Its bazzite-deck image boots into Steam Gaming Mode while preserving a full desktop, making it a strong fit for handhelds, desktops and HTPCs. Choose Nobara if you want a more conventional Fedora-based desktop with dedicated handheld and Steam-HTPC editions. Choose ChimeraOS if your priority is a controller-first living-room gaming appliance with minimal maintenance.
None is universally better than SteamOS. The right choice depends on your hardware, game library, need for desktop applications, storefronts, dual-booting and tolerance for Linux troubleshooting.
What counts as a SteamOS alternative?
“SteamOS alternative” can mean several different things. You might want an operating system that:
- Boots directly into Steam Gaming Mode.
- Makes Steam and Proton gaming straightforward on a desktop PC.
- Turns a ROG Ally, Legion Go, GPD handheld or similar device into a Steam Deck-style system.
- Runs an HTPC from the sofa with a controller.
- Supports Epic Games Store, GOG, emulation, Lutris and non-Steam software.
- Offers a more open, configurable Linux desktop than SteamOS.
These goals overlap, but they are not identical. Bazzite and Nobara offer both desktop and console-oriented paths. ChimeraOS is more deliberately an appliance: its desktop exists mainly as a fallback and support surface rather than as the main experience.

Quick comparison
| Operating system | Best for | SteamOS-like interface | Desktop experience | Update model | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bazzite | Most handhelds, desktops and HTPCs | Strong, especially with bazzite-deck |
Full KDE Plasma or GNOME options | Fedora Atomic image updates with rollback | Hardware-specific Game Mode issues, especially on Nvidia and Intel |
| Nobara | Traditional Linux desktop users | Available through Steam-HTPC and Steam-Handheld editions | Strongest conventional desktop choice | Conventional Fedora-based distribution model | Edition choice and manual troubleshooting matter |
| ChimeraOS | Dedicated living-room gaming PCs | Core design goal | Limited and secondary | Complete system-image updates | Less customization, compatibility and same-drive dual-boot support |
This is a practical feature comparison, not a performance benchmark. No distribution can guarantee higher frame rates, better battery life or fewer frame-time problems without testing the same hardware, game and settings.
1. Bazzite: the best all-round SteamOS replacement
Bazzite is a custom Fedora Atomic image for desktops, handhelds, tablets and home-theater PCs. Its bazzite-deck variant is specifically designed for SteamOS-style use and boots directly into Steam Gaming Mode. The project also provides KDE Plasma and GNOME desktop images.
That combination makes Bazzite the default recommendation for most readers: you can have a console-like interface for gaming without giving up a normal Linux desktop for browsing, productivity, streaming or troubleshooting.
Why Bazzite stands out
bazzite-deckboots directly into Game Mode.- The Deck/HTPC image includes Steam and Lutris and provides SteamOS-oriented firmware, driver, fan-control and Gamescope adjustments.
- Decky Loader, EmuDeck, RetroDECK and ProtonUp-Qt can be selected during installation.
- Previous system images are retained, allowing a rollback after a problematic update.
- There are desktop images based on KDE Plasma or GNOME.
- The project targets AMD, Intel and Nvidia hardware, as well as a range of handheld devices.
Bazzite documents support for devices including Steam Deck hardware, ASUS ROG Ally models, Lenovo Legion Go systems and selected GPD handhelds. Support is device-specific, however. A distribution name is not proof that every button, gyro, RGB feature, screen orientation, suspend state or power profile will work on every model.

The important Bazzite distinction: choose the right image
“Install Bazzite” is incomplete advice. A desktop image, a bazzite-deck image and a GNOME or KDE variant are different choices. Use the project’s official image selector and installation documentation rather than assuming the first download is appropriate.
The Atomic model is also different from a conventional mutable Fedora installation. System software is delivered as an image, while Flatpaks and other supported mechanisms are preferred for many applications. Users who are used to freely modifying a system with dnf should understand image updates, layering, rebasing and rollback before changing the base system.

Hardware warning: Game Mode is not equally mature everywhere
Bazzite’s own documentation identifies Steam Gaming Mode and HTPC support for Nvidia and Intel as beta, with known issues. That does not mean Bazzite cannot run on Nvidia or Intel hardware; it means the SteamOS-like Game Mode experience is not as safe a recommendation as it is on supported AMD configurations.
If you encounter a black screen, Gamescope failure or a system that falls back to the desktop, do not assume a Steam setting will fix it. Consider a desktop-oriented Bazzite image, check the current hardware documentation or retain Windows as a fallback.
Who should choose Bazzite?
Choose Bazzite if you want the closest all-round SteamOS-style setup, especially on an AMD handheld or desktop. It is also a good fit if you value rollback, want a full desktop, or plan to use tools such as Lutris, EmuDeck or ProtonUp-Qt.
Bazzite is a less obvious choice if you want a completely conventional Linux installation, rely on Nvidia Game Mode, or dislike learning an image-based operating-system model.
2. Nobara: a conventional Fedora-based gaming desktop
Nobara is an independent Fedora-based distribution tuned for gaming, creative work and everyday desktop use. Its download page lists separate Official, GNOME, KDE, Steam-HTPC, Steam-Handheld and Nvidia-oriented editions.
That range makes Nobara the better choice for readers who want a normal Linux desktop first and a console interface second. It is less useful to describe Nobara as one single experience: the edition you select determines whether you are installing a conventional desktop, a living-room system, a handheld image or an Nvidia-focused build.

Why choose Nobara?
- The Official edition provides a familiar customized KDE desktop.
- The Steam-HTPC edition targets large displays and living-room PCs.
- The Steam-Handheld edition is aimed at Steam Deck-style handhelds and small screens.
- Nvidia-specific images include the proprietary Nvidia driver.
- The project provides first-boot guidance for updates, drivers, gaming tools and streaming setup.
- A conventional desktop makes normal applications, configuration and multitasking straightforward.
Nobara can be preferable to Bazzite when you want to install and manage a traditional desktop with fewer Atomic-specific concepts. It is also worth considering if you need a general-purpose system for browsing, productivity, streaming and gaming rather than a system that spends most of its time in Game Mode.
Installation considerations
Start at the current Nobara download page and select the edition matching your hardware and intended use. The project recommends creating installation media with Ventoy and also lists Fedora Media Writer and Rufus in DD mode/GPT as alternatives.
- Choose the desktop, Steam-HTPC, Steam-Handheld or Nvidia edition.
- Download the ISO and use the page’s checksum-verification guidance.
- Create bootable media with Ventoy, Fedora Media Writer or Rufus in the recommended mode.
- Boot the target system in UEFI mode.
- Disable Secure Boot if required by the current installation guidance.
- After installation, complete the first-boot updates, driver steps and gaming checklist.
Nobara is an independent hobby project, not a Fedora or Red Hat product, and its download page provides no-warranty language. That does not make it unsuitable for gaming, but it is a reason to keep recovery media and personal backups.
Who should choose Nobara?
Choose Nobara if you prefer a conventional Linux desktop, want dedicated HTPC or handheld editions, or need a desktop that behaves more like a standard Fedora-based installation. Nvidia users may appreciate an installer with the proprietary driver included, but should still verify current support for their specific GPU and desired Steam interface.

3. ChimeraOS: a console-first living-room appliance
ChimeraOS is an Arch-based operating system built around a console-like PC gaming experience. It boots directly into Steam’s gamepad-focused interface and is intended to be operated primarily with a controller.

Its web app lets you install and manage games from another device. The project documents support for software from Epic Games Store, GOG, Flathub and various retro-console platforms. Updates install complete system images and are designed to happen automatically, although a reboot is required after operating-system updates.
Why ChimeraOS is different
- It goes straight to a controller-first Steam interface.
- A browser-based web app can be used for remote game installation and management.
- It supports selected non-Steam and retro-gaming workflows without requiring a full desktop as the primary interface.
- Its image-based update design aims to reduce routine maintenance.
- It is well suited to a living-room PC that should behave more like a console than a workstation.
The trade-off is deliberate. ChimeraOS’s own FAQ explains that users give up some compatibility and customizability in exchange for a simpler console experience. “Low maintenance” does not mean that every game works, every controller is recognized or hardware failures never require intervention.
Dual-boot and hardware limitations
ChimeraOS does not officially support dual-booting on the same drive because it needs control of the bootloader for its update process. If you need both Windows and Linux, use a separate drive and select the operating system through the motherboard’s boot menu, or choose Bazzite or Nobara after checking their current guidance.
Some hardware can fail to initialize Gamescope or Steam and fall back to GNOME. That fallback is useful for troubleshooting, but it also signals that ChimeraOS may not be the right choice for an unsupported or unusual PC.
Who should choose ChimeraOS?
Choose ChimeraOS if the computer is primarily a living-room console, you want to use a controller almost exclusively, and you prefer automatic image updates over extensive desktop customization.
Avoid it if you need a workstation-like desktop, same-drive dual boot, broad hardware experimentation or maximum control over the underlying Linux system.

Linux gaming compatibility: changing distributions does not remove the ecosystem’s limits
Proton compatibility is game-specific
All three systems rely substantially on Steam’s Linux ecosystem and Proton for Windows games. A game’s compatibility is determined by its engine, launcher, DRM, anti-cheat configuration and current Proton behavior—not simply by the distribution’s name.
Before replacing Windows, check the games you actually play on ProtonDB and in the relevant project’s compatibility documentation. A game that fails because of an unsupported anti-cheat system will generally not become playable merely because you switch from SteamOS to Bazzite, Nobara or ChimeraOS.
Anti-cheat can be the deciding factor
Some multiplayer games remain unavailable or unreliable on Linux because their publishers do not enable compatible anti-cheat configurations. Independent testing has cited Battlefield 6, modern Call of Duty entries, Destiny 2 and EA Sports FC 26 as examples that did not work in the tested Linux setup. Treat that as time-specific testing evidence, not a permanent universal list: verify the current status of every important multiplayer game before installing.
Game Pass is not native Linux PC gaming
Native Xbox PC Game Pass support should not be implied. Independent testing reported that Game Pass was not natively accessible on Bazzite and required cloud gaming or third-party workarounds. This is primarily a Linux ecosystem limitation rather than a Bazzite-only problem.
Non-Steam games use different workflows
| Need | Bazzite | Nobara | ChimeraOS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Epic or GOG | Desktop tools and launcher options; setup varies | Conventional desktop flexibility and manual launcher options | Web-app support for documented third-party-store workflows |
| Emulation | Optional EmuDeck and RetroDECK paths | Normal desktop applications and manual setup | Web-app and retro-platform workflows |
| Launcher troubleshooting | Best handled from desktop mode | Generally easiest in the normal desktop | More limited because the appliance interface is primary |
These are different workflows, not interchangeable guarantees. A controller that works in Steam may not work correctly inside a separate launcher. If necessary, test the launcher through its compatibility layer and add it as a non-Steam game, but do not promise universal controller support.
Installation checklist before replacing Windows
- Back up personal files and game saves.
- Confirm whether the target device uses AMD, Intel or Nvidia graphics.
- Check the project’s current supported-hardware documentation.
- Create a Windows recovery drive or retain the manufacturer’s handheld recovery image.
- Prepare a second USB drive for recovery if the device has limited storage.
- Decide whether you need desktop mode, Game Mode or both.
- Verify your essential games, especially multiplayer titles, before erasing Windows.
- Where possible, test the distribution on a spare SSD or separate drive first.
Replacing an operating system can remove recovery partitions, disrupt vendor utilities and complicate firmware updates. A Linux installation is not risk-free simply because the software is free.
Which one should you install?
- Want the strongest all-round SteamOS-style replacement? Choose Bazzite, particularly on supported AMD handheld or desktop hardware. Use
bazzite-deckwhen you want direct Game Mode booting. - Want a normal Linux desktop with gaming editions? Choose Nobara. It is the better fit for conventional desktop behavior, a dedicated Steam-HTPC or Steam-Handheld image, and users comfortable following first-boot setup steps.
- Want a controller-only living-room appliance? Choose ChimeraOS. Its console-first design and web-based management are more important than desktop customization.
- Need unsupported multiplayer games, native PC Game Pass or Windows-only peripheral software? Keep Windows or dual boot. Confirm the distribution’s current dual-boot guidance, and do not use same-drive dual boot with ChimeraOS.
Final verdict
Bazzite is the most convincing general-purpose alternative to SteamOS because it combines direct Game Mode booting, handheld and HTPC support, a full desktop and image rollback. Nobara is the smarter choice when conventional Fedora-style desktop flexibility matters more than cloning the Steam Deck experience. ChimeraOS is the cleanest choice for a dedicated couch-gaming PC that should behave like a console.
The distribution is only part of the decision. Your GPU, exact handheld model, game library, anti-cheat requirements, need for Game Pass, dual-boot plans and tolerance for troubleshooting matter just as much as the interface.
