nlslexicons0001.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows natural-language component, not a random application DLL. If Windows says nlslexicons0001.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement.
What nlslexicons0001.dll is
The file’s embedded description is Microsoft Neutral Natural Language Server Data and Code. It belongs to the Windows natural-language component family, which can appear in servicing records as Microsoft-Windows-NaturalLanguage6.

The file is associated with Windows rather than a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET runtime or device driver. A Windows 8 file report places it in System32. The related component may also exist in the Windows component store, where DISM obtains protected system files during repair.
Publicly catalogued versions are from the Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 era:

What the error messages mean
You may see wording such as:
- “The program can’t start because nlslexicons0001.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “nlslexicons0001.dll was not found.”
- “Cannot find nlslexicons0001.dll.”
- “nlslexicons0001.dll could not be located.”
- “nlslexicons0001.dll error loading.”
- “nlslexicons0001.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording is useful, but it does not identify the cause by itself.
- Missing or not found usually means the expected file is absent, the Windows component is damaged, or the application is looking in the wrong place.
- Could not be loaded means Windows found or attempted to find the file but could not load it. Corruption, dependency problems, permissions or architecture mismatches are possible.
- Not designed to run on Windows or contains an error often indicates a mismatched or corrupted binary. Copying a different build into the folder can create this error.
- Only one application fails points toward that program’s installation, update, launcher or compatibility rather than proof that all of Windows is broken.
The filename alone cannot establish which program triggered the message.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then run DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when the file is missing system-wide or Windows reports a protected-component problem. Microsoft’s documented order is DISM first, followed by System File Checker.

1. Install pending updates
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the affected application again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
2. Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter and wait for it to complete.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. That store is important here because Windows uses it as a source for protected operating-system components. Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause.
A successful result says that the restore operation completed successfully or that the component store corruption was repaired. If DISM reports that it could not find source files, do not download nlslexicons0001.dll from a file site. Use a matching Windows installation source with DISM’s /Source option, or move to the escalation steps below.
Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance explains the repair sequence and results.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and unclear. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies, while repair actions are completed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the primary fix.
3. Run SFC after DISM
In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and let the verification reach 100 percent.
The result should say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupted files and repaired them. Restart Windows after SFC completes, then test the application.
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more. If it still cannot repair the file, inspect:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Search the log for nlslexicons0001.dll or Microsoft-Windows-NaturalLanguage6. This can confirm whether the failure is part of Windows servicing rather than an application-only problem.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If the error appears only when opening one program, repair that program after completing the Windows repair checks. The application may have an incomplete update, damaged files or an incorrect dependency reference.
Repair a Microsoft Store or supported packaged app
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
The Repair button is not available for every application. If the error remains and a Reset option is available, understand that resetting can remove the program’s local settings or stored data before using it.
Repair traditional desktop software
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer’s instructions.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer. For a game launcher, use its built-in file verification feature if available, then update the launcher and the game.
Do not assume that installing a Visual C++ package, DirectX or .NET will restore this particular Windows component. Install another runtime only when the complete error identifies that runtime as a separate missing dependency.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 3: Check whether antivirus software quarantined the file
A quarantine event is plausible when the error began immediately after a security scan, cleanup operation or update. The filename alone is not enough to prove that a quarantined item is safe.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving the file or its original path.
- Expand the detection to see the location and action taken.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan before restoring anything.
If the item was genuinely a Microsoft-signed Windows file and its original path matches the expected Windows location, review the detection carefully. Restore it only after its authenticity and the detection details are clear. Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined item can cause Defender to detect it again unless it is explicitly allowed.
If the file was found inside an unfamiliar application folder, do not restore it merely because its name matches. Remove or reinstall the affected application from its official source instead.

Fix 4: Check architecture and file location
A 64-bit Windows installation can contain both 64-bit and 32-bit system components. The application architecture matters, so “64-bit Windows means every DLL must be 64-bit” is not a safe rule.

C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- An application’s installation folder
- The Windows component store
A 32-bit application may use 32-bit Windows components through the system’s redirection rules, while a 64-bit application uses the 64-bit side. A file from Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 may also be incompatible with another build. That can produce “not designed to run on Windows,” entry-point errors or new crashes.
Let Windows servicing restore the version that matches the installed operating system. If manual recovery is unavoidable, use only matching official installation media or a verified system image, not a generic DLL archive.

Consider disk or filesystem corruption if:
- SFC repeatedly reports new corruption.
- Files disappear again after repair.
- Several unrelated Windows system files fail.
- Windows updates repeatedly fail.
- The computer has experienced unexpected shutdowns or storage errors.
Back up important data first. Then run a reputable full security scan, and use Microsoft Defender Offline if malware is suspected. Do not whitelist an unknown replacement DLL or disable protection to make an unverified file load.
If system files continue changing or disappearing after repair, investigate the storage device and Windows event logs rather than repeatedly replacing individual files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 6: Use System Restore when the timing is clear
System Restore is useful when the error began after a Windows update, driver installation or cleanup operation and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, registry settings and installed programs without removing personal files. It does not replace a backup, so preserve important data before using it.
Should you use regsvr32?
No, not as a general fix for this file.
regsvr32 is intended for registering COM or ActiveX DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. The available file information does not show evidence that nlslexicons0001.dll is such a component. It is treated as Windows natural-language data and code, not as an ordinary COM server.
Running commands such as these is therefore unlikely to help:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

regsvr32 nlslexicons0001.dll
It may simply produce an error about a missing entry point, or mask the real servicing problem.
Should you download nlslexicons0001.dll?
No. Random DLL download sites can provide the wrong Windows build, architecture, language or a modified file. A replacement may also load into the wrong folder while leaving the damaged component store untouched.
Use these safe sources instead:
- Windows Update
- DISM and SFC
- The affected application’s official repair or installer
- Matching official Windows installation media
- A verified system image or backup
Do not install a driver package, Windows Feature or runtime solely because it sounds related to DLL loading. Drivers and Windows Features are not established sources for this particular file.
If the repair still fails
If DISM and SFC cannot restore the component:
- Record the exact DISM and SFC result messages.
- Check
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. - Try DISM with a matching Windows installation source and appropriate
/Sourceand/LimitAccessoptions. - Repair or reinstall the application if only one program fails.
- Consider an in-place Windows repair installation using matching official media.
- Back up personal data before major repair work.
If the computer runs Windows Vista or Windows 7, take its support status into account. Windows Vista support ended April 12, 2017, and Windows 7 support ended January 14, 2020. An old system may not be able to obtain the same repair files or updates as a supported Windows installation.

Is nlslexicons0001.dll an application-specific file?
The evidence identifies it as a Microsoft Windows natural-language component. An application may expose the error when it calls that component, but the filename alone does not identify the application.
Is the correct folder System32 or SysWOW64?
The historical Windows 8 report places the file in System32. The correct location and architecture depend on the Windows build and the process loading it. Do not copy a file between System32, SysWOW64 and an application folder manually.
Does this error prove that Windows 10 or Windows 11 is missing the file?
No. The confirmed public records are for legacy Windows generations, and the same filename has not been established for every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 build. On a current system, check whether an old application, compatibility layer or damaged Windows component is generating the message.
What information is useful when asking for help?
Provide the Windows version and build, application name, complete error text, path shown in the message, whether the file exists, and the final DISM and SFC results. Also mention whether antivirus quarantine or a recent update preceded the failure.

Should I update drivers?
Driver updates are not the primary repair for this Windows natural-language component. Check them only when the failure began with broader device or Windows instability.
Quick Recap
If you are manually identifying stale drivers across many devices, Outbyte Driver Updater can show detected driver issues and handle installation with the full version; it is optional and does not replace Windows repair or application reinstallation.
