mtp.dll is not established as a standard Windows system DLL, so Windows itself is usually not the right place to repair it. The safest fix is to identify the application requesting mtp.dll, use that application’s repair or file-check function, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer if necessary.
What this file actually does
The name mtp.dll does not identify one confirmed Microsoft component. Microsoft’s documented Media Transfer Protocol stack uses files such as wpdmtp.dll, wpdmtpdr.dll, wpdmtpus.dll, and WpdMtp.inf as part of Windows Portable Devices.

That distinction matters. A phone or camera connection problem involving Windows MTP is not automatically related to a third-party mtp.dll error.
Available public records describe an approximately 1.25 MB, 32-bit mtp.dll record with version 0.0.0.0, but list no verified description, company, or product. Those details do not prove that the file on your computer came from Windows or from any particular publisher.

The strongest public connection is with some regional or private CABAL Online clients. Community reports associate the file with the game’s MShield protection component after launcher updates or damaged patches. That connection is useful for troubleshooting, but the exact publisher, build, signing status, and official package for every mtp.dll copy have not been independently verified.
Treat the file as an application-private DLL unless the program’s developer proves otherwise. It normally belongs beside the application executable or in one of that application’s subfolders, not in C:WindowsSystem32.
What the symptom usually means
| Symptom or timing | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Error starts immediately after a game update | Incomplete or damaged patch | Run the game launcher’s file check |
| Antivirus recently detected or removed the file | Quarantine or deletion | Check Windows Security Protection history |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” appears | Wrong release, architecture, or damaged DLL | Remove the replacement and repair the application |
| Only one game or program fails | Missing application file or dependency | Repair or reinstall that program |
| Several unrelated programs fail | Broader Windows or storage problem | Check Windows components and disk health |
| “Specified module could not be found” appears | mtp.dll or one of its dependencies may be missing |

Fix 1: Identify the program that needs mtp.dll
Do this before downloading or copying anything. The requesting executable and its installation folder tell you which repair process is appropriate.
Read the complete error message
Write down:
- The exact wording of the error
- The executable named in the dialog, if shown
- The application or game you launched
- Whether the message says
mtp.dllis missing, cannot be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows - Whether the problem affects one program or several
A message shown while starting a game normally belongs to that game, even if the filename resembles a Windows component.

- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
If the error appears before the application opens, use the shortcut’s target path or search for the program in File Explorer. Do not assume the file should be in System32.
Also check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit. A 32-bit program can require a 32-bit DLL even on 64-bit Windows. The operating system’s architecture does not automatically determine the architecture of every application file.
Check whether the name is really mtp.dll
Compare the filename carefully with these Microsoft files:
wpdmtp.dllwpdmtpdr.dllwpdmtpus.dll
If the dialog names one of those files, follow Windows Portable Devices and driver troubleshooting instead of treating it as a third-party game DLL.

Fix 2: Run the application’s file check or repair
This is the most likely solution when the error began after an update, failed patch, disk cleanup, or interrupted installation.
- Open the application’s official launcher.
- Look for Verify, Repair, Check Files, File Check, Scan, or a similar command.
- Start the check.
- Allow it to finish completely.
- If the launcher downloads replacement files, let the process complete without closing it.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the program again from its normal shortcut.
For CABAL Online, the official support procedure is to reboot, run the launcher’s file check, wait until it reaches 100 percent, and reinstall the client if the check does not repair the problem.
A successful repair usually means the launcher reports that verification is complete and the program starts without the mtp.dll message. If the launcher repeatedly redownloads the same file, stops before completion, or reports that repair failed, continue to a clean reinstall.
If the launcher has an Run as administrator option, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, approve the User Account Control prompt, and repeat the file check. This can help when the launcher cannot write to its own installation directory.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine or delete a damaged, modified, or falsely detected application DLL. A quarantine event does not prove that the file is safe, so verify its origin before restoring it.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the application stopped launching.
- Expand any entry that names
mtp.dllor the application folder.
If the file came from an official installer and the application vendor confirms that the detection is incorrect, use the available Restore or Allow on device action. Then run the application launcher’s file check so the original file is restored from the vendor’s package.
Do not restore an unknown file merely because its name matches the error. If the file appeared in a temporary folder, a user-download folder, or an unexpected system directory, remove it and reinstall the application from its official source instead.
Microsoft notes that Defender may detect a restored file again. Do not add a broad exclusion for an entire drive or for System32 just to suppress the warning.

Use this step when file checking does not restore mtp.dll, the installation is incomplete, or the launcher repeatedly fails.
- Back up the application’s save files, settings, and screenshots if they are stored outside the cloud.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its menu, choose Uninstall, and complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- If the vendor’s instructions require it, remove the remaining installation folder. Do not delete unrelated folders or shared Windows directories.
- Download the installer from the application developer, game publisher, or official distributor.
- Install the same client or region intended for your account.
- Run its launcher and allow all updates to finish.
- Test the application before adding modifications, unofficial patches, or copied DLLs.
If the program offers both 32-bit and 64-bit builds, install the build that matches the application and its official dependencies. Do not substitute a file from another game server, client release, or computer.
Repeatedly reinstalling without removing a damaged cache or blocked installer may not help. In that situation, review the launcher log, check Protection history again, and contact the application’s official support channel with the full error text and installation path.
Fix 5: Check for a dependency or architecture error
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that mtp.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.
First, restore the exact application package through its launcher or installer. Then check:

- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether antivirus removed another file from the same folder
- Whether the launcher log names a second missing module
- Whether the error appears only with a modified or unofficial executable
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because the missing item ends in .dll. Install a runtime only when the application’s official requirements identify it, or when the error names a runtime component directly.
Update a relevant device driver only when the error is device-related
If the error actually names wpdmtp.dll, occurs when connecting a phone or camera, or appears alongside a Device Manager warning, inspect the device driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or the category associated with the device.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test the device again.
If the problem began after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if the button is available. Do not use this driver path as the default repair for a game that specifically requests mtp.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsManually hunting through many hardware-driver versions is easy to get wrong. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what it found; driver installation through the full version is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when mtp.dll belongs to that program.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when multiple programs fail
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They are not substitutes for reinstalling a third-party application DLL, and they are less likely to help when only one game fails.
Use them when several unrelated Windows programs show errors, Windows features are failing, or other system files are also reported as corrupt.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Try the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If either command reports that it could not complete repairs, restart Windows and repeat the process once. If the application alone still fails, return to its launcher repair or clean reinstall.

Repeatedly running system commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and identify system issues, while repairs require the full version; it is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix for an app-private mtp.dll.
Check Windows Features only when the application requires one
Some older programs require an optional Windows component, but no verified evidence ties mtp.dll itself to a particular Windows Feature.
If the application’s official requirements name a feature:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Enable only the feature identified by the application documentation.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the application.
Do not enable random legacy components as a substitute for identifying the program that installed mtp.dll.

Fix 7: Use System Restore for a recent system-wide change
System Restore is appropriate when the failure began after a Windows update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other system change and several applications are affected.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the results.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system settings, installed programs, and drivers but normally does not remove personal files. It will not reliably restore a missing third-party game file, so run the application launcher’s file check afterward.
Why you should not download mtp.dll separately
Random DLL download sites cannot establish which mtp.dll your application needs. Public records conflict about the file’s size, architecture, hashes, and attribution, and generic database metadata does not prove provenance or safety.
A downloaded replacement may be:
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- From another game server or application release
- Incompatible with the executable’s expected entry points
- Modified or malicious
- Placed in the wrong directory
- Missing its own dependencies
Do not copy mtp.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 by default. Do not use regsvr32 mtp.dll as a generic repair. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration function such as DllRegisterServer; ordinary game-support DLLs generally do not.

FAQ
Is mtp.dll part of Windows?
No verified evidence establishes generic mtp.dll as a standard Windows component. Microsoft’s documented MTP files use the wpdmtp.dll family and related Portable Devices files.
Which application requested mtp.dll?
The error dialog, executable path, shortcut target, and launcher log should identify it. If only one game fails, start with that game’s installation directory and repair tool.
Should I put mtp.dll in System32?
No. If the file is legitimate, it normally belongs in the directory of the application that installed it. Copying it into a system directory can create conflicts and security risks.
Is CABAL Online the only program that uses it?
No universal ownership has been verified. CABAL Online is the strongest publicly reported context, but the file may be requested by another third-party application on your computer.
What if reinstalling changes nothing?
Check Protection history, confirm the full installation path, inspect the launcher log, verify that the correct client architecture is installed, and test after a clean reboot. If the file appeared outside the expected application folder, run a malware scan and contact the application vendor.
Does a missing mtp.dll prove Windows is damaged?
No. A single application failure usually indicates a damaged, incomplete, blocked, or mismatched application installation. Use DISM and SFC when other unrelated Windows components are failing too.
