Which fix applies to you
Use the description that matches what you see:
- The file is under a Firefox profile: Refresh, repair, or replace that Firefox profile.
- The error appears when opening an old Firefox installation: Upgrade Firefox or create a clean profile.
- The error appeared after antivirus activity: Check quarantine before restoring anything.
- The dialog appears when Windows starts, but Firefox does not open: Find the stale startup item, shortcut, scheduled task, or backup utility calling Firefox.
- The file is in
System32orSysWOW64: Do not replace it manually. Identify the program that placed it there and scan the file. - The message names another application: Repair that application first. The filename alone does not prove Firefox is the caller.
- Windows has several unrelated corruption symptoms: Run DISM and SFC after addressing the Firefox or application problem.
What eme-adobe.dll was
eme-adobe.dll was part of Mozilla Firefox’s old Adobe Primetime Content Decryption Module, also called the Primetime GMP Plugin. Firefox used it for protected HTML5 audio and video on older Windows releases.
It was downloaded by Firefox when a website required the DRM component and stored inside the user profile rather than in a Windows system directory. A typical historical location looked like this:
%APPDATA%MozillaFirefoxProfiles<profile>gmp-eme-adobe17eme-adobe.dll
The same folder could contain:
eme-adobe.info
eme-adobe.voucher
This explains why the error may mention a file that is not in C:WindowsSystem32.

The component was used by Firefox 51 and earlier Windows builds. Mozilla disabled Adobe EME in Firefox 52. Current Firefox uses Google Widevine for supported desktop DRM, so a current installation normally does not need Adobe Primetime.
The file is not part of Windows, DirectX, a graphics driver, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Reader, or Flash Player. Historical file records describe it as a 32-bit Adobe Primetime module, but there is no verified current standalone Adobe download for safely replacing it.
Fix 1: Update or reinstall Firefox
For most users, this is the correct fix. Do not begin by downloading the DLL.
If Firefox opens
- Open Firefox.
- Select the menu button.
- Select Help.
- Select About Firefox.
- Allow Firefox to check for updates.
- Restart Firefox when prompted.
- Test the site or application that produced the error.
If the error remains:
- Close every Firefox window.
- Open Settings in Windows.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find Firefox.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it and choose Uninstall.
- Download Firefox again from Mozilla’s official Firefox website.
- Install the current release.
- Test Firefox before copying an old profile back.
Keep a backup of the old profile before uninstalling or deleting anything. A legacy profile can contain bookmarks and other personal data, but copying the entire old profile back may also restore the broken reference.

Try Firefox Troubleshoot Mode:
- Hold Shift while starting Firefox.
- When the Firefox Troubleshoot Mode window appears, select Open.
- If Firefox starts, open Help > More Troubleshooting Information.
- Select Refresh Firefox.
- Confirm the refresh and restart Firefox normally.
If Firefox cannot reach Troubleshoot Mode, install a current Firefox release and create a new profile instead of restoring the old one immediately.
How to tell whether it worked
The repair worked if Firefox starts without the dialog and the affected website no longer requests the old Adobe component. If the error returns only after restoring the old profile, that profile is the likely source.
Fix 2: Refresh Firefox or create a clean profile
A broken or copied profile is especially likely when the error began after restoring a backup, moving Firefox to another computer, or upgrading an old installation.
Refresh the profile
- Open Firefox.
- Select the menu button.
- Select Help > More Troubleshooting Information.
- Select Refresh Firefox.
- Confirm the operation.
- Restart Firefox and test it.
Refresh preserves important personal information such as bookmarks, browsing history, saved passwords, cookies, and autofill data. It removes extensions, themes, modified preferences, and other custom settings.

If you need the old profile for evidence, copy it to another folder before refreshing. Do not delete the old profile until you know the new one works.
Create a new profile
- Type
about:profilesin Firefox’s address bar. - Select Create a New Profile.
- Follow the wizard.
- Start Firefox with the new profile.
- Test the browser before importing old settings.
If the new profile works, import only the personal data you need. Avoid copying the old gmp-eme-adobe folder into the new profile.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine an old DRM module. This is more likely if the file disappeared suddenly.
- Open your antivirus application.
- Open Protection, Detection history, Quarantine, or a similarly named section.
- Search for
eme-adobe.dll. - Check the recorded original path.
- Confirm that the path belonged to a known Firefox profile.
- Update Firefox instead of restoring the file if you are now using a current release.
Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error. Restore a quarantined copy only when the original Firefox path, installation, and file are known to be legitimate. Never whitelist a random copy downloaded from the internet.
If antivirus reports the file as suspicious, leave it quarantined and run a complete scan.
Fix 4: Remove a stale startup reference
If the dialog appears immediately after signing in to Windows rather than while opening Firefox, another program may be launching an obsolete Firefox command.
Check Startup Apps
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for Firefox entries or unfamiliar programs associated with an old browser installation.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Check shortcuts
Right-click the shortcut that triggers the message and select Properties. Inspect the Target field. Remove the shortcut if it points to an old Firefox folder or a missing profile.
Check Task Scheduler
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that launch Firefox, browser utilities, backup software, or old media software.
- Select a task and inspect its Actions tab.
- Disable only a task you can identify as obsolete.
If the error names another application, repair or uninstall that application rather than deleting Firefox files blindly.
Fix 5: Repair the application that actually calls the DLL
The filename does not prove that Firefox is producing every eme-adobe.dll error. A launcher, archived application, shortcut, or repackaged program may contain a stale reference.

Find the caller by checking:
- The title bar and text of the dialog
- The shortcut used to start the program
- Task Manager at the time of the error
- The program’s installation and profile folders
- Startup Apps and Task Scheduler
Once identified, use the application’s own repair option:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only after backing up application data.
- If neither option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official developer source.
A complete reinstall is safer than copying a single DLL because it restores the matching executable, configuration, dependencies, and permissions.
Fix 6: Check Windows components only for broader corruption
DISM and System File Checker do not recreate a missing Firefox profile module. Use them when Windows also has damaged system files, failed updates, unexplained crashes, or other built-in component errors.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Firefox or the calling application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both commands report no corruption, return to the Firefox profile and parent-application checks.
Repeating these commands will not supply eme-adobe.dll if the missing file belongs to an old Firefox profile. Outbyte PC Repair can show what Windows repair issues remain before you repeat manual scans; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling Firefox remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to Firefox.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 eme-adobe.dll
A Firefox GMP module is not normally a COM or ActiveX component that needs registry registration. regsvr32 calls a DLL’s registration entry points; it does not restore a missing file, repair its dependencies, or install a Firefox DRM module.
If the command reports that the entry point is missing, that does not identify the real problem. Repair the application that owns the file instead.

Copying a 32-bit Firefox module into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is not a repair. It can create a conflicting search-path reference or expose other programs to an untrusted DLL.
A 32-bit file must be loaded by a compatible 32-bit host application. Changing its folder does not change its architecture or make it a Windows component.
Avoid registry cleaners, driver-update advice, and random DLL download pages. A downloaded file can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different historical build, or leave the original broken profile untouched. The safe sources are Mozilla’s official Firefox installer and the original application developer’s installer or verified backup.
Driver and runtime checks
eme-adobe.dll is not a graphics or device driver, so updating a display, audio, or chipset driver is not a direct fix. Do not reinstall Visual C++ Redistributable packages unless the error separately names a Microsoft runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll.
If the computer also has a genuine device problem:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of identifying which of several device drivers is stale; its free scan shows detected issues, while installation is handled by the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the program that owns eme-adobe.dll.
Prevention
- Keep Firefox and other applications updated through their official installers.
- Do not restore an entire obsolete Firefox profile without testing it separately.
- Keep backups of profiles, but preserve the original folder structure.
- Review antivirus quarantine before restoring removed files.
- Remove old startup shortcuts and scheduled tasks after replacing software.
- Do not keep using an obsolete Firefox build for normal browsing. Legacy releases lack current security support and should be used only for controlled compatibility work.
FAQ
Is eme-adobe.dll a Windows file?
No. It was associated with Firefox’s historical Adobe Primetime DRM module and was normally stored inside a Firefox profile.
Is it part of Adobe Acrobat or Flash Player?
No. The name refers to Adobe Primetime used through Firefox’s old Encrypted Media Extensions support.
Does current Firefox need it?
Generally no. Current Firefox uses Widevine for supported desktop DRM. A current Firefox installation should not need the old Adobe Primetime module.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I download a replacement?
No. There is no verified current official standalone Adobe download for this DLL. Use a current Firefox installer or restore a complete, verified legacy installation only in a controlled compatibility environment.
Why does the error say “not designed to run on Windows”?
That wording can indicate a corrupt file, incompatible legacy build, missing dependency, or an application loading the wrong architecture. It does not mean the file belongs in a Windows system folder.
What if the file exists but will not load?
Check whether the calling program is an old Firefox build, whether antivirus blocked it, and whether the file is corrupt or incompatible. A clean Firefox profile or current reinstall is safer than registry registration.
Should I run System Restore?
Only as a last resort after a known system change and when a suitable restore point exists. It should not be the first response to a missing Firefox profile file.
