cygvorbis-0.dll is a Cygwin runtime DLL for the Ogg Vorbis audio codec. When Windows reports that cygvorbis-0.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the safest fix is usually to repair the Cygwin package that owns it, or repair the third-party application that bundled its own Cygwin files.
The official Cygwin package is named libvorbis0. It depends on other Cygwin components, including libogg0 and the main cygwin runtime. This is not a Windows system file, Microsoft Visual C++ file, DirectX component, or device driver.
Fix 1: Reinstall libvorbis0 with Cygwin Setup
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Use this fix first if you installed Cygwin yourself or the failing program runs from a Cygwin environment.
- Close the program showing the error.
- Close Cygwin Terminal, mintty, editors, shells, services, and other Cygwin programs.
- Download and run the official Cygwin installer,
setup-x86_64.exe, if you use a 64-bit installation. - Choose the same Cygwin root directory as the existing installation. Common locations include:
C:cygwin64C:cygwin- Continue through the installer until the package chooser appears.
- Search for
libvorbis0. - Click the word
SkiporKeepbeside the package until an available version is selected. - If the chooser offers a reinstall action through the
Keeptoggle, select that option. - Leave dependencies such as
libogg0andcygwinselected if Setup marks them for installation or updating. - Continue through the download and installation screens.
- Restart the affected program.
The repaired file normally appears in the Cygwin installation’s Windows bin directory, for example:
#1 Best Overall
C:cygwin64bincygvorbis-0.dll
C:cygwinbincygvorbis-0.dll
Inside Cygwin, the corresponding path may be shown as:
/usr/bin/cygvorbis-0.dll
How to tell whether this worked
The program should start without the missing-DLL message. If several cyg*.dll files are missing, or Setup reports incomplete packages, rerun Setup and update or reinstall the affected packages rather than copying individual files.
If Setup fails, close every Cygwin process and try again. Keep the local Cygwin package cache if the installer offers that choice. Setup logs, including setup.log and setup.log.full, can help identify a locked file, interrupted update, or download problem.
Fix 2: Repair the application that bundled Cygwin
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Not every program uses your main Cygwin installation. Some third-party Windows applications ship Cygwin libraries inside their own application folder. In that case, reinstalling your separate Cygwin installation may not repair the program.
First identify the executable that fails:
- Read the full error dialog and note the program name.
- Right-click the program shortcut and select Properties.
- Check the Target field for the executable path.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Look for
cygvorbis-0.dllin the application directory or one of its runtime subfolders.
If the application has a launcher, updater, repair option, or verify-files feature, use it. Otherwise:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, Modify, or Repair if available.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall the program.
- Download its installer from the developer’s official source.
- Install it again and launch it from the newly created shortcut.
Do not replace the application’s private DLL with a file taken from C:cygwin64bin. Windows normally checks the application directory early in its DLL search process, and mixing files from different Cygwin installations or runtime generations can produce more missing dependencies.
How to tell which installation the program uses
If the program is launched from a Cygwin terminal, it may use the Cygwin root associated with that terminal and its PATH. If it is launched from a normal Windows shortcut, it may use a private runtime beside the application.
Multiple installations can also cause confusion. For example, C:cygwin and C:cygwin64 may both exist, while an old shortcut or PATH entry points to only one of them. Repair the installation that owns the executable being launched.

Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A message naming cygvorbis-0.dll does not always mean that this exact file is absent. The file may exist, but Windows may be unable to load one of its dependencies, or the executable and DLL may come from different installations.
Open a Cygwin Terminal and run:
cygcheck -p 'cygvorbis-0.dll'
This searches the Cygwin package repository and confirms the package associated with the filename.
Check the installed package:
cygcheck -c -v libvorbis0
If the package is marked incomplete, reinstall it through Cygwin Setup.
If the file exists, ask Cygwin which package owns it:
cygcheck -f /usr/bin/cygvorbis-0.dll
Use the actual path if your installation stores the file elsewhere.
To inspect the failing executable and its dependencies, run:
Rank #3
cygcheck path/to/program.exe
Replace path/to/program.exe with the real path. Look for missing libraries or references to an unexpected Cygwin root.
Check for the wrong PATH
In Cygwin Terminal, run:
echo $PATH
Look for old entries pointing to another Cygwin installation. A stale path can cause the program to load cygwin1.dll, cygogg-0.dll, or other runtime files from a different root.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A 32-bit application needs compatible 32-bit runtime files. A 64-bit application needs compatible 64-bit files. A 64-bit version of Windows does not make every installed application 64-bit.
A mismatch may produce errors such as:
0xc000007b- “The application was unable to start correctly”
- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
- A missing procedure or entry point message
Do not try several downloaded versions of cygvorbis-0.dll to solve these messages. Instead:
- Determine whether the failing application is 32-bit or 64-bit from its documentation or installer.
- Confirm whether it uses your Cygwin installation or a private runtime.
- Repair or reinstall the application from its original official installer.
- For a Cygwin program, rerun the appropriate Cygwin Setup program against its existing root.
- Keep all related packages from the same installation and update cycle.
Current Cygwin guidance focuses on 64-bit x86_64 installations. Older 32-bit Cygwin installations are a legacy case and may require repairing the original application rather than mixing old and current runtime files.

Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may remove or quarantine a DLL after it was already installed. This is a possibility, not proof that cygvorbis-0.dll is commonly targeted.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected application or Cygwin directory.
- Do not restore an unverified file from quarantine.
- If the file is clearly associated with the installed package, update the security definitions and reinstall
libvorbis0through Cygwin Setup. - Run a security scan before launching the program again.
Reinstalling through Setup is safer than restoring an isolated DLL because it restores the package and checks its related files.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader damage
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
cygvorbis-0.dll is owned by Cygwin, so SFC and DISM do not normally restore it. Use these tools when Windows itself is also malfunctioning, other protected system files are damaged, or automatic repair has identified a wider component problem.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the missing file belongs to Cygwin. Outbyte PC Repair can show what Windows repair issues it detects, while the full version performs its repair functions; reinstalling the affected Cygwin package or application remains the definitive fix for this file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSystem Restore is also a secondary option. Use it only when the failure began after a known system change and a suitable restore point exists. It is not the normal repair for one missing Cygwin package.
Fix 7: Do not treat this as a driver problem
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A codec runtime DLL is not a hardware driver. Updating Device Manager drivers, Windows Features, or DirectX will not normally restore cygvorbis-0.dll.
Only investigate drivers if the application also reports audio-device failures, display problems, or broader hardware errors:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Outbyte Driver Updater can identify outdated drivers without manually hunting through many hardware pages; its free scan reports findings, while the full version performs driver installation. This is secondary here, because repairing the Cygwin package or owning application is still the correct fix for cygvorbis-0.dll.

Why you should not download or register the DLL manually
Avoid DLL download websites and random file mirrors. An arbitrary copy can contain malware, target the wrong architecture, come from a different runtime generation, or depend on libraries that are also missing. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder can also make Windows load an incompatible file before it reaches the correct Cygwin runtime.
regsvr32 is not an appropriate repair command:
regsvr32 cygvorbis-0.dll
Do not run it for this file. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. A Cygwin codec runtime is not normally registered that way.
Best Value
The safe sources are the official Cygwin Setup program for a Cygwin installation and the original developer’s installer or repair function for an application that bundles Cygwin.

FAQ
Is cygvorbis-0.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is a Cygwin runtime DLL containing the Ogg Vorbis codec library. Windows does not normally provide it as a protected system component.
Which package contains cygvorbis-0.dll?
The official Cygwin package is libvorbis0. Its related dependencies include libogg0 and cygwin.
Should I put the file in System32?
No. Install or reinstall the owning package instead. System-directory copying can create an incompatible or unsafe DLL search path.
Why is the DLL present but the program still fails?
Another dependency may be missing, the program may be loading a different Cygwin root, or the DLL may not match the application’s architecture. Run cygcheck path/to/program.exe from a Cygwin Terminal.
Should I use SFC or DISM first?
Not for an isolated Cygwin DLL error. Repair libvorbis0 or the owning application first. Use SFC and DISM when Windows shows broader system corruption.
