Microsoft reported a 61% year-over-year increase in Xbox content and services revenue during fiscal fourth-quarter 2024, with the company attributing 58 percentage points of that increase to its Activision Blizzard acquisition. That is not the same as saying total Xbox revenue or console revenue rose 61%: Xbox hardware revenue fell 42% during the quarter.
The result shows how substantially Activision expanded Microsoft’s gaming-content business while also highlighting Xbox’s growing dependence on software, subscriptions, in-game content and services rather than console sales.
The numbers behind the headline
Microsoft’s fiscal Q4 2024 covered the three months ended June 30, 2024. The company reported its results on July 30, 2024.
| Measure | Year-over-year result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox content and services revenue | Up 61% | The main source of gaming growth |
| Net impact attributed to Activision | 58 percentage points | The dominant reported contributor to that increase |
| Overall gaming revenue | Up 44% | Includes hardware as well as content and services |
| Xbox hardware revenue | Down 42% | Console-related revenue weakened sharply |
Microsoft’s earnings release reported the 61% content-and-services increase and said Activision contributed 58 percentage points of it. Microsoft’s More Personal Computing results reported the broader gaming and hardware figures.

What “Xbox content and services” includes
The 61% figure applies to a specific reporting category, not to every part of Xbox. Microsoft defines Xbox content and services broadly. It includes first-party and third-party game content, in-game content, Xbox Game Pass and other subscriptions, Xbox Cloud Gaming, advertising, third-party disc royalties and other related cloud services.
That means the figure is broader than game sales and broader than Game Pass alone. It also cannot be used as a direct measure of console sales, Xbox unit shipments or total Xbox revenue.
Microsoft places Xbox hardware and Xbox content and services within the broader gaming category. In Q4 FY24, gaming revenue rose 44% overall even though hardware revenue declined 42%. Content and services therefore more than offset the hardware decline.
Why Activision had such a large effect
Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard on October 13, 2023. The year-over-year comparison for Q4 FY24 therefore included a much larger Activision contribution than the comparable quarter a year earlier, when Microsoft did not yet own the publisher.

This is an example of inorganic growth: Microsoft’s consolidated business became larger because it added an acquired company. The acquisition’s reported purchase price was $75.4 billion, primarily in cash, according to Microsoft’s fiscal 2024 Form 10-K.
Microsoft’s 58-percentage-point attribution means Activision supplied the overwhelming majority of the reported increase in Xbox content and services revenue. It does not mean Activision represented 58% of total Xbox revenue, nor does it provide a separately reported Activision revenue or profit figure.
Subtracting 58 points from the 61% increase suggests an approximately three-percentage-point remainder, but that is only a simple implied calculation. Microsoft did not publish a complete standalone figure showing how the pre-existing Xbox business performed without Activision.
Was this mainly a Call of Duty story?
Activision’s portfolio includes major franchises such as Call of Duty, but Microsoft did not break down the 58-point contribution by game, platform, subscription, geography or franchise.

Call of Duty was clearly part of the acquired portfolio, but the available earnings disclosure does not support saying that Call of Duty generated 58% of Xbox’s growth. The contribution also reflects Activision Blizzard’s wider publishing operations, content, in-game spending and other business activity.
The important contradiction: content surged while hardware fell
The quarter’s most revealing detail is the gap between software-and-services growth and hardware performance:
- Xbox content and services revenue rose 61%.
- Overall gaming revenue rose 44%.
- Xbox hardware revenue fell 42%.
Microsoft’s results therefore do not show that Xbox console sales improved. The cited hardware figure is a revenue measure, not a 42% decline in console units. It does, however, show that console-related revenue was substantially weaker while content and services became much larger.
Strategically, the results support Microsoft’s emphasis on game publishing, subscriptions, PC distribution, cloud gaming and in-game monetization. They also expose the trade-off: Microsoft can grow gaming revenue even as its console business weakens, but that growth may become less representative of traditional Xbox hardware momentum.

What the quarter proves—and what it does not
The quarter demonstrates that Activision materially increased the reported scale of Microsoft’s gaming-content business. It does not, by itself, prove that the acquisition has already delivered an adequate return on its $75.4 billion purchase price.
The results do not establish:
- that Microsoft recouped the acquisition cost;
- that operating margins improved by a specific amount;
- that Game Pass subscriptions grew by a specific amount because of Activision;
- that Xbox console demand improved;
- that the pre-existing Xbox business grew organically at a particular rate; or
- that the acquisition’s long-term strategic value has been fully realized.
Revenue growth and investment return are different questions. The 58-point figure is Microsoft’s net impact attribution for revenue growth, not a profitability calculation or payback estimate.
Full-year context
The full fiscal-year results were also strongly affected by Activision, although the percentages were less dramatic than in the June quarter. For the year ended June 30, 2024:
- Gaming revenue increased 39%.
- Xbox content and services revenue increased 50%.
- Microsoft attributed 44 percentage points of the content-and-services increase to Activision Blizzard.
- Xbox hardware revenue decreased 13%.
The full-year figures reinforce the same conclusion: Activision was a major contributor to Microsoft’s gaming expansion, while hardware remained under pressure.

The precise way to describe Microsoft’s result
“Xbox revenue rose 61% thanks to Activision” is understandable as a headline, but it is imprecise. A more accurate description is:
Microsoft reported a 61% year-over-year increase in Xbox content and services revenue in fiscal Q4 2024, attributing 58 percentage points of the increase to the Activision Blizzard acquisition. Overall gaming revenue rose 44%, while Xbox hardware revenue fell 42%.
That wording preserves the important news without implying that consoles, total Xbox revenue or every Xbox business grew at the same rate.
