“The program can’t start because fsusd.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” If fsusd.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, first determine whether Windows or an old application is calling it.
Which fix applies to you
Use this checklist before downloading anything:
- The error appears during Windows startup or affects several programs: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- Only one old application or game shows the error: repair or reinstall that application from its official installer.
- The file was detected or removed by Windows Security: check Protection history before restoring anything.
- The error began after an update, disk cleanup, migration, failed installation, or backup restore: use Windows repair tools or System Restore.
- The message says “not designed to run on Windows” or mentions a bad image: suspect corruption, incompatible architecture, or a missing dependency rather than a registry problem.
- The application is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows: do not copy a random DLL into both system folders. The application and Windows release must receive a compatible file.
What fsusd.dll is
fsusd.dll is identified in historical Windows file inventories as a Microsoft component named “File System Camera Devices DLL.” Historical Windows XP build information lists it as a Windows file, and an older system-file inventory places it under C:WindowsSystem32.Microsoft-associated file inventory
That evidence does not establish that the same file ships in every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation. It also does not show a current standalone Microsoft download or a separate Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime package.
The practical distinction is important: an application may be looking for a legacy Windows component even when the current operating system does not expose that exact file in the same way. Alternatively, Windows may have a damaged or deleted protected file. Repair the source of the error instead of substituting an old copy.

What the error messages mean
You may see any of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because fsusd.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting fsusd.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading fsusd.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because fsusd.dll was not found.”
- “fsusd.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that fsusd.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency that the DLL needs. A “not designed to run on Windows” message commonly points to a damaged file, wrong architecture, incompatible version, or dependency mismatch.
Fix 1: Repair Windows components first
This is the safest first repair when the error affects Windows itself, several applications, or a recently changed installation.
Install updates and restart
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update process does not specifically request it.
Then test the application again. If the message remains, repair the component store and protected files.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. It may pause at a percentage for some time.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart the computer when both commands finish.
- Open the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the source that SFC uses to replace damaged protected files.Microsoft’s SFC and DISM procedure
Repeating these commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows what it identifies, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and Windows’ built-in DISM and SFC remain the appropriate first-line tools.
If SFC cannot repair the file
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not fix some of them:
- Keep Command Prompt open as administrator.
- Export the relevant entries from the CBS log:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
- Open the
sfcdetails.txtfile on your desktop. - Note whether
fsusd.dllis listed and whether the failure concerns a different dependency. - Run Windows Update again and restart.
- If the problem continues, use a matching Windows installation or repair source with DISM.
A repair source must match the installed Windows edition, language, and architecture. The syntax is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a valid matching source. Do not use a random Windows folder or an extracted DLL as the source.Microsoft’s DISM repair-source guidance

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the application calling the file
If only one program displays the error, the application is the more likely repair target. This is especially true for older software that expects a legacy Windows file or was installed incompletely.
Try Windows’ application repair option
For a Microsoft Store application or a supported desktop program:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Repair normally preserves the application’s data. If it fails, return to the same screen and select Reset, but understand that Reset can remove application settings or locally stored data.Microsoft application repair instructions
For a traditional desktop program without an Advanced options entry:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart and test the program.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer or the store from which you originally obtained it. Do not copy fsusd.dll beside the program’s executable unless the application developer explicitly supplies that exact file and version.
If the program is old, check whether its developer provides a current Windows-compatible release. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a verified fix for fsusd.dll itself. Install one of those runtimes only when the application’s own documentation identifies it as a missing dependency.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a file after a detection. Quarantine alone does not prove that the file was malicious, and it does not prove that restoring it is safe.

- Expand the event associated with the application or DLL.
- Read the detection name, original path, date, and action.
- If the file came from an official Windows installation and its signature can be verified, assess the detection before taking action.
- If the file was inside an untrusted application folder, leave it quarantined and scan the computer.

Fix 4: Check architecture and file locations
On 64-bit Windows, 64-bit system DLLs normally belong in:
%WINDIR%System32
32-bit system DLLs are redirected to:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64
This naming is unintuitive: System32 is the normal location for 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.Microsoft file-system redirector documentation
A historical public record identifies at least one 32-bit fsusd.dll build, but that does not make it a correct replacement for modern Windows. Do not place one downloaded file into both folders, and do not replace a system file manually.

If it appears in a 64-bit process, an old 32-bit file is not a valid substitute. The correct repair depends on the Windows release and the process requesting the DLL.
Fix 5: Update camera and chipset drivers only when Device Manager identifies a problem
fsusd.dll is not established as a generic camera driver, so do not install drivers merely because the description mentions camera devices. Check Device Manager only if the error coincides with a camera, imaging, or hardware failure.

For a laptop, use the device manufacturer’s official support page if Windows cannot find a driver. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what it finds; the free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is performed by the full version, and it is not required to repair fsusd.dll.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent system change
If the error began immediately after an update, failed installation, cleanup operation, migration, or restoration from an old backup, System Restore may undo the change.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point and select Finish.

If DISM, SFC, updates, and application repair do not resolve a system-wide problem, use a repair reinstall rather than manually replacing the DLL.

- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.

Why regsvr32 fsusd.dll is usually wrong
regsvr32 is a registration utility for DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point. It is not a general command for restoring missing or corrupted Windows files.Microsoft regsvr32 documentation
There is no verified evidence that fsusd.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. Running:

regsvr32 fsusd.dll
is therefore unlikely to fix this error and may return an “entry point not found” message. Use DISM, SFC, or the affected program’s installer instead.
Do not download a replacement DLL
Random DLL download pages can provide malware, the wrong Windows-era version, or the wrong architecture. A copied file may fail because its dependencies are also missing, and placing it beside an executable can create a separate loading or security problem.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Microsoft’s built-in repair tools, a matching Microsoft installation source, and the official installer for the application that reports the error.
FAQ
Is fsusd.dll malware?
The name is associated with a historical Microsoft Windows component. A file with that name should still be verified by its path, signature, and security scan. Do not assume that every copy is genuine.
Does fsusd.dll belong in System32 or SysWOW64?
Historical inventories place it in System32. On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 is used for 32-bit system files. Do not copy the same file into both directories.
Does Windows 10 or Windows 11 include fsusd.dll?
Authoritative public evidence does not confirm its exact presence in every Windows 10 or Windows 11 release. Treat an application’s request for it as a diagnostic clue, not proof that a standalone download is required.
Recommended Free Tools
Will reinstalling the application fix it?
If only one old application reports the error, repairing or reinstalling that application is often the definitive fix. If multiple programs fail, repair Windows first.
What if DISM and SFC succeed but the error remains?
Identify the calling executable from the error details, application logs, or Event Viewer. If only one program calls the file, repair or replace that program rather than repeatedly running system scans.
What information should I provide when asking for help?
Record your Windows version, the complete error text, the affected executable, when the error began, whether Windows Security quarantined anything, and whether fsusd.dll exists under %WINDIR%System32.
