“The program can’t start because mfasfsrcsnk.dll is missing from your computer.” If mfasfsrcsnk.dll was not found or could not be loaded, repair Windows Media Foundation before downloading anything.
mfasfsrcsnk.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called the Media Foundation ASF Source and Sink DLL. It helps Windows read, stream, encode, and write ASF media through Media Foundation.
Which fix applies to you
Use this order:
- Several programs fail, or the error appeared after a crash, failed update, or disk problem: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- You use Windows 10 or 11 N: install the official Media Feature Pack.
- Only one game or application fails: repair or reinstall that program after checking its files.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The message says “specified module could not be found”: the DLL may exist, but another dependency may be missing.
- The error began after a driver or graphics update: check Device Manager, but treat driver repair as a secondary step.
- You found the file in an unusual folder: verify its signature and scan for malware.
Do not begin with Visual C++, DirectX, regsvr32, or a random DLL download. This is normally a Windows Media Foundation problem, not a Visual C++ runtime or ordinary driver problem.
What mfasfsrcsnk.dll does
ASF means Advanced Systems Format, a Microsoft media container used for audio and video. Media Foundation uses source components to read media and sink components to write or stream it. Microsoft documents this behavior in its ASF Media Source and ASF Media Sinks documentation.

The normal 64-bit Windows copy is generally:
C:WindowsSystem32mfasfsrcsnk.dll
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system components used by 32-bit programs are normally redirected through:
C:WindowsSysWOW64mfasfsrcsnk.dll
This naming is confusing: System32 contains native 64-bit files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files. Microsoft explains the behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
The exact version and size vary by Windows release, architecture, language, and servicing level. Do not replace a file just because its version differs from a result found online.
First, identify the failure
Before repairing anything, record these details:
- Press Windows key + R, type
winver, and press Enter. - Note whether Windows is 10 or 11 and whether the edition includes N.
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Check System type to see whether Windows is 64-bit.
- Note whether one application fails or several applications fail.
- Write down the complete error, including any status such as
0xc0000020.
Common messages include:
- “The code execution cannot proceed because mfasfsrcsnk.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading mfasfsrcsnk.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “mfasfsrcsnk.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Failed to load mfasfsrcsnk.dll.”
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL is absent. Windows may have found mfasfsrcsnk.dll but failed to load a dependency required by it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 1: Repair Windows component files with DISM and SFC
This is the best first repair when the error affects multiple programs or appeared after an unexpected shutdown, failed update, storage problem, or system cleanup.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Leave the administrator Command Prompt open.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which is the source Windows uses to restore protected files.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the affected program.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its guide to repairing missing or corrupted system files.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart before testing. If it says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more. Persistent failures require checking the SFC result and CBS.log rather than copying a replacement DLL.
If you want help identifying which Windows components are damaged instead of repeatedly guessing through DISM and SFC, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention; its repair features require the full version, and reinstalling the affected game or application remains the definitive fix when that program is damaged.
Fix 2: Install Media Feature Pack on Windows N
Windows N editions omit certain media technologies. If your edition is N and an application depends on Media Foundation, install the official Media Feature Pack.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose View features beside Add an optional feature.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it, choose Next, and select Install.
- Restart Windows when installation finishes.
Microsoft provides the current instructions for the Media Feature Pack for Windows 10 and Windows 11 N.

Test the program after restarting. This fix is specifically for N editions. It is not the usual answer when a standard Windows edition has a corrupted system file.

Fix 3: Update or repair Windows after a failed update
A partially installed update can leave system components inconsistent.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Run DISM and SFC again using the commands above.
On Windows 11, you may also see a repair option:
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, personal files, and settings. If the option is unavailable, continue with the other repair methods rather than forcing an incompatible package.
Fix 4: Repair the affected game or application
If only one game or application reports mfasfsrcsnk.dll, the program’s installation may be damaged even though the DLL belongs to Windows.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
First use the program’s built-in repair feature or game launcher verification:
- Open the launcher or application manager.
- Select the affected game or program.
- Open its Manage, Properties, or Settings menu.
- Choose Verify files, Verify integrity, Scan and repair, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the check to finish.
- Restart the program.
If verification does not help, uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer or launcher. Do not copy mfasfsrcsnk.dll into the program folder unless the developer’s documented installer specifically requires it.
A program can report a Windows DLL when the real failure is an incompatible dependency, damaged configuration, or incomplete application update.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Windows Security may have quarantined a file after a detection or false positive.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the application or
mfasfsrcsnk.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect its path and detection details.
Only restore a file when its location and digital signature are trustworthy and you have confirmed the detection is false. Do not disable antivirus protection to install an unverified DLL. Microsoft explains the risks and options in its Protection History guidance.
Run Scan options > Full scan if the file repeatedly disappears or system files become corrupted again. If malware is suspected, disconnect from risky networks, complete the scan, and repair Windows afterward.
Fix 6: Check the file path and architecture
Do not assume every file with this name is genuine. In File Explorer, check the location of any copy mentioned by the error or found through a search.
A normal Windows copy should be under the Windows directory, usually System32 or SysWOW64. Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. A Windows system copy should have a valid Microsoft signature.
On 64-bit Windows:
- Native 64-bit components normally use
System32. - 32-bit components normally use
SysWOW64. - A 32-bit DLL must not replace a 64-bit DLL.
- Files from different Windows builds should not be mixed.
Do not copy the file from another PC unless the Windows build, architecture, language, signature, and servicing state match. Even then, DISM and SFC are safer because they restore the correct protected component through Windows servicing.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when diagnostics point there
mfasfsrcsnk.dll is a Media Foundation component, not a hardware driver. Reinstalling a graphics or audio driver is therefore not the normal fix. Consider it only if the same failure is accompanied by a separate Device Manager error, display crash, audio failure, or recent driver installation.
To check:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any category showing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and read the Device status message.
- Use Driver > Update Driver or download the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If you want to avoid hunting through hardware vendors and comparing driver versions manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its driver installation features require the full version, and a driver update is relevant only when diagnostics identify a separate driver problem.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose Windows DLL repair command.
Running this against mfasfsrcsnk.dll will normally produce an error or accomplish nothing. Do not use it unless the application developer or Microsoft documentation specifically instructs you to register that component. Microsoft documents the command’s actual purpose in regsvr32.
Avoid random DLL download sites
Downloading an isolated DLL is risky because it may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to another Windows build, or have an invalid signature. It also does not repair the component store or the dependency that caused the load failure.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Optional Features, Windows Security, and the affected application’s official installer instead. There is no need to search for a standalone mfasfsrcsnk.dll installer.

FAQ
Is mfasfsrcsnk.dll safe?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows Media Foundation component. A copy in an unusual folder, without a valid Microsoft signature, should be scanned and investigated.
Is it part of Visual C++ or DirectX?
No. It is not established as a Visual C++ Redistributable or DirectX runtime DLL. Repair Windows Media Foundation first.
Should I reinstall the application or Windows?
If one application fails, repair or reinstall that application first. If multiple programs fail, repair Windows with DISM and SFC. A full Windows reinstall is a recovery option, not the first step.
