The code execution cannot proceed because maxlinkn.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
You may also see a message saying that maxlinkn.dll is not designed to run on Windows or contains an error.
The 60-second answer
maxlinkn.dll is associated with the legacy PaperPort API Services Library from Visioneer. It is an application DLL, not a normal Windows component and not a Visual C++ Redistributable file.
The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the exact PaperPort edition that originally installed it. Use the original PaperPort installer, licensed distributor, or scanner manufacturer’s PaperPort package. Do not begin by downloading a loose copy of maxlinkn.dll or copying it to System32.

Replacing maxlinkn.dll alone will not correct that problem.
What maxlinkn.dll belongs to
maxlinkn.dll is described in file inventories as the PaperPort API Services Library. It is a legacy component associated with Visioneer PaperPort and may be found in older PaperPort installations or PaperPort packages bundled with scanners, printers, and multifunction devices.
PaperPort has appeared under Visioneer, ScanSoft, Nuance, Kofax, and Tungsten branding. The branding on your installer may therefore differ from the name shown in the error.
The PaperPort association is strongly supported by independent file records, but no current public vendor page specifically documents this filename as a maintained component. Treat archive-reported details such as an older 32-bit build, a reported version, or a historical file size as identification clues rather than proof that every copy should match them.
This file is not identified as:
- A Windows system DLL
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file
- A DirectX component
- A .NET component
- A standard scanner driver
- A file that normally belongs in
C:WindowsSystem32
Windows can run a 32-bit PaperPort installation on 64-bit Windows. That does not mean the DLL should be moved between System32 and SysWOW64.

Why PaperPort reports the error
The usual causes are:

A damaged or incomplete PaperPort installation
A failed update, partial uninstall, or interrupted setup may remove the file while leaving shortcuts and registry entries behind. -
Antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove an old application file, especially if the file is unusual, unsigned, or located in an unexpected directory. -
A failed PaperPort upgrade

A missing dependency
Windows may saymaxlinkn.dllis missing when the named file exists but one of the DLLs it needs does not. -
A version or architecture mismatch
A file from a different PaperPort release may not work with the installed executable. A 32-bit application also needs compatible 32-bit dependencies. -
Windows component corruption
This is possible, but less likely becausemaxlinkn.dllis an application file rather than a protected Windows component. -
A suspicious or tampered file

Fix 1: Identify the PaperPort installation first
Before changing files, find which program is requesting maxlinkn.dll.
- Read the full error window and note the executable name, if shown.
- Open File Explorer.
- Search these locations for
maxlinkn.dll: - The PaperPort installation folder
- The scanner manufacturer’s program folder
C:Program FilesC:Program Files (x86)- Right-click any matching file and select Properties.
- Check the Location, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs.
- Note whether the path belongs to PaperPort or to a scanner bundle.
The file should normally remain beside the application that uses it. Microsoft’s DLL search order guidance explains why Windows commonly searches an application’s own directory. Its DLL redirection guidance also explains why moving application DLLs into system folders is a poor repair method.

If the error names a different executable, repair that associated program rather than assuming every maxlinkn.dll copy belongs to the same PaperPort installation.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
A quarantined file should not be restored blindly.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
maxlinkn.dllor the PaperPort installation folder. - Open the detection to view its path and details.
- Do not select Restore or Allow on device until you have confirmed that:
- The path belongs to your legitimate PaperPort installation.
- PaperPort came from trusted installation media.
- The file is associated with the correct application and edition.
- The system has a current security scan.
Microsoft warns that restoring a detected file can expose the computer if the detection is genuine. See the official Protection History guidance.

If the file was removed from a legitimate PaperPort folder, reinstalling PaperPort is safer than restoring an isolated DLL. The installer can restore the complete set of files and dependencies.
Fix 3: Repair PaperPort from Installed apps
Use Windows’ repair option when it is available.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for PaperPort.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the correct edition.
- Choose Advanced options, Modify, or Repair, depending on what appears.
- Follow the PaperPort setup wizard.
- Restart Windows after the repair finishes.
- Launch PaperPort again.
Some older installers do not expose a Windows repair button. In that case, open Control Panel, select Programs and Features, right-click PaperPort, and choose Change or Repair if offered.
If repair succeeds, the program should start without the missing-DLL message. If the error remains, continue with a clean reinstall rather than copying a replacement file.
Fix 4: Reinstall the exact PaperPort edition
This is the most reliable fix for a missing or damaged maxlinkn.dll.
Before uninstalling, back up your PaperPort documents, custom scan profiles, and any configured folders.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall PaperPort and any related PaperPort installation component.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the installer from the original PaperPort media, a licensed PaperPort distributor, or the scanner manufacturer that bundled PaperPort.
- If the scanner supplied PaperPort, use the package intended for that exact scanner model and Windows version.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test PaperPort and scanning.
Do not install a generic PaperPort edition when the scanner manufacturer supplied a device-specific package. The generic edition may not include the scanner integration or related components required by the original installation.
Historical PaperPort installers may still be available through former vendor support channels, but verify licensing and compatibility before using them. An older PaperPort release may install successfully yet remain incompatible with a current Windows version.

Fix 5: Investigate a missing dependency
If maxlinkn.dll exists in the correct PaperPort folder but the error says “the specified module could not be found,” the missing item may be a dependency.
Use this sequence:
- Confirm that the file is inside the PaperPort installation directory.
- Check whether the error names a particular executable.
- Repair or reinstall PaperPort and its scanner components together.
- Install any runtime explicitly requested by the PaperPort installer or the complete error message.
- Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because the failing file ends in
.dll.
A dependency-analysis utility can identify which library cannot be loaded, but use one from a reputable source and examine the result carefully. The fix is usually to reinstall the application component that supplied the dependency.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows itself appears damaged or when several unrelated programs report missing system files. They are secondary for maxlinkn.dll and are unlikely to recreate a third-party PaperPort file.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test PaperPort.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The official System File Checker instructions explain the possible completion messages.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, retest PaperPort. If both commands complete without resolving the error, return to PaperPort repair or reinstall. Repeating them will not normally restore an application DLL that the PaperPort installer failed to provide.

Fix 7: Check scanner software and drivers
If PaperPort opens but fails when scanning, or the error began after a scanner change, reinstall the scanner package as well as PaperPort.
- Disconnect the scanner if it is connected by USB.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Remove old scanner utilities and PaperPort components associated with the device.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the scanner and select Uninstall device if it is still listed.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the scanner manufacturer’s package for the exact model and Windows edition.
- Install the matching PaperPort bundle if the scanner originally included one.
- Reconnect the scanner and test a scan.
Do not use Device Manager to replace maxlinkn.dll. Device Manager manages hardware drivers, not ordinary PaperPort application libraries.
Finding the correct scanner model, operating system build, and driver package can involve checking many manufacturer downloads. Do not copy maxlinkn.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 just because an error names a DLL.
That can cause:
- A wrong version to load before the correct application copy
- 32-bit and 64-bit architecture conflicts
- Conflicts with another application
- Persistent errors because dependent files are still absent
- A security problem if the copied file is untrusted
regsvr32 usually does not apply either. It is intended for self-registering COM and ActiveX libraries that export a registration entry point. There is no verified evidence that maxlinkn.dll is such a library. Running regsvr32 maxlinkn.dll may produce a registration or entry-point error and will not repair a damaged PaperPort installation.

Use System Restore for a recent change
System Restore can help if the failure began immediately after an application installation, update, driver change, or migration.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the PaperPort error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.

What to record if reinstalling fails
Collect these details before contacting PaperPort or the scanner manufacturer:
- The complete error text
- The executable named in the error
- The full path of any
maxlinkn.dllcopy - The PaperPort edition and installer source
- The Windows 10 or Windows 11 version
- Whether Windows Security quarantined the file
- Whether the file exists after reinstalling
- Whether PaperPort opens but scanning fails
- Whether the scanner was recently replaced or updated
If the file exists in the correct directory and the same error persists, the next step is dependency analysis or compatibility troubleshooting. An obsolete PaperPort edition may not function correctly on the current Windows release even after its files are restored.
