The 60-second answer
nsmmgr.dll is a third-party file historically associated with NielsenOnline, NetSight, NCP Connect, National Consumer Panel, and related Nielsen audience-measurement software. It is not a normal Windows, DirectX, Visual C++, .NET, or device-driver DLL.
If you no longer use Nielsen panel software:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Nielsen, NCP Connect, National Consumer Panel, NetSight, or NielsenOnline.
- Uninstall the matching program.
- Restart Windows.
- If the message continues, remove the orphaned startup entry with Microsoft Autoruns.
If you still participate in a Nielsen panel, reinstall the complete Nielsen program through your official panel account or contact Nielsen support. Do not download nsmmgr.dll by itself.
Why nsmmgr.dll errors appear
The filename alone cannot identify the exact cause. Windows might be trying to load the file because of one of these conditions:

- Nielsen software was partly uninstalled or updated.
- An automatic startup entry, service, scheduled task, or RunDLL command still points to the deleted file.
- Antivirus software quarantined the DLL.
- The Nielsen installation is damaged or contains mismatched legacy files.
- A counterfeit or malicious file has been placed somewhere unexpected.
- Another dependency required by the Nielsen program is missing.
- Broader Windows corruption is interfering with application startup.
The most common pattern is a Nielsen installation that was removed incompletely. In that situation, the DLL is gone but Windows still launches a command referring to it. This explains why the RunDLL box can return at login or every few minutes.
A path containing SysWOW64 does not prove that nsmmgr.dll belongs to Windows. On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 is used for the 32-bit system-directory view used by 32-bit processes. Do not copy an arbitrary DLL into System32 or SysWOW64.
Fix 1: Uninstall Nielsen software completely
This is the safest fix when you do not need the panel software.
Windows 11 and Windows 10
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11. On some Windows 10 versions, select Apps & features.
- Search for
Nielsen. - Also search separately for:
NCP ConnectNational Consumer PanelNetSightNielsenOnline- Select the matching entry and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart the computer.
If the program does not appear in Settings:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find the Nielsen-related program in Programs and Features.
- Select it, choose Uninstall, and restart Windows.
After restarting, use the computer normally. If the RunDLL message no longer appears, the orphaned reference was part of the Nielsen installation.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not remove unrelated entries merely because their names contain a similar abbreviation. If you are unsure which entry belongs to Nielsen, leave it installed until you can identify it through the program’s publisher, installation folder, or panel support.
Fix 2: Reinstall Nielsen if you still need it
A missing file cannot be reliably repaired by replacing only the DLL. The complete application may also require services, startup configuration, registry entries, and matching dependencies.
- Uninstall the existing Nielsen-related program using the steps above.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to your official Nielsen panel or member account.
- Download the current PC installer supplied for your participation.
- Install it normally.
- Restart again if the installer requests it.
- Launch the Nielsen software or allow its panel service to start.
If no installer is available in your account, contact Nielsen’s help desk. The current Nielsen PC software may not use exactly the same filenames as historical NetSight or NCP Connect releases, so do not assume that a loose copy of nsmmgr.dll is the current component.
If reinstalling removes the message but the program still fails, note the application name and the complete error text. The missing item may be a dependency rather than nsmmgr.dll itself.
Fix 3: Remove a stale startup reference with Autoruns
Use this fix when Nielsen has already been uninstalled or when the pop-up continues after reinstalling.
Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns displays startup locations that Task Manager does not show, including Run entries, services, scheduled tasks, and other automatic launch points.
- Download and open Autoruns from Microsoft Sysinternals.
- Extract the downloaded archive.
- Right-click the version matching your Windows architecture and select Run as administrator.
- Open the Options menu.
- Enable Hide Microsoft Entries and refresh the list.
- Use the search box to look for:
nsmmgrNielsenNetRatingsNielsenOnlineNCP- Inspect each result’s Image Path or command.
- Disable an entry only when it clearly points to a deleted Nielsen installation or an invalid
nsmmgr.dllpath. - Restart Windows.
In Autoruns, disabling an entry is safer than immediately deleting it. If the error disappears and you are certain the entry is orphaned, you can later remove it.
Also inspect Task Scheduler if the pop-up keeps returning:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
taskschd.msc. - Press Enter.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks referring to Nielsen, NetRatings, NCP, or
nsmmgr.dll. - Right-click only a clearly orphaned task and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
If disabling the entry fixes the pop-up, the problem was the launcher rather than a Windows system file. If it does not, re-enable the entry and continue checking other Nielsen-related startup locations.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may have removed the DLL. That does not automatically mean the detection was false or that restoring the file is safe.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
nsmmgr.dllor a Nielsen installation. - Expand the detection to view its location, threat name, and action.
- Confirm that the original path belongs to a genuine Nielsen installation.
- Scan the file and its containing folder before considering restoration.
Restore or allow the file only when you have verified its source, location, signature, and detection details. If Windows Security detects it again immediately, leave it quarantined and contact Nielsen or the security vendor. Do not create an exclusion simply to suppress the warning.
If the file was quarantined from an old Nielsen installation that you no longer use, uninstall that installation instead of restoring the DLL.
Fix 5: Verify the file’s location and architecture
Historical file records associate nsmmgr.dll with paths such as:
C:Program FilesNetRatingsNetSightNetSightnsmmgr.dll
Microsoft Q&A reports have also shown stale references to:
C:WindowsSysWOW64nsmmgr.dll
Neither path alone proves that a file is safe. If a copy exists, right-click it and select Properties.
Check:
- The General tab for the full location.
- The Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- The Details tab for product and publisher information.
- Your antivirus scan result for that exact file.
A copy in a random temporary folder, user profile folder, or unrelated application directory deserves extra scrutiny. Do not replace it with a file from another computer. Historical catalogue records include different legacy builds and a 32-bit record, but these records do not establish a current Nielsen release or a supported standalone download.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 6: Check drivers only when another device problem exists
nsmmgr.dll is associated with application software, not a hardware driver. Updating graphics, chipset, or audio drivers will not normally recreate it.
Check Device Manager only if the same computer also has a device failure:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected device.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Do not install a driver merely because a DLL error appears. If you are manually checking many devices and cannot tell which versions are stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show what needs attention; its full version performs the driver installation. Reinstalling the Nielsen program remains the definitive fix for an nsmmgr.dll application error.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only for broader corruption
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They generally cannot recreate a third-party Nielsen DLL, so use them when Windows has additional problems such as damaged system features, crashes, or multiple built-in tools failing.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
If either command reports that it could not complete, restart and run the commands again from an elevated Command Prompt. If both complete successfully but the nsmmgr.dll message remains, return to the Nielsen uninstall and Autoruns checks.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM will not repair a missing third-party application file. For users who want a guided scan rather than manually comparing repair output, Outbyte PC Repair can show detected issues in its free scan, while repairs require the full version. Reinstalling Nielsen is still the definitive fix when its files are missing.

There is no evidence that enabling a random Windows feature supplies nsmmgr.dll. Do not enable .NET Framework, DirectPlay, or another optional component just because the missing item ends in .dll.
If another message specifically identifies a Windows feature:

- Type

- Review the feature named by the separate error.
- Enable it only when you know the affected application requires it.
- Select OK and restart if prompted.
This step does not replace Nielsen software and is not a normal repair for nsmmgr.dll.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal repair command for every DLL.
There is no public Nielsen instruction showing that nsmmgr.dll should be registered. Running commands such as these can produce another error without restoring the application:
regsvr32 nsmmgr.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSysWOW64nsmmgr.dll
Do not register the file unless an authentic Nielsen installer or Nielsen support explicitly instructs you to do so.

Last resort: clean boot or System Restore
If uninstalling Nielsen does not stop the message:
- Search Windows for System Configuration.
- Open it and select the Services tab.
- Enable Hide all Microsoft services.
- Select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
- Disable clearly third-party startup items.
- Restart and check whether the message returns.
If the error disappears during a clean boot, re-enable items in groups until the Nielsen-related launcher is identified. Restore normal startup afterward.
For an error that began immediately after a software installation or system change, search for Create a restore point, open it, select System Restore, and choose a suitable restore point. System Restore is a fallback, not a replacement for removing an unwanted Nielsen installation.
Is it safe to download nsmmgr.dll?
Avoid generic DLL download sites sites. A downloaded copy may contain malware, use the wrong historical build, target the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, or fail because another Nielsen component is missing. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also create a second broken installation.
Use only the installer provided through your official Nielsen panel account or Nielsen support. If you have an authentic installer or verified backup containing the exact matching file, reinstall the complete product rather than copying the DLL manually.
FAQ
Is nsmmgr.dll a Windows file?
No evidence identifies it as a standard Windows component. It is historically associated with NielsenOnline and related Nielsen panel software. A SysWOW64 path does not change that conclusion.
What installed nsmmgr.dll?
Usually legacy NielsenOnline, NetSight, NCP Connect, National Consumer Panel, or related Nielsen measurement software. The current Nielsen build may use different filenames.
Why does the message appear every few minutes?
A stale RunDLL command, service, scheduled task, or other startup entry may repeatedly attempt to load the removed file. Autoruns and Task Scheduler can expose those references.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not automatically. There is no evidence that these components normally provide nsmmgr.dll. Install a runtime only when the affected application specifically identifies it as a requirement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan SFC restore nsmmgr.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while nsmmgr.dll is a third-party application file. Repair or reinstall the Nielsen software instead.
What if I still use the Nielsen panel?
Do not delete its startup entries or restore quarantined files blindly. Reinstall through the official Nielsen panel account or contact Nielsen support for the current supported package.
