mkmkrnl.dll is not a documented Windows component, Microsoft runtime, or known legitimate application library. If Windows reports that mkmkrnl.dll is missing, treat the warning as a possible malware-removal trace before attempting to replace the file.
mkmkrnl.dll: file identification
| Property | What is known |
|---|---|
| Filename | mkmkrnl.dll, sometimes shown as MKMKrnl.dll |
| Publisher | Not listed |
| Description or internal name | Not listed |
| Windows component | No evidence supports this |
| Program association | No legitimate application or game dependency has been identified |
| Known version, size, and architecture | Not reliably listed |
| Reported security status | Historical files with this name have received several Trojan and generic malware detections |
Old security reports associated the file with locations such as C:WindowsMKMKrnl.dll and with startup commands launched through rundll32. Those reports concern older Windows infections, but they explain why a modern computer may show the same filename after antivirus cleanup.
The most important rule is simple: do not download mkmkrnl.dll from a DLL website and do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.
Why Windows says mkmkrnl.dll is missing
A message such as:
WindowsMKMKrnl.dll specified module was not found.
can appear because an antivirus program removed or quarantined the DLL while leaving the command that tried to start it. Windows then attempts to load a file that no longer exists.

A historical startup command looked like this:
rundll32 "C:WINDOWSMKMKrnl.dll",KMainProc
That does not prove every file with this name is identical, but it is a strong reason to investigate startup persistence rather than restore the missing library. The same warning can also return if another malicious component recreates the file or its startup entry.
Fix mkmkrnl.dll errors safely
Follow these steps in order. Do not restore the DLL before completing the security checks.
1. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan
First, check whether Windows Security has already detected the file or a related component.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
- Let the scan complete.
- Open Protection history when the scan finishes.
- For a confirmed threat, choose Remove or Quarantine.
Do not choose Restore simply because Windows reports the file as missing. Restore it only if a trusted security analysis confirms that the detection was false.
Microsoft notes that Protection History is retained for a limited period. Record the threat name, detected path, and action while the entry is available.
If the full scan finds anything, restart Windows after removal and scan again. A successful result is a clean scan with no new detection after reboot.
2. Run Microsoft Defender Offline
A persistent infection can hide while Windows is running. Microsoft Defender Offline restarts the computer and scans outside the normal Windows environment.
- Save your work and close open applications.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
- Select Scan now.
- Confirm the restart.
Windows will reboot and perform the scan before the regular desktop loads. Allow it to finish, then return to Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history to review the result.
Run another full scan after Windows starts normally. If the mkmkrnl.dll warning disappears and no detection returns, the missing-file message was probably a leftover startup reference or part of the removed infection.
3. Remove the stale startup reference
If the scan removes the threat but the warning still appears, remove the command that tries to load it.
Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an unknown entry, a blank publisher, or an item referring to
MKMKrnl.dll,mkmkrnl.dll, orrundll32. - Right-click the suspicious entry.
- Select Disable.
Then check the second startup location:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Startup.
- Turn off any unknown item associated with the warning.
- Restart the computer.
Disabling an entry prevents it from launching, but it may not remove the underlying registry value or scheduled task. If the message continues, continue with the checks below.
Check scheduled tasks
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that run at logon, at startup, or from an unusual folder.
- Select a suspicious task and inspect its Actions tab.
- Look for an action that calls
rundll32, referencesMKMKrnl.dll, or launches an unknown file from a temporary or user-writable location. - If antivirus has identified the task as malicious, right-click it and select Delete.
Do not delete a task merely because its name is unfamiliar. Check its action, publisher, location, and security verdict first.

Check the registry only if you are comfortable
Registry locations used for startup persistence can vary by Windows version. Before changing anything, create a restore point or export the relevant key.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
regedit. - Press Enter and approve the administrator prompt.
- Use Edit > Find to search for
mkmkrnl.dll. - Review each result.
- Remove only a startup value that clearly points to the missing file or the confirmed malware.
- Restart Windows.
Historical infections using this filename were associated with Explorer and Policies startup entries. Modern Windows may show a different location, so do not assume that an old path is present on your computer.
If you are unsure about a registry value, leave it in place and have a qualified technician review it. A clean antivirus scan does not make every unfamiliar startup entry safe to delete.
4. Repair Windows components only if other Windows features are damaged
mkmkrnl.dll is not a protected Windows file, so System File Checker will not download or recreate it. Use DISM and SFC only when you also have damaged Windows features, update failures, crashes, or other system-file errors.

- Right-click Windows Terminal.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Then run:
sfc /scannow
Run the commands separately. Restart Windows after both commands complete.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, test the affected program or restart the computer to check whether the warning remains. If it reports no integrity violations, that is expected when the problem is a malicious or third-party startup reference rather than Windows corruption.
The manual process can involve repeating DISM and SFC without knowing which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing what it identifies; repair is handled by the full version, but reinstalling the program or removing the malware remains the definitive fix for this filename.
5. Reinstall the affected program only when its identity is verified
No legitimate publisher or supported package has been verified for mkmkrnl.dll. Therefore, do not assume that a game or application named in the error is the file’s real owner.
If the message appears immediately after opening a known program:
- Note the program name and its installation folder.
- Check Windows Security > Protection history for a related detection.
- Download the program again only from its official developer, publisher, Microsoft Store listing, or a trusted platform that officially distributes it.
- Uninstall the existing program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current official release.
- Test the program before restoring old add-ons or modified files.
If the warning appears during Windows startup rather than when opening one application, reinstalling an unrelated program is unlikely to help. Focus on malware scanning and startup cleanup instead.
6. Check drivers only when the wider failure indicates a driver problem
A missing mkmkrnl.dll message is not, by itself, evidence of a missing driver. Check Device Manager only if you also see hardware failures, an unknown device, or a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device with a warning icon.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
For a clean driver reinstall, right-click the affected device, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page. Do not remove a device unless you know which hardware it represents.
Hunting through dozens of driver versions is unnecessary when Device Manager identifies a broader driver problem. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show the driver issues it finds; installation is handled by the full version, while malware cleanup and reinstalling the program remain the correct fixes for mkmkrnl.dll.
7. Use Windows Features only for a clearly identified dependency
Windows Features will not install mkmkrnl.dll, and enabling random components is not a safe repair.

If a verified application specifically requires a Windows feature:
- Open Start and search for Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open the result.
- Enable only the feature named in the application’s official documentation.
- Select OK.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable legacy components merely because a DLL error contains an unfamiliar filename. If the program requires a Microsoft runtime, obtain that runtime from Microsoft’s official documentation or the program developer, not from a DLL download page.
8. Use System Restore or reinstall Windows for a persistent compromise
Use System Restore when the problem began after a recent installation or system change and malware cleanup has not resolved it.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the warning began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs, but normally does not remove personal files. It is not a substitute for an antivirus scan.
If detections return after reboot, the startup warning keeps reappearing, or the system shows broader signs of compromise, back up personal documents carefully and use Windows recovery or trusted installation media. Reinstalling Windows is the more dependable escalation when malware persists and recovery options fail.

- Do not download
mkmkrnl.dllfrom a random DLL site. - Do not copy it into
System32,SysWOW64, or an application folder. - Do not run
regsvr32 mkmkrnl.dllas a general repair. - Do not whitelist the file because its name appears in an error.
- Do not restore it from antivirus quarantine without verifying the exact file, path, hash, signature, and detection.
- Do not assume SFC or DISM will restore it.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide COM registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal DLL repair command. If this file is malicious or lacks that registration entry point, registration will not solve the startup problem.

FAQ
Is mkmkrnl.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No documented Microsoft component or redistributable package has been verified for this filename. Public historical samples named MKMKrnl.dll were repeatedly classified as malware by security vendors.
Should I put the file in System32?
No. Copying an untrusted DLL into a Windows folder can reintroduce malware and create architecture or version conflicts. It also leaves the startup trigger untouched.
Is the missing-file message harmless?
It can be harmless after antivirus quarantine if only a stale startup command remains. It is not harmless to ignore repeated detections, unexplained startup entries, or a file that recreates itself.
Does the DLL need to be registered?
No. Do not use regsvr32 for this warning. Registration is relevant only to a known, legitimate COM DLL whose developer documents that procedure.

What if the warning returns after a reboot?
Run a full scan followed by Microsoft Defender Offline, then inspect Startup apps, scheduled tasks, browser extensions, removable media, and registry startup locations. A return after reboot suggests persistence or reinfection rather than a missing runtime.
Can SFC fix mkmkrnl.dll?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It may report no problem because mkmkrnl.dll is not a protected Windows component.
