api-ms-win-core-memory-l1-1-2.dll is a Microsoft Windows API-set contract name, not necessarily a normal DLL file you can download and copy into a folder. If a program reports that it is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the affected program first, then check Windows compatibility and system components.

The name refers to core memory functions including VirtualFree, VirtualQuery, UnmapViewOfFile, FlushViewOfFile, and CreateFileMappingFromApp. Microsoft documents the contract for Windows 10 build 10.0.10240, with some functions later assigned to other contract versions.

Before fixing the error

Write down these details:

  • The affected program or game
  • Your Windows edition and version
  • The complete error message
  • Whether other programs fail
  • Whether the problem began after a Windows or application update
  • Whether antivirus recently quarantined anything
  • Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit

To check Windows details, open Settings > System > About. To identify a program’s executable, right-click its shortcut, select Open file location, right-click the .exe file, and choose Properties > Details.

If only one program fails, begin with the application repair steps. If several unrelated programs fail, move more quickly to Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected program

Time needed: 5–30 minutes

This is the safest first repair when the error appears only with one application. The application may have an incomplete installation, incompatible bundled files, or a launcher that cannot load its dependencies correctly.

Use the program’s own repair option

Open the application launcher and look for options named Repair, Verify files, Scan and repair, or Verify integrity. Run that process and allow it to replace damaged files.

For a Microsoft Store application:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected application.
  4. Select the three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Advanced options.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Test the program.

If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset if available. Resetting can remove the application’s local settings or cached data.

Reinstall from the publisher

If the program has no repair function:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Select the affected program.
  3. Choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Download the installer from the application’s official publisher.
  6. Install it again.
  7. Start the program normally.

Do not copy api-ms-win-core-memory-l1-1-2.dll from another computer or from an application folder. That can create an architecture mismatch and does not repair the loader or Windows components that resolve API-set contracts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the program still fails after a clean reinstall, check its minimum Windows requirement. An application built for a newer Windows API environment may not run correctly on an older release.

Try administrator and compatibility settings

These settings do not replace a proper repair, but they can reveal a permissions or compatibility problem:

  1. Right-click the program’s shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program as an administrator.
  5. Select Apply, then OK.
  6. Start the program.

If that changes nothing, open Properties > Compatibility > Run compatibility troubleshooter and follow the prompts. Do not select an arbitrary older Windows version simply because it appears in the list. Use the setting only when the publisher recommends it or when the troubleshooter identifies a compatibility problem.

Fix 2: Install Windows updates

Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus restart time

Windows resolves API-set names through its internal API-set schema. An outdated Windows installation may not provide the contract required by newer application binaries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again.
  7. Test the affected application.

If Windows Update itself reports an error, restart first and try again. If updates remain stuck, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.

If the computer runs an old Windows release, upgrading to a supported Windows version may be necessary. DISM and SFC cannot make an application compatible with an operating system that does not meet its minimum requirements.

Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15–45 minutes

Use this step when several programs fail, Windows has recently behaved abnormally, or the problem began after an interrupted update, disk problem, or system migration.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the application again.

DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If it reports that the source files could not be found, fix Windows Update or use a repair source appropriate to your Windows installation rather than downloading an isolated DLL.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test again. If it reports no integrity violations, stop treating this as a missing physical Windows file and investigate the application, its loader, its architecture, and the rest of the error message.

Repeating SFC without understanding what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected program remains the definitive fix when the failure belongs to that application.

For Microsoft’s procedure, see its System File Checker repair instructions.

Fix 4: Check the complete dependency error

Time needed: 5–20 minutes

The visible filename may not be the only problem. Read the entire message and look for another missing file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If it names files such as vcruntime140.dll or msvcp140.dll, install or repair the appropriate package from Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.

Install the architecture required by the application:

  • A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 package.
  • A 64-bit application generally needs the x64 package.
  • A computer running both types of applications may need both packages.

Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable merely because api-ms-win-core-memory-l1-1-2.dll appears in the message. This API-set contract is part of Windows loader behavior, not normally a Visual C++ runtime file.

If the message says a binary is “not designed to run on Windows,” the application file may be corrupt, built for the wrong architecture, or blocked by security software. Reinstall the application from its official source and inspect the complete path shown in the error.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Security software can quarantine an application executable or one of its real dependencies. It does not follow that a file with this exact name should be restored.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Expand any item associated with the affected program.
  6. Confirm that the program came from its legitimate publisher.
  7. Restore or allow the item only when you can verify it is genuine.
  8. If the file looks suspicious, leave it quarantined.
  9. Run a scan and reinstall the application from the publisher.

If restoring an item makes the program start but antivirus immediately quarantines it again, contact the publisher or security vendor. Do not disable protection permanently to force the application to run.

Fix 6: Update drivers only when the symptoms point to them

Time needed: 15–45 minutes

A display, chipset, storage, or virtualization driver can contribute to application startup failures, but a driver update is not the usual direct fix for an API-set contract error. Consider this step when the failure began after a hardware change, driver installation, system migration, or graphics update.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or System devices.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  8. Test the application.

For a known recent driver failure, open the device’s Properties > Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver if the button is available. Otherwise, obtain the driver from the computer or hardware manufacturer’s official support page.

Outbyte Driver Updater can identify outdated drivers with its free scan, while installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and updating drivers will not repair an application packaged for an unsupported Windows version.

Do not change random settings under Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off to solve this error. Enable a Windows feature only when the application publisher specifically requires it. Turning features on does not create a missing API-set contract.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change

Time needed: 20–60 minutes

System Restore is appropriate when the problem began immediately after a driver, Windows update, or application installation and a restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Review the changes.
  8. Select Next, then Finish.
  9. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore affects system files, settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. It will not repair an application that is inherently incompatible with your Windows version.

Why this error happens

The most likely causes are:

  • Application incompatibility: The program expects an API contract that the installed Windows release does not provide in the required form.
  • Damaged Windows components: The component store or related system files are corrupted.
  • Incomplete application installation: A launcher or installer placed incompatible files together.
  • Nonstandard loader behavior: Development tools, compatibility layers, or third-party loaders may not resolve API-set aliases correctly.
  • Antivirus action: A real application dependency was quarantined or blocked.
  • Wrong architecture: A 32-bit program, 64-bit program, or bundled dependency was built for a different environment.
  • A separate runtime error: The complete message identifies a Visual C++ runtime or another dependency in addition to this API-set name.

The api- prefix matters. Microsoft explains that API-set names are virtual aliases resolved by the Windows loader through an API-set schema. A file with the exact name may not exist in System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder.

Do not download or register this name manually

Avoid DLL download sites websites, random ZIP files, and replacements copied from another PC. The file may be malicious, the wrong architecture, the wrong revision, or unrelated to the actual failure. It may also leave the loader problem untouched.

Do not use regsvr32 on api-ms-win-core-memory-l1-1-2.dll. That command is intended for ordinary registration-capable DLLs, such as certain COM or ActiveX components that expose a registration entry point. An API-set contract is not repaired by registering it.

If Windows will not start the program after all repairs

If the issue remains after application reinstall, Windows Update, and DISM/SFC:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the application’s minimum Windows version.
  2. Check whether other applications fail.
  3. Record the full error, including every named dependency.
  4. Check the application’s installation path.
  5. Review Windows Security Protection history.
  6. Test with a clean boot if another service may be interfering.
  7. Contact the application’s publisher with the Windows version, application version, architecture, and complete error text.

If Windows itself will not boot correctly, use Windows Recovery Environment options such as System Restore, Uninstall Updates, Startup Repair, or Reset this PC. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explain which choice fits each situation.

FAQ

Is api-ms-win-core-memory-l1-1-2.dll a real Microsoft file?

It is a real Microsoft API-set contract name. It is not necessarily a standalone file stored on the computer.

Should I copy it into System32?

No. Copying an arbitrary file into System32 or an application folder is unsafe and usually does not fix API-set resolution.

Does a 32-bit program need a special 32-bit copy?

Not in the way DLL download sites sites suggest. Windows and the program’s loader determine how the contract is resolved. Do not download a random “32-bit version.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?

Only install Visual C++ Redistributable when the complete error also names a Visual C++ runtime such as vcruntime140.dll or msvcp140.dll.

Should I run regsvr32?

No. API-set contracts are not repaired by DLL registration.

What information should I provide when asking for support?

Provide the affected program, Windows version and build, complete error text, whether other programs fail, whether antivirus detected anything, and whether the problem started after an update or reinstall.
