security software or Windows itself.
