hpviol.dll is a legacy HP DeskJet printer-driver file, not a normal Windows runtime. If Windows says hpviol.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the old HP printer installation rather than downloading the DLL by itself.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, record:
- Which program shows the error: a printer installer, an old Windows application, or an unrelated program.
- When it appears: during startup, while adding a printer, or when printing.
- The exact printer model: DeskJet 500, 500c, 510, 520, 540, 550C, 560C, or another model.
- Your Windows architecture: open Settings > System > About and check System type.
- The file path, if shown: a printer-driver directory is more credible than a random application folder.
Historical Windows 95 driver inventories identify hpviol.dll as the I/O Language Processor for the HP DeskJet Series 5XX printer driver. It was packaged with files including deskjetc.drv, deskjetc.inf, hpcolor.dll, hpvmon.dll, hpvres.dll, and hpvui.dll.
The documented historical copy was about 25,216 bytes, but that does not establish the size of every driver revision. It is also not evidence that the file belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the printer
This is the most likely fix when the error appears during printing or printer setup.

Remove the existing printer
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected HP printer.
- Click Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting:
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Click Add device.
- Allow Windows to search for the printer.
- If Windows offers a compatible driver, install it.
- Print a test page from the printer’s Printer properties.
Microsoft recommends using Windows Update or the printer manufacturer’s official support page for printer drivers. Use HP’s support page only after identifying the exact model. Do not use a driver for a nearby model simply because the product names look similar.
If the printer is connected by USB, disconnect it while removing the old installation, then reconnect it when Windows asks for the device. For a network printer, confirm that it is powered on and connected to the same network as the computer.
Remove an old driver package if it remains
Removing the printer queue may leave the old driver installed.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
printui /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the old HP driver in the Drivers tab.
- Click Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package if offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Add the printer again.
If the old driver does not appear, do not delete random files from Windows directories. Continue with the correct HP or Windows-integrated driver.

Fix 2: Check whether the printer is supported
A successful installation depends on the exact DeskJet model and the Windows version.
HP lists the DeskJet 500 and 500c as using a Windows-integrated driver on Windows 10. HP lists several nearby models, including the DeskJet 510, 520, 540, 550C, and 560C, as incompatible in that compatibility documentation.
That means a DeskJet 500 may work through a built-in driver while a similar-looking model may not. The original Windows 95-era hpviol.dll package should not be treated as a modern native 64-bit driver.

Check the model label on the printer itself. Then:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Click Add device.
- Select Add manually if automatic discovery fails.
- Choose the appropriate connection type.
- Select the exact HP model if it is listed.
- If it is not listed, check for a Windows Update driver.
- Print a test page.
If HP identifies the printer as incompatible with your Windows version, forcing the old package is unlikely to produce a stable result. The practical choices are a compatible built-in driver, an older supported Windows environment, a print server, or a replacement printer.
Fix 3: Update or reinstall through Device Manager
Device Manager may help when Windows recognizes the printer but loads an incomplete or incorrect driver.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers or Print queues.
- Right-click the HP printer.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If that does not work:
- Right-click the printer again.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Add the printer again from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
Device Manager is not a way to obtain a missing standalone DLL. It can install a compatible device driver only when Windows has an appropriate package available.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a driver component, although that is only one possible cause.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the HP driver or the installer.
- Review the file path and detection details.
Do not restore the file automatically. Restore it only if the complete driver package came from trusted HP media or a legitimate Windows installation source and the detection is demonstrably a false positive. Otherwise, remove the damaged installation and reinstall the complete package.
If the file appears in an unrelated application directory, check that program’s publisher, installation path, and startup entries. A random file named hpviol.dll is not automatically genuine.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
hpviol.dll is not a standard current Windows component. DISM and SFC will not recreate an HP-only driver that was never installed. They are useful when Windows components are damaged and the printer problem is accompanied by broader system errors.

Install pending Windows updates first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Press Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart when both commands complete and try adding the printer again.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that hpviol.dll is a COM or ActiveX component with that entry point.
Do not treat this as a normal repair:
regsvr32 hpviol.dll
It may report that the module loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not prove the DLL is bad. It usually means the file is not meant to be registered that way.
Why copying hpviol.dll is unsafe
Downloading a loose DLL from a random website can provide:

- Malware disguised as a system file.
- The wrong historical driver revision.
- A 32-bit file when the application expects something else.
- A file with no matching
.DRV,.INF, monitor, user-interface, or resource files. - A replacement that hides the original installation problem.
Do not copy it into System32, SysWOW64, the Windows directory, or an unrelated program folder. The safe sources are Windows Update, Microsoft installation media where appropriate, and HP’s official support resources for the exact printer model.
If the error appears in an unrelated program
hpviol.dll is not a normal game, DirectX, Visual C++, or .NET dependency. If a game or unrelated application requests it:
- Note the executable named in the error.
- Check the program’s installation directory.
- Review recently installed printer software.
- Check the program’s startup configuration.
- Repair or reinstall the program that actually reports the error.
- Remove obsolete HP printer software if the printer is no longer used.
An old application may be hard-coded to expect an obsolete printer-driver path. In that case, restoring a system-wide DLL is not the correct solution.

Is hpviol.dll a genuine file?
Yes. Historical HP DeskJet 500-series driver inventories include it. It is a legacy printer-driver component, not an autogenerated filename.

Can an old DeskJet work on modern Windows?
Sometimes, through a Windows-integrated compatible driver. Support depends on the exact model and Windows release. Some DeskJet 500-series models are listed as incompatible.
What if reinstalling the printer does not help?
Check the exact model, Windows architecture, antivirus quarantine, remaining driver packages, and PrintService logs. If the model is unsupported, replacing the driver or printer may be the only reliable resolution.
