Work through the fixes below in order, starting with the shortcut, settings, updates, and app repair before changing the registry or reinstalling Windows components.
Try the 60-second fix first
- Restart your Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC.
- Open the game or application you want to record and click inside its window.
- Press Win + Alt + R to start recording.
- Press the same shortcut again to stop.
- Check Videos > Captures, or open
%USERPROFILE%VideosCaptures.
Microsoft documents Xbox Game Bar recording for games and apps on both Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is not necessarily a universal full-desktop recorder, so test a second application if recording fails in only one game.
If the shortcut does nothing, press Win + G. If Game Bar does not open, continue with the enablement steps below.
1. Confirm Xbox Game Bar is enabled
Open Settings, search for Xbox Game Bar, and enable the option that allows Game Bar to open and handle recording features. Microsoft labels this setting Enable Xbox Game Bar; wording can vary slightly between Windows builds.

Restart Windows, open a supported game or app, and test Win + G followed by Win + Alt + R.
Check your edition at Settings > System > About > Windows specifications. The exact Settings layout differs between Windows 10 and Windows 11, so do not assume that every menu path is identical.
2. Update Windows, Microsoft Store, and Game Bar
Install updates before using registry or PowerShell fixes. Microsoft’s Store-app troubleshooting sequence recommends updating Windows and the Store before repairing or reinstalling an app.
Windows 11
Go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.

Windows 10
Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then check for updates.
Next, update Store apps:
- Windows 11: Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates.
- Windows 10: Open Microsoft Store > See more (…) > Downloads and updates > Get updates.
Restart the PC after the updates finish. These paths are based on Microsoft’s Store-app troubleshooting guidance.

3. Repair, then reset Xbox Game Bar
Repair is the least disruptive app-level fix. Reset is more thorough but clears Game Bar’s stored data and preferences.
Windows 11
Depending on your build, use either:
- Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Xbox Game Bar > Advanced options
- Settings > System > System components > Game Bar > Advanced options
Choose Terminate if available, then Repair. Restart Windows and test. If recording still fails, return to the same page and choose Reset.

Windows 10
Go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Xbox Game Bar > Advanced options. Select Repair, restart, and then use Reset if necessary.
Repair attempts to fix the app without removing its data. Reset does not repair Windows itself; it only clears the app’s stored state.
4. Update the graphics driver
Game Bar capture relies on Windows graphics components and the active display adapter. A driver update can resolve compatibility or driver-state problems, although it is not a guaranteed cure.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Note the Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA adapter in use.
- Install an available update through Windows Update or the computer/GPU manufacturer’s official website.
- Restart Windows and test again.
On a laptop with integrated and dedicated graphics, the game and Game Bar may interact with different adapters. Do not assume that changing GPU preferences will fix every system; use dxdiag for more information.

If the error began immediately after a driver update, consider rolling back only after confirming that recent driver change as the likely trigger. Avoid downloading drivers or DLL files from unofficial sites.
5. Check Windows N and graphics compatibility
Windows N editions
If your Windows edition includes the letter N, it omits certain media technologies. Check Settings > System > About > Windows specifications. If it is an N edition, follow Microsoft’s current instructions for installing the Media Feature Pack for your specific Windows version and build.
This is relevant only to Windows N editions, not a general requirement for every PC.
Inspect the active adapter with DxDiag
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
dxdiagand press Enter. - Open each Display tab if more than one exists.
- Note the active GPU and its Driver Model.
Hardware and Windows requirements can change, so do not treat one specific WDDM number as a universal pass/fail rule.
6. Disable competing overlays temporarily
Other overlays and capture tools can interfere with Game Bar on some systems. Temporarily disable:
- NVIDIA or AMD overlays
- Steam and Discord overlays
- OBS or other recording software
- Laptop gaming overlays
- Remote-desktop, screen-recording, or anti-cheat utilities that affect the target game
Close other recording programs, restart Windows, and test Game Bar. If it works, re-enable tools one at a time to identify the conflict. OBS installation is not a proven universal cause, so do not uninstall it automatically.

7. Check capture settings, registry values, and policy

If the capture controls remain disabled despite the Settings toggle, advanced Microsoft Q&A guidance commonly recommends checking these per-user values:

GameDVR_Enabled = 1These are community/Q&A troubleshooting suggestions, not guaranteed official fixes. Before editing:
- Back up the relevant registry key.
- Create a DWORD (32-bit) value if one is missing.
- Use the exact spelling
AppCaptureEnabled, not the frequently repeated typo “AppCatureEnabled.” - Restart Windows afterward.
- Change no unrelated values.
A managed computer may enforce a policy that overrides these user-level settings.
Group Policy
On Windows Pro, Enterprise, and Education, open gpedit.msc and inspect:
Local Computer Policy
> Administrative Templates
> Windows Components
> Windows Game Recording and BroadcastingThe policy wording can vary by build. Windows Home generally does not include the Local Group Policy Editor. Work, school, family-managed, or security-managed PCs may intentionally block recording; do not bypass an organization’s policy without permission.

Use the Microsoft Store first: open Microsoft Store > Library, find Xbox Game Bar, and choose Install if it is available.

If the package is damaged and the normal Store route fails, the following are advanced Microsoft Q&A/community steps. Open PowerShell as administrator only when necessary, and expect settings or related integration to be affected.
Re-register the package

}Remove and reinstall the package
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay | Remove-AppxPackageRestart Windows, then reinstall Xbox Game Bar from Microsoft Store. These commands may behave differently on managed PCs or systems that restrict Store apps. Do not download replacement packages from third-party websites.
9. If recording starts but audio or files are missing
A missing microphone or audio track is different from a failure to create a recording. In Game Bar, open its settings, select Capturing, and choose the All audio option when system audio should be included.
- Win + Alt + M toggles the microphone during recording.
- Recordings normally appear as MP4 files in
VideosCaptures. - Check free disk space and confirm the Captures folder has not been moved.
- Check folder permissions and whether antivirus or Controlled Folder Access blocked the write.
- Stop the recording normally before checking for the file.
Microphone recording may capture private conversations, so check the audio setting before sharing clips.
10. Repair Windows only as a last resort
If app repair, updates, driver troubleshooting, and package repair fail, run an elevated Command Prompt and use:
sfc /scannowThis repairs general Windows system files; it is not a Game Bar-specific cure. On Windows 11, you may also see Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. Read the confirmation screen carefully: this is a Windows repair operation, not simply a Game Bar reinstall.
Contact Microsoft/Xbox Support if the error persists, particularly on a managed PC or one reporting that hardware requirements are not met.
Use another recorder when Game Bar is the wrong tool
If you need unrestricted desktop capture, multiple sources, webcam scenes, streaming, or advanced audio routing, a dedicated recorder may be more suitable. OBS Studio is a free, open-source option, but installing it will not repair Xbox Game Bar and may add another overlay while you are diagnosing the problem.
