avcodec-52.dll is an old, application-bundled FFmpeg codec library. If Windows reports that avcodec-52.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair the specific program that displays the message rather than downloading a replacement into System32.
The file is not a normal Windows component. It usually belongs beside an older application’s executable or inside that program’s private FFmpeg folder. Windows searches the application directory before system locations, so restoring the matching files to that folder is the safest solution.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the affected application
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Start with the program named in the error. It might be an older audio or video application, webcam utility, game, or another multimedia tool.
- Close the error message and the affected program.
- Note the exact application name and whether the message says “missing,” “not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “error 126.”
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three dots beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Start the application again.
If there is no Repair option, use the application’s own installer or launcher. Look for Repair, Verify, Scan and repair, or Check files. For a game, file verification is usually preferable to manually replacing one DLL.

If the program starts normally, the matching FFmpeg bundle has probably been restored. Test the feature that previously failed, such as importing audio, opening a video, or starting the webcam.
If Repair does not help, uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows, and install it again from the publisher’s official installer or the official launcher. Avoid restoring an old DLL from a separate download page.
For an older program, right-click its shortcut or executable, choose Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and try Run this program as an administrator once. If that works, use the program’s own settings or a properly configured shortcut rather than permanently changing permissions without a reason.
Fix 2: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a bundled DLL. Check this before repeatedly reinstalling the application.
- Open the Start menu.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for the affected application’s folder or for
avcodec-52.dll. - Expand a detection to see its path and details.
Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error. Microsoft recommends restoring a quarantined item only when you know that the file is safe.
First confirm that the application came from its publisher, official store, or official game launcher. If the installer is trusted and the detection clearly points to that installation, restore the item only if Windows Security provides that action, then reinstall or repair the entire application so all companion files come from the same package.
If the detection is unfamiliar, leave it quarantined, remove the application, run a Windows Security scan, and install a clean copy from the official source. A random DLL download is not a safe substitute.

Fix 3: Restore the complete matching FFmpeg bundle
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
avcodec-52.dll identifies an old FFmpeg libavcodec ABI generation. It does not identify one universal file with one universal version, size, publisher, or architecture.

avformat-52.dllavutil-50.dllswscale-0.dll
Historical Audacity FFmpeg packages used this group of libraries, and Logitech Webcam Software has also been documented with avcodec-52.dll in its own application directory. Current Audacity releases use newer FFmpeg library generations, so installing a current FFmpeg package does not necessarily satisfy an older program expecting ABI 52.
To check the application directory:
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for the application’s executable and its FFmpeg folder.
- Check whether
avcodec-52.dlland its companion files are present.
Do not mix files from different applications or different FFmpeg packages. If the file is present but the error remains, the missing item may actually be a dependency. Error 126 means Windows could not load a required module; it does not prove that the named DLL itself is absent.
The correct manual copy is only a restoration from the same trusted installer or application backup, into that application’s own directory. Copying a single DLL from another program can create a second mismatch.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A 32-bit application needs 32-bit FFmpeg libraries. A 64-bit application needs 64-bit libraries. The Windows edition alone does not tell you which architecture the older program uses.
Check the application documentation or installer. You can also:

- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Start the affected program.
- Find its process in the list.
- On some Windows installations, a 32-bit process is marked with “32” or “*32”.
A 32-bit application is commonly installed under C:Program Files (x86), while 64-bit applications are commonly installed under C:Program Files. These locations are clues, not proof.
Error 193 often indicates that Windows received a binary with an invalid or incompatible format. If you see that error, reinstall the application’s matching build and keep every FFmpeg companion DLL from that same installer. Do not copy a 64-bit file into a 32-bit program folder or the reverse.

Fix 5: Install a missing Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This step applies when the error also names a file such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll. Those are Microsoft runtime files, not replacements for avcodec-52.dll.
- Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Open Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Download the official
vc_redist.x86.exefor a 32-bit application orvc_redist.x64.exefor a 64-bit application. - Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if that option appears, or complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the affected application.
If the program still reports avcodec-52.dll, reinstall the application itself. A Visual C++ runtime can resolve a dependency, but it does not recreate the application’s private FFmpeg bundle.
Fix 6: Update the application and its drivers
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Check the publisher’s official update channel for the affected application. An update may replace an obsolete FFmpeg integration with a newer, supported library set.
For a webcam or capture device:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras, Imaging devices, Sound, video and game controllers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the device stopped working after an update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver only when the button is available and the timing clearly matches the failure. Otherwise, obtain the driver from the device manufacturer’s official support page.

Fix 7: Run Windows component repair only for wider system problems
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate an application-private FFmpeg DLL. Use them when Windows has other damaged-system symptoms, not as the first response to this filename.
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both commands complete but the application still reports avcodec-52.dll, return to the application’s repair or reinstall process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRepeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can show issues in its free scan and the full version performs repairs, but it is optional; the application’s official repair or reinstall remains the definitive fix for this DLL.
Do not register or copy this DLL as a generic fix
regsvr32 is not a normal repair command for FFmpeg codec libraries. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary runtime codec library is loaded by the application and normally does not need registration.
Do not copy avcodec-52.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Another application’s folder
- A folder found through a random DLL download page
That copy may have the wrong architecture, wrong ABI generation, missing companions, or unsafe contents. It can also interfere with Windows DLL search behavior. Keep private application libraries with the application that supplied them.
Common causes of the error
The most likely causes are:
| Cause | Correct response |
|---|---|
| The application bundle was deleted or damaged | Repair or reinstall the named application |
| Windows Security quarantined the file | Verify the installer, inspect Protection history, then restore or reinstall safely |
| Only part of an FFmpeg package was installed | Restore the complete matching bundle |
| The wrong ABI generation was used | Install the application’s required version, not current FFmpeg at random |
| 32-bit and 64-bit files were mixed | Reinstall the matching application build |
| A dependency is missing | Read the full error and repair the complete package |
| The application is too old for the current Windows setup | Update it or use Program Compatibility Troubleshooter |
| A Microsoft runtime is missing | Install the appropriate official Visual C++ Redistributable |
Use Program Compatibility Troubleshooter for older software

FAQ
Is avcodec-52.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is an old FFmpeg codec library normally bundled with the application that needs it. It should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.

Can I download one official universal copy?
No. The filename alone cannot determine the exact build, bitness, dependencies, publisher, or intended application. Restore it through the affected program’s official installer or launcher.
Why does the error remain when the file is visible?
The named file may have a missing dependency, incompatible architecture, damaged contents, or the wrong ABI generation. Error 126 can mean that a dependency could not be loaded.
Will installing the newest FFmpeg fix the problem?
Not necessarily. Older programs expecting ABI 52 may require the complete historical library set they were built to use.
Could this be an Audacity problem?
It could be if an older Audacity installation or FFmpeg integration displays the message. Current Audacity versions use newer supported FFmpeg library generations, so repair the version of Audacity that is actually installed rather than copying an old DLL into it.
Should I use System Restore?
Only as a last resort when the application worked before a clearly identified recent system change. Reinstalling or repairing the application is more direct and does not guarantee that System Restore will restore the correct DLL bundle.
Final escalation checklist
If the error remains, record:
- The exact application name and version shown in its About or installer screen.
- The full error text and error number.
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The application’s installation directory.
- Whether
avcodec-52.dlland its companion libraries are present. - Any Windows Security quarantine entry.
- Whether the failure began after an update, cleanup, migration, backup restore, or reinstallation.
- Whether the message names
avutil-50.dll,avformat-52.dll,swscale-0.dll,MSVCP*.dll, orVCRUNTIME*.dll.
That information identifies whether the problem is a missing application bundle, dependency failure, architecture mismatch, or obsolete software integration. In every case, repair the exact program that owns the file rather than applying a system-wide DLL hack.
