It is not a Windows system DLL, so copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is not the correct fix.
A message saying the file is missing usually means the Action. installation is incomplete, damaged, or quarantated. A crash that names the file can instead indicate a conflict between Action.’s DirectX capture hook and a game, overlay, anti-cheat system, or graphics driver.
1. Repair or reinstall Mirillis Action.
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
This is the safest and most likely fix for messages such as:
- “action_x64.dll is missing”
- “action_x64.dll was not found”
- “Cannot find action_x64.dll”
- “This application failed to start because action_x64.dll was not found”
- “action_x64.dll error loading”
Close Action., the affected game, launchers, browsers using capture features, and other recording or overlay applications.

- Download the current Action. installer from the official Mirillis Action. download page.
- Run the installer.
- If it offers Repair, Update, or installation over the existing copy, choose that option.
- Restart Windows.
- Start Action. before starting the affected game or application.
If the installer does not offer repair:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Action..
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official Mirillis installer again.
- Launch Action. and test recording before opening the game.
You can also check whether Windows exposes a repair option through Control Panel:
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Right-click Action..
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts and restart Windows.
A successful repair restores the file inside the Action. installation directory and allows Action. to open without the missing-file message. Action. may be installed under a path such as:
C:Program Files (x86)MirillisAction.
The Program Files (x86) folder does not prove that the DLL is 32-bit. Action. can contain both 32-bit and 64-bit components. Do not move the file to a Windows system folder.
If reinstalling does not help, continue with the antivirus and compatibility checks below rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
Security software may quarantine or remove Action.’s capture module because the program hooks graphics-rendering processes. This can happen after an Action. update, a Windows security update, or a change to antivirus detection rules.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving Action. or
action_x64.dll. - Expand the entry and review its location and detection details.
Only restore or allow the file if all of the following are true:
- Action. was installed from the official Mirillis source.
- The file is located in the Action. installation directory.
- You recognize the installation and its recent update.
- The security result does not indicate that the file came from an unknown download.
If those checks are satisfied, use the available Restore or Allow on device action, then reinstall Action. from the official installer if the file is still absent. Do not blindly allow an unknown DLL based only on its filename.

Test Action. after the restore. If the file is quarantined again, leave the detection in place, remove the questionable installation, scan the computer, and install Action. again from Mirillis.

Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
If Action. starts normally but FiveM or another game crashes while naming action_x64.dll, the DLL may not be missing. Action.’s capture component hooks DirectX rendering functions, so another program can reject or conflict with it.
Temporarily disable Action.’s game capture feature:
- Open Action..
- Open its recording or game-capture settings.
- Turn off game capture or the graphics-hooking capture mode.
- Close Action. completely.
- Start the affected game without Action. running.
Also close competing overlays and capture utilities, including:
- Game Bar overlays
- Graphics-card recording overlays
- Chat overlays
- Performance-monitoring overlays
- Other screen recorders
- RivaTuner Statistics Server
- Mod or injector utilities
Retest after closing each group of software. If the game works only when Action. is closed, update Action. and the conflicting utility, then check the game or anti-cheat vendor’s compatibility guidance. Some protected games and anti-cheat systems may block or reject capture hooks.
Do not weaken anti-cheat protection broadly or add random exclusions. If the error appears only in FiveM or one protected game, the game-specific compatibility issue is more likely than a damaged DLL.
A successful test is one in which the game launches and remains stable with Action.’s capture mode disabled. If the crash continues with Action. uninstalled and all overlays closed, inspect the game, driver, and Windows logs instead of replacing the DLL.

4. Install Visual C++ only when the error identifies it
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
The .dll extension alone does not mean that Visual C++ is the cause. action_x64.dll belongs to Action., but an Action. build can also depend on Microsoft runtime libraries.
Look for messages or diagnostic entries naming files such as:
MSVCP*.dllMSVCR*.dllVCRUNTIME*.dll
If one of those files is identified, use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable page.
- Download
vc_redist.x64.exefor the 64-bit Action. application. - Run the installer.
- Choose Repair, or install it if it is not present.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Action. again.
A 64-bit version of Windows can run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. If a separate 32-bit application reports a runtime dependency, install vc_redist.x86.exe as well. Older applications may require an older Visual C++ generation, and multiple generations can correctly remain installed side by side.
The test succeeds when the runtime error disappears and Action. starts. If the message still names action_x64.dll, repair Action. itself. Do not replace its program DLL with a Visual C++ file.
5. Update or roll back the graphics driver
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
A Windows update, graphics-driver update, or overlay update can expose a DirectX-hook conflict. This is especially relevant when the problem began immediately after one of those changes and Action. worked previously.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
Then choose the action that matches the timing:
- Select Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers if the driver is old.
- Install the current driver from the graphics hardware manufacturer if Windows does not find one.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the problem began directly after a driver update and the button is available.
Restart Windows after changing the driver. Update or temporarily disable performance overlays at the same time, since they can hook the same rendering process.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through hardware entries and guessing which of several drivers is stale; its free scan identifies driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling or updating Action. remains the definitive fix when its own installation is damaged.
If the game works after disabling the overlay but fails when it returns, keep the overlay disabled or use the game’s supported compatibility settings. If no driver change affects the result, continue with Windows component checks and event logs.
6. Repair Windows components when broader corruption is present
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
SFC does not normally restore action_x64.dll because it is a third-party Action. file, not a protected Windows component. Use DISM and SFC when several Windows applications are failing, Windows reports system corruption, or the issue began with broader operating-system damage.

- Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it repaired or found no integrity violations. These commands may repair Windows dependencies, but they will not normally recreate a deleted Action. installation file. Reinstall Action. afterward if action_x64.dll is still absent.

If the file exists but the application still fails:
- Open the Action. installation folder.
- Confirm that
action_x64.dllis inside that folder, not just somewhere on the disk. - Right-click the file, choose Properties, and review its location and Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Press
Windows + R, typeeventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Find the error recorded at the crash time.
- Note the faulting application, faulting module, and exception code.
A crash naming action_x64.dll does not prove that the file itself is defective. The faulting executable, DirectX component, graphics driver, overlay list, and whether Action. was running are often more useful than the module name alone.

If every repair fails, back up recordings and settings, uninstall Action., restart Windows, remove only leftover Action. directories, and reinstall from Mirillis. Contact Mirillis support with the full error message and Event Viewer details if the clean reinstall still fails.

Why you should not use regsvr32
Do not run:
regsvr32 action_x64.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. There is no evidence that Action.’s capture module is intended for manual registry registration.

Running the command will not restore a missing file, repair Action., or install its dependencies. It can also produce another confusing error that distracts from the real problem.
Do not download action_x64.dll separately
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong Action. build, the wrong architecture, or an unsigned file. Even a clean-looking replacement may not match the rest of the Action. installation and often does not fix the underlying quarantine, dependency, or capture conflict.
Use the official Mirillis Action. installer instead. Use Microsoft’s official pages for Visual C++ Redistributables and Windows repair commands. The file’s name alone cannot prove that a copy is safe; its source, location, signature, and security results matter.
FAQ
Is action_x64.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Mirillis Action. and should normally remain in Action.’s installation directory.
Is action_x64.dll 64-bit?
Yes. It is the 64-bit Action. module. Action. also has an action_x86.dll counterpart for 32-bit components. The application architecture must match its dependencies, not merely the architecture of Windows.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Those folders are not general DLL storage locations for Action.. Copying the file can create path, version, permission, and security problems.
Is the file automatically safe because it has this name?
No. Confirm that Action. came from Mirillis and that the file is located in the expected Action. directory. Check its signature and scan results before restoring a quarantined copy.
Why does FiveM mention action_x64.dll?
Action. can hook graphics rendering for capture. FiveM, anti-cheat software, another overlay, or a driver may conflict with that hook. Disable Action.’s game capture and competing overlays to test this branch.
Will SFC restore the file?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while action_x64.dll belongs to a third-party application. Reinstall Action. to restore it.
