maxnetbackburner.dll is an Autodesk file used by the Backburner client library for 3ds Max network rendering. It is not a Windows system DLL, so downloading it into System32 is not the correct repair.
The safest fix is to repair the Autodesk product that displayed the error, then reinstall the matching Backburner component if repair does not restore the file.

Backburner manages network or batch rendering. It is not normally required for opening 3ds Max for ordinary interactive modeling or local work. If you only use local rendering, the error may indicate that the installation is incomplete or that another Autodesk component is trying to load Backburner unnecessarily.

That determines which installation must be repaired.
Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk installation
Start with Windows’ installed-app repair option. This preserves the existing installation when the installer supports repair.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Autodesk 3ds Max, Backburner, or the Autodesk product shown in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the product.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on the available options.
- If the Autodesk installer opens, choose Repair.
- Allow the operation to finish, then restart Windows.
- Launch the same Autodesk application again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Apps & features.
- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Choose Modify if available.
- In the Autodesk maintenance window, choose Repair.
- Restart Windows when it completes.
- Test 3ds Max or the Backburner program again.
The wording varies between Autodesk releases. If there is no Repair button, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the Autodesk product, and choose Change.
If the repair reports missing source files, fails immediately, or the DLL error returns, use the official Autodesk installer from your Autodesk account. Run the installer by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
For 3ds Max 2019 and newer, install the Backburner package intended for the installed 3ds Max release through Autodesk’s official distribution channel. For 3ds Max 2018 and earlier, use the matching complete 3ds Max installation media rather than mixing a newer Backburner package with an older product.

The exact installation path can differ. Do not create a replacement DLL in that folder manually. The installer must place the file together with its related libraries and configuration.
Fix 2: Reinstall Backburner when repair fails
A failed installation often leaves several Autodesk DLLs missing. If maxnetbackburner.dll is missing along with other Autodesk files, treat the problem as one failed installation rather than a list of separate DLL errors.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove the Backburner version associated with the failed installation.
- Remove the affected Autodesk product only if its repair option failed or the Autodesk installer recommends a complete reinstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to your Autodesk account and download the installer for the exact product and release.
- For newer 3ds Max releases, install the compatible standalone Backburner package.
- For older releases, run the matching 3ds Max installer.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Restart again and test the application.
Do not keep multiple incompatible Backburner versions installed when changing releases. A newer installation can overwrite files used by an older one. If you are reverting to an older Autodesk product, remove the incompatible Backburner version first.
If the installer repeatedly fails, clear only documented Autodesk temporary installer data and temporary Windows installer files. Do not delete project scenes, textures, licensing data, or custom configuration files without instructions for your specific Autodesk release.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a file during installation or after an update. Check this before downloading anything.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the Autodesk installation or error occurred.
- Expand an entry that mentions
maxnetbackburner.dllor an Autodesk installer. - Confirm that the file came from an official Autodesk installer and that its path belongs to the Autodesk installation.
- If the provenance and digital signature are verified, use Restore or Allow on device only when Windows Security presents that option.
- Re-run the Autodesk repair or installation afterward.

Do not permanently disable antivirus protection or add a broad exclusion for the entire Program Files directory. If the file is quarantined repeatedly, verify the installer source and submit the detection to the security vendor for review.
Fix 4: Check whether the file is present but cannot load
A “specified module could not be found” message does not always mean that maxnetbackburner.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency that the DLL needs.
Check the expected Autodesk directory rather than searching only System32:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the Backburner installation directory.
- Search for
maxnetbackburner.dll. - If it is absent, repair or reinstall Autodesk.
- If it is present, right-click it, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab if available.
- Use the Details tab to check the path and file information.
- Compare the file’s location with the Autodesk installation that is actually launching.
A file in an arbitrary download directory, C:WindowsSystem32, or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is not evidence that the Autodesk installation is healthy.

A 64-bit 3ds Max installation needs the matching 64-bit Autodesk components, while a 32-bit application needs compatible 32-bit components. The filename alone does not establish the architecture, version, authenticity, or compatibility of a particular copy. Reinstalling the complete matching Autodesk product is safer than trying to replace one file.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Because this is an Autodesk DLL, Windows repair tools normally will not restore it. They are useful when Windows is also showing broader problems, such as failed system updates or damaged built-in applications.

- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the Autodesk application.
Microsoft documents these commands in its guide to repairing a Windows image. They repair Windows components and protected Windows files, not a missing Autodesk DLL. If the commands complete successfully but the error remains, return to the Autodesk repair or reinstall.

Fix 6: Consider a driver change only when the timing fits
maxnetbackburner.dll is an application file, not a graphics driver file. Updating a driver is not the primary repair. Consider it only if the error began immediately after a Windows migration, graphics-driver change, or rendering-device problem and the Autodesk installation itself passes repair.
To inspect the graphics driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
- If the problem began after an update, select Roll Back Driver when available.
- Otherwise, use the graphics hardware manufacturer’s official driver package.
- Restart Windows and retest Autodesk.
Do not remove an unknown device or install a driver solely because a DLL error mentions rendering. System Restore can help when the error began directly after a failed Autodesk update, cleanup utility, or other installation and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs, but it is not a substitute for reinstalling Autodesk. Microsoft describes this process in its point-in-time restore documentation.

Do not download the DLL from a random website
An isolated download can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a file with missing dependencies. It can also overwrite a valid vendor file and leave the underlying Autodesk installation broken.
Use the official Autodesk installer, Autodesk account, or official Autodesk Backburner distribution for the product and release you have installed.

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
maxnetbackburner.dll is not a Windows system DLL. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 does not repair the Autodesk application and can create path or architecture conflicts.
Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not download missing files, restore dependencies, or repair an Autodesk installation. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference.

Do not trust filename-only version claims
The filename does not prove that a copy is genuine. Verify the installation path, digital signature, and relationship to the installed Autodesk release. There is no authoritative public Autodesk version and hash table for this DLL that makes an arbitrary downloaded copy safe.
