dshellgenerichook.dll: Remove the Legacy Startup Request

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

dshellgenerichook.dll is not an identified Windows system file. If Windows reports that dshellgenerichook.dll is missing, the safest fix is usually to remove the old program or startup entry still requesting it, not to download a replacement DLL.

Historical reports connect this warning with old iMesh-related software and leftover components such as createsw.exe, driverpg.exe, and FTP_back.exe. That association is useful for troubleshooting, but it does not prove who originally authored the DLL.

Fix 1: Remove the program that requested the DLL

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Start with the application installed or removed immediately before the warning appeared. On current Windows, this is often an obsolete application with an incomplete uninstall rather than a missing Microsoft component.

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Sort the list by Install date.
  5. Look for iMesh or another unfamiliar program installed around the time the warning began.
  6. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  7. Choose Uninstall, then follow the prompts.
  8. Restart Windows.

If the program is not listed, check the old Control Panel list:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Uninstall the matching application if it appears.

Do not reinstall iMesh or an unknown legacy application merely to restore dshellgenerichook.dll. If you genuinely still need the original program, obtain its installer only from the publisher or a trustworthy archive associated with that publisher. Reinstalling the original program remains the definitive repair for an application that legitimately depends on its own files.

Check startup apps

If the error appears during sign-in, the application may already be gone while its startup command remains.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Disable only entries clearly connected with the removed software.
  4. Look for names related to iMesh, createsw.exe, driverpg.exe, FTP_back.exe, or an unknown command that references dshellgenerichook.dll.
  5. Restart Windows.

Do not delete a file solely because an old report names it. Before removing createsw.exe, driverpg.exe, or another executable, check its full path, digital signature, parent application, and antivirus results.

Fix 2: Remove an orphaned startup command

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

A leftover Run entry is one of the most likely causes when the warning appears before the desktop finishes loading.

Check Task Scheduler

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type taskschd.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  5. Review tasks whose names or actions refer to the removed application, dshellgenerichook.dll, or one of the suspicious legacy executables.
  6. Double-click a task and inspect the Actions tab.
  7. Disable or delete it only when its path clearly belongs to unwanted leftover software.

Check the Startup folders

Press Windows + R, enter each path separately, and remove only shortcuts that clearly belong to the uninstalled program:

shell:startup
shell:common startup

Search the registry carefully

Registry changes can stop Windows from loading a program, so export a key before editing it.

  5. Select Computer at the top of the left pane.
  6. Choose File > Export.
  7. Save a complete backup somewhere safe.
  8. Press Ctrl + F.
  9. Search for dshellgenerichook.dll.
  10. Press F3 to find additional matches.

Pay particular attention to startup locations such as:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun

On 64-bit Windows, also check the corresponding registry entries used by 32-bit applications. Delete only a value that is clearly an orphaned command for software you intentionally removed. Do not delete an entire Run key or unrelated registry entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart Windows and check whether the warning returns. If it does, use Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns to locate startup entries that Task Manager does not display. Review each entry before disabling it.

Fix 3: Scan for unwanted software

Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours

Old peer-to-peer installers and their bundled components were associated with unwanted software. A missing DLL warning does not prove that every copy of dshellgenerichook.dll is malware, but unexplained startup behavior should be scanned.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Scan options.
  4. Select Full scan.
  5. Select Scan now.
  6. When the scan finishes, open Protection history.
  7. Review detections and quarantine actions.
  8. Do not restore a quarantined file simply because another program says a DLL is missing.

For a persistent warning, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Scan options.
  4. Select Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
  5. Choose Scan now and save open work first.

The computer will restart and scan before normal Windows startup. If browser changes, pop-ups, unexplained processes, or repeated file recreation accompany the DLL warning, treat the problem as a possible security incident rather than a simple missing-file error.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged

Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus restart time

dshellgenerichook.dll has not been identified as a protected Windows component. Therefore, System File Checker is unlikely to restore it. Use these commands when Windows has broader problems such as damaged system features, failed updates, or multiple built-in errors.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Terminal.
  3. Right-click Windows Terminal.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired protected files, test Windows again. If both commands complete without finding a problem, return to the startup and application checks above instead of repeating them.

When manually comparing component versions and repeating DISM or SFC becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the program that owns this DLL remains the definitive fix.

Fix 5: Check legacy Windows features only if the application requires them

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Some old applications require a Windows compatibility feature, but enabling one will not recreate an unidentified third-party DLL.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Review features such as .NET Framework or Legacy Components.
  5. Enable a feature only when the original application’s documentation specifically requires it.
  6. Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.

Do not enable every listed feature as a general DLL repair. The feature list is not a source for dshellgenerichook.dll.

Fix 6: Check drivers only when the failure points to hardware

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

There is no verified evidence that dshellgenerichook.dll is a graphics, audio, storage, or other hardware driver file. Driver repair is therefore a lower-probability step. Consider it only if the same application also reports display, audio, device, or hardware initialization errors.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the application failure.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab and record the provider and date.
  7. Select Update driver.
  8. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  9. Restart Windows.

For graphics hardware, install the latest driver from the computer or graphics-card manufacturer’s official support page. Avoid replacing a DLL independently of the driver package.

When hunting through many device entries and comparing driver versions becomes impractical, Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies; driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional, and it will not replace the original application that supplied dshellgenerichook.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Use System Restore if the warning began after a software change

Time needed: 20–45 minutes

System Restore can undo a recent installation or startup change when a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Choose Next.
  5. Select a restore point created before the warning began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Confirm the restore point.
  8. Save work and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore may remove an unwanted startup entry, but it is not guaranteed to restore a third-party DLL. Afterward, run a security scan and verify installed applications again.

Do not download dshellgenerichook.dll

Unauthenticated DLL repositories list conflicting metadata for this filename. Their reported size, version, publisher, architecture, and compatibility information is not verified by Microsoft or an identified original vendor.

Copying a downloaded DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 can introduce malware, create an architecture mismatch, or allow a malicious DLL search-order hijack. System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. That distinction does not make an unknown download safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a file with this name is already present, record its full path, SHA-256 hash, digital signature, and invoking process before deleting it. If antivirus quarantined it, inspect Protection history and verify the original publisher before considering any restoration.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply

There is no reliable evidence that dshellgenerichook.dll is an ActiveX or COM in-process server that exports DllRegisterServer. Running regsvr32 is therefore not a first-line fix and may produce another error without repairing the startup request.

Most likely causes

Cause Best response
Orphaned iMesh-era startup entry Remove the confirmed Run, Startup-folder, or scheduled-task reference
Bundled adware or potentially unwanted software Run Full scan and Defender Offline scan

Frequently asked questions

Is dshellgenerichook.dll part of Windows?

No trustworthy Microsoft catalogue or official Windows documentation identifies it as a Windows component, Microsoft runtime, DirectX file, or driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it definitely an iMesh file?

No. Historical reports repeatedly associate the warning with iMesh-related remnants, but the exact DLL publisher and original binary provenance remain unverified.

Should I put it in System32?

No. Do not copy an unauthenticated DLL into System32 or SysWOW64.

Should I delete createsw.exe or driverpg.exe?

Not automatically. Confirm the file’s location, signature, parent software, and antivirus findings first. Remove it only when it is a verified unwanted remnant.

Why does SFC not fix the warning?

SFC repairs protected Windows files. There is no evidence that dshellgenerichook.dll is one of them, so the startup reference or original application must usually be repaired instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the message still appears after uninstalling the app?

Check Task Manager startup apps, both Startup folders, Task Scheduler, and the registry for the exact filename. Autoruns can help locate entries hidden from the normal Windows interfaces. Restart after removing only confirmed remnants.
