The safest fix for a cnhl170s.dll missing or not found error is to identify the Canon printer or scanner that installed it and repair or reinstall its complete driver package.
What this file actually does
The file belongs to a Canon hardware driver package used by Windows imaging features. WIA, or Windows Image Acquisition, allows compatible applications to communicate with scanners and multifunction printers.
Public driver inventories associate CNHL170S.DLL with Canon’s wiacn001.inf package. Older copies have appeared inside Windows DriverStore folders under paths resembling:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepositorywiacn001.inf_amd64_neutral_...CNHL170S.DLL
The folder suffix is machine-specific, so do not expect that exact path on every computer. The file is also not guaranteed to exist on every Canon installation.

The strongest product match is the older Canon PIXMA MP170 and related Canon Inkjet multifunction devices. Canon’s official MP170 package is named MP170 MP Driver Ver. 1.10b, with the installer filename mp170vst110bea13.exe. Canon lists that package for Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows 2000, not Windows 10 or Windows 11.
That compatibility detail matters. A driver that worked on an older Windows installation may fail after an upgrade with messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because cnhl170s.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading cnhl170s.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cnhl170s.dll was not found.”
- “cnhl170s.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library cnhl170s.dll.”
These are Windows loader message patterns reported for this file. They do not prove that the DLL itself is the only damaged component.
Find the cause from the symptom
| What you notice | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears while printing or scanning | Canon driver is missing or damaged | Reinstall the Canon package |
| It began after removing a printer | A Canon startup utility or service remains | Remove obsolete Canon software |
| It started after an antivirus alert | The DLL may be quarantined | Review protection history, then reinstall |
| It appeared after upgrading Windows | The old driver may be unsupported | Check Canon compatibility and consider replacement |
| A Canon utility fails but Windows otherwise works | WIA driver or Canon software problem | Repair the Canon installation |
| Several unrelated Windows files are missing | Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| The file exists but loading still fails | A dependency, architecture mismatch or bad installation | Reinstall the complete driver, not just the DLL |
| The error appears at startup with no printer connected | Leftover Canon software is loading | Uninstall the unused Canon utilities |
Before changing anything, note the exact program named in the error. It may be a Canon scanning application, a startup utility, a print monitor or another program loading an old Canon component.

Fix 1: identify and reinstall the Canon driver
This is the most likely solution when the printer or scanner is still needed.
1. Identify the device
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for a Canon device, especially a PIXMA MP170 or an older multifunction model.
- Select the device and note its exact model.
Also check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a Canon entry, an unknown device or a device with a yellow warning symbol.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and record the provider, date and architecture information if shown.
Do not choose a replacement DLL based only on the filename. Public file records show conflicting sizes and architectures for this component, so the correct copy depends on the complete printer model, driver package and Windows architecture.
2. Remove the damaged Canon software
If the printer is still installed:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Canon.
- Uninstall the Canon MP driver, IJ Scan Utility, printer software and related entries associated with the affected device.
- Restart Windows.
If the device is no longer used, remove the printer first:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Uninstall the remaining Canon software from Installed apps.
- Restart the computer.
For a deeper cleanup, open Device Manager, right-click the old Canon device and select Uninstall device. If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are certain the old Canon package is no longer needed.

3. Install the correct package
Use Canon’s official support site and search for the exact model, not just cnhl170s.dll. Select the Windows release and system architecture offered for that device.
For the MP170, Canon’s documented package is mp170vst110bea13.exe, but its listed support ends with Vista, XP and 2000. Do not assume that package is compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11 simply because it installs.
If the installer requires the printer to be disconnected, disconnect the USB cable before starting and reconnect it only when the installer requests it. This is package-dependent, not a universal requirement.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Reopen Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Confirm that the Canon device appears.
- Print a test page.
- Open the Canon scanning application or Windows scanning software and test the scanner.
If printing works but scanning does not, the printer driver may be present while the Canon WIA component is still missing. Remove the Canon package again and reinstall the complete multifunction driver rather than installing a loose DLL.

It is optional, and the exact Canon package remains the preferred source for an old model.
Fix 2: check whether antivirus removed the file
If the Canon device worked until the error appeared suddenly, check security software before copying anything from the internet.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
cnhl170s.dll, Canon software or the Canon driver installer. - Open the event and review its location and detection details.
Restore the file only if the location and publisher clearly identify it as part of the installed Canon driver. A restored DLL is not a substitute for reinstalling the driver package. Reinstall Canon software afterward, then run a complete security scan.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to make an old driver work. If security software repeatedly removes the file, verify the installer’s source and digital signature and reconsider whether the legacy device should remain connected.
Fix 3: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party Canon DLL, so use them when other Windows files are also failing or when the error began with broader system instability.

First install pending updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then run DISM:
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
After DISM completes, run SFC in the same administrator window:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows and test the Canon software again.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the system. If it reports that it could not repair everything, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If only the Canon application still fails, return to the Canon driver reinstall rather than repeatedly running system repair commands.

Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual repair process easier by showing what its scan finds instead of leaving you to repeat DISM and SFC without knowing what changed; the repair portion is performed by the full version. It is not required, and it cannot replace an incompatible Canon driver.
Fix 4: check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit Canon application running on 64-bit Windows still needs the correct 32-bit component supplied by its driver package. Copying a DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 does not correctly install a printer or scanner driver.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Look at System type under Device specifications.
Use the driver package Canon provides for the exact model and Windows architecture. Do not select a file because an unaffiliated file index lists a particular size, version or checksum. Conflicting public records exist for this DLL, and those records are not enough to determine which copy belongs on your system.
Fix 5: remove a leftover startup entry
If the Canon printer has been removed and the error appears only when Windows starts, the remaining problem may be an old Canon utility rather than an active driver.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Canon entries.
- Right-click an entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
You can also remove unused Canon applications under Settings > Apps > Installed apps. If the error disappears after disabling a startup item, uninstall the associated Canon software if you no longer use the device.
For a more precise diagnosis, open Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time the message appeared.
- Record the executable named in the event.
If the executable is not Canon software, do not assume that reinstalling a Canon driver will solve the problem. The program may be misreporting a missing dependency or loading an unrelated copy.

Do not use regsvr32 as a generic fix
Do not start with:
regsvr32 cnhl170s.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that CNHL170S.DLL is a self-registering COM DLL.
If Windows reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, that does not prove the file is corrupt. Follow Canon’s installer process instead. Printer and scanner drivers depend on package metadata, services and device registration that a single command cannot recreate.
Avoid loose DLL downloads
Do not download cnhl170s.dll from a random DLL website or copy it from another computer. That file may contain malware, belong to the wrong Canon package, use the wrong architecture or fail because another dependency is missing.
Copying it into System32 can also create version conflicts and bypass the driver’s installation metadata. The safe sources are Canon’s official support pages, Windows Update and the original Canon installation media. If Canon no longer provides a compatible package for Windows 10 or Windows 11, a loose DLL is not a legitimate compatibility solution.
When the device is no longer supportable
The MP170 package is officially documented for Windows Vista, XP and 2000. Canon’s published support for that package does not establish compatibility with Windows 10 or Windows 11.
If the Canon installer refuses to run or the device works only partially:
- Check Canon’s support page for the exact model.
- Confirm whether a driver exists for your Windows release.
- Try Windows’ built-in printer or scanner support where the device exposes compatible functionality.
- Use compatibility mode only for the installer or application when appropriate; it cannot add a missing modern driver.
- Consider replacing the device if no supported driver exists.
System Restore is a fallback when the error clearly began after a recent driver change:
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the driver change.
- Review affected programs.
- Start the restore and restart Windows.
Use this only when a suitable restore point exists. It is not a replacement for installing a supported driver.

Frequently asked questions
Is cnhl170s.dll a Windows system file?
No. The strongest evidence associates it with Canon’s Inkjet WIA Driver. It is not a standard Visual C++, DirectX or .NET runtime component.
Which printer installed it?
The strongest match is the Canon PIXMA MP170 and related older Canon Inkjet multifunction drivers. The filename alone does not prove that every installation came from one specific model.
Can I download just the DLL?
No. Reinstall the complete Canon driver package from the official Canon support site. A loose DLL can be unsafe, incompatible or unable to resolve the real missing dependency.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Driver installation requires more than placing a file in a Windows folder. Manual copying can cause conflicts and bypass device-driver registration.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
The message can refer to a dependency required by cnhl170s.dll, not necessarily the DLL itself. Reinstall the complete Canon package and check the application and system architecture.
Will DISM and SFC restore it?
Usually not. They repair protected Windows components. They are useful when broader Windows corruption is present, but a missing Canon DLL normally requires Canon driver repair.
What if I no longer own the Canon printer?
Uninstall the old Canon software and remove its startup entries. If the error disappears, it was probably a leftover utility trying to load an obsolete driver.
What if every fix fails?
Confirm the exact Canon model, Windows version, architecture and executable producing the error. If Canon has no compatible driver for the current Windows release, replacing the device may be more realistic than forcing an obsolete package to run.
