swscale-0.dll is missing when an older application cannot find one of its private FFmpeg files. The safest fix is to identify the program requesting swscale-0.dll and repair that complete program, not download a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows, record three details:
- Which program shows the error? Check the title bar, error message, desktop shortcut, or the application you opened immediately beforehand.
- When did it start? Note whether the problem followed an update, antivirus alert, incomplete uninstall, system migration, restore, or copying part of a portable program.
- Is the program 32-bit or 64-bit? Older games, camera utilities, CCTV players, emulators, and custom media tools are often 32-bit even on 64-bit Windows.
Common messages include:
- “This application has failed to start because swscale-0.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because swscale-0.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because swscale-0.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading swscale-0.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “swscale-0.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
swscale-0.dll is an old Windows DLL built from FFmpeg’s libswscale library. That library handles video resizing, colorspace conversion, and pixel-format conversion. The file is not part of Windows and is not supplied by the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application
This is the most likely solution because swscale-0.dll normally belongs beside the application that needs it.
If the program has a repair option
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11 or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the program and choose Advanced options where available.
- Choose Repair.
- Start the application again.
If the program has no repair option, uninstall it and install it again using the developer’s official installer. Restart Windows after the reinstall before testing.

Do not copy only swscale-0.dll into the application folder. Older FFmpeg-based programs often require a matching group of files, including related avcodec, avformat, and avutil DLLs. Reinstalling the complete package restores the set intended for that exact application.
If the application came from a game launcher
Open the launcher and locate the game’s management or settings menu. Choose the option named Verify integrity, Verify files, Repair, or similar. The launcher should compare the installed files and download missing files from its own trusted service.
After verification finishes, restart the launcher and run the game again. If the error remains, uninstall and reinstall the game rather than adding a random DLL manually.
If it is a portable application
A portable program may not appear in Installed apps. Find the folder containing the program’s main .exe file, then check whether swscale-0.dll is in that same folder.
If the file is absent, recopy the entire program directory from the original trusted source. Do not copy just the executable or only ffmpeg.exe. An exported game runtime or portable media player may depend on several private DLLs.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove an old or unusual FFmpeg build, especially when a program was downloaded from an unfamiliar source.
Windows Security steps
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections for the application’s folder.
- Open a detection to see its original path and action.
- If the file clearly belongs to a trusted installation, scan the original installer and confirm that the application came from its developer.
- Restore the file only when you are confident that both the program and the file are legitimate.
- Reinstall the complete application if possible instead of restoring a single file.
Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion simply to make an unknown DLL work. If the file is detected again after a clean reinstall, stop and investigate the detection rather than repeatedly restoring it.
The filename alone does not prove that a file is safe. A suspicious copy in System32, a temporary folder, a browser-download folder, or an unrelated startup directory deserves additional scrutiny. Check its location, publisher information, provenance, and scan result.

Fix 3: Match the application’s architecture and FFmpeg files
A correct-looking filename can still be the wrong file.
The old -0 name is an ABI or build naming convention. Newer FFmpeg builds may use different swscale names, and a current file is not automatically compatible with an older program. Multiple applications can also contain legitimate copies that are not interchangeable.
A mismatch can cause errors such as:
- The file is not designed to run on Windows
- An entry point could not be found
- The application crashes immediately
- The error changes to a different missing FFmpeg DLL
Use the application’s official installer and its matching release. Do not mix swscale-0.dll from one program with avcodec, avformat, or avutil files from another.
To check whether Windows is 64-bit:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Choose About.
- Check System type.
This tells you the Windows architecture, not necessarily the application’s architecture. An application can be 32-bit on 64-bit Windows, and many older programs were built that way. If the vendor offers separate builds, select the build intended for the application and your Windows installation.
Fix 4: Reinstall related camera, CCTV, or media software
swscale-0.dll has appeared with older FFmpeg-based camera utilities, surveillance players, custom video tools, and exported game runtimes.
For a camera program:
- Disconnect the camera if the vendor’s uninstall instructions require it.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the affected camera software and its related driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the currently supported package from the camera or software vendor.
- Install the complete package and restart again.
Older EpocCam and Kinoni packages are a special case. EpocCam has been discontinued, and older Kinoni drivers may need to be removed before installing newer driver components. Do not assume that an old swscale-0.dll copy from an EpocCam installation is suitable for another application.
For CCTV software, reinstall the player or recorder package that produced the error. If several FFmpeg DLLs are missing, that is strong evidence that the application installation is incomplete rather than that Windows needs a single system DLL.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall the application’s drivers
A graphics-driver update normally does not restore an application-private FFmpeg DLL. A camera driver or capture-device package can be relevant when the affected application depends on that hardware software.

- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the device, such as Cameras, Imaging devices, Sound, video and game controllers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
- Record the device name and driver provider.
- Use Update driver only when Windows or the hardware vendor provides a suitable package.
- If the device became unusable after an update, use Roll Back Driver when available.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a clean driver repair, obtain the package from the hardware or application developer. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through many driver versions: its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation through the full version is optional. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the specific application that owns swscale-0.dll.
Fix 6: Check Windows components only after repairing the app
Because swscale-0.dll is normally a third-party application file, System File Checker usually cannot restore it. Use Windows repair commands when other Windows components are also failing, Windows features are corrupted, or several unrelated programs show system errors.
Open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Search for Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft documents DISM and System File Checker for repairing the Windows component store and protected Windows system files.
Restart Windows after both commands complete. Test the application again. If swscale-0.dll is still missing, reinstall the application because SFC is not designed to replace its private FFmpeg files.

Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual checking easier by showing what its free scan finds, while repair through the full version is optional. The definitive fix remains reinstalling the specific game or application that requires swscale-0.dll.
Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. FFmpeg scaler and codec runtime DLLs are normally loaded directly by their application, not registered as COM or ActiveX components.
Running this command is therefore normally irrelevant:
regsvr32 swscale-0.dll
It may produce an error without repairing the application. Microsoft describes Regsvr32 as a registration tool, not as a general missing-DLL repair command.

Do not install a random DLL
Avoid DLL download sites websites and random file attachments. An arbitrary replacement may be:
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- From an incompatible FFmpeg build
- Missing required companion DLLs
- Modified or unsafe
- Placed in the wrong folder
- Unable to fix the dependency that actually failed
The safe source is the official installer for the application that requested the file. If the application is distributed through a game launcher, use that launcher’s repair or verification function. FFmpeg’s project provides source code and links to Windows builds, but it does not provide one universal legacy swscale-0.dll installer for every application.

When to stop troubleshooting
Replace or retire the application when:
- Its developer no longer provides a compatible installer
- It depends on abandoned 32-bit components that fail on your Windows version
- Reinstallation still leaves several missing dependencies
- The installer cannot be verified
- Antivirus repeatedly detects the package
- The vendor has discontinued the product
System Restore is reasonable only when the problem began after a known recent change and no working installer is available. It should not be the first choice for restoring an application-private DLL.
Frequently asked questions
Is swscale-0.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is an older FFmpeg libswscale runtime DLL normally installed beside the application that uses it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhich program installed swscale-0.dll?
There is no universal owner. It has been associated with older games, media tools, camera software, CCTV players, emulators, custom players, Kinovea, and older EpocCam-related packages. The error message and application folder identify the relevant copy.
Can I download swscale-0.dll from Microsoft?
No. It is not a Microsoft system component or Visual C++ Redistributable file. Restore it through the application’s official installer.
Will installing Visual C++ fix the error?
Not normally. Visual C++ is relevant when the message names files such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll. It does not replace an application’s FFmpeg scaler DLL.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
That depends on the application build. Many older copies are 32-bit, but the filename alone does not establish architecture, version, publisher, size, or hash.
Why does the error say the specified module could not be found when the DLL is present?
The named DLL may depend on another missing or incompatible DLL. Repairing the complete application is safer than replacing individual files.
Should I update my graphics driver?
Only if the application or device has a separate driver problem. A normal graphics-driver update will not usually restore swscale-0.dll.
