jscript9diag.dll is a genuine Microsoft JScript Diagnostics component associated with Internet Explorer and Windows servicing, not a Visual C++ or game runtime. If it is missing or will not load, repair Windows first, then repair the application that reports the error instead of downloading a loose DLL.
What this file actually does
The file belongs to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer component set and is identified as Microsoft JScript Diagnostics. Older applications can call Internet Explorer components directly or through embedded web controls, so the error may appear when launching a program even though the damaged file is part of Windows.
It is not a DirectX file, .NET file, Java runtime, graphics driver, or Visual C++ Redistributable component. The filename alone also does not prove that a file is safe. A genuine copy should have Microsoft’s digital signature and be in the expected Windows directory.
On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
- 64-bit copy:

System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Therefore, a 32-bit application may need the copy in SysWOW64 even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

The file is delivered through Windows and Internet Explorer servicing. Historical file versions differ by Windows release and architecture, so the newest-looking DLL is not automatically the correct replacement.

Fix jscript9diag.dll errors in the safest order
1. Install Windows updates and restart
Because jscript9diag.dll is a Windows and Internet Explorer component, Windows Update is the safest way to restore the correct version for your edition, build, and architecture.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every applicable update.
- Restart Windows, even if the update process does not insist on it.
- Launch the program again.
A successful repair usually means the application opens without the DLL message. If the same error returns, continue with component repair rather than searching for a replacement download.
Internet Explorer 11 is no longer a normal standalone application to reinstall on current Windows versions. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer lifecycle guidance explains the support transition, while IE mode in Microsoft Edge is the supported route for many organizations that still require legacy web compatibility.
2. Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired store to replace protected system files. Run them in that order.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.

If SFC says it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test again. If it says it found files it could not repair, run DISM once more, record the exact result, and inspect the CBS log rather than downloading individual DLL files. Repeated SFC runs without fixing the component store generally do not solve the underlying problem.
The manual route means interpreting DISM and SFC output and tracking what changed between attempts. Antivirus software can quarantine a damaged or suspicious file, leaving an application with a missing-DLL error.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand any recent detection related to
jscript9diag.dll. - Note the detected path and action.
Do not restore the file merely because its name is correct. First check that it is located under the Windows directory, inspect its Digital Signatures tab, and confirm that the signer is Microsoft Corporation. If the file was removed from a system directory, prefer Windows Update, DISM, or SFC to restore it.
Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains the risks of restoring quarantined items. If the file is unsigned, stored in an application’s temporary folder, or detected alongside other threats, leave it quarantined and run a full security scan.
4. Repair the application that shows the error
If Windows repairs successfully but one program still fails, the application may have an incomplete installation, damaged configuration, or an embedded Internet Explorer dependency.

For a Microsoft Store or supported Windows app:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
For traditional desktop software:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if requested.
If no repair option exists, download the installer only from the application publisher or use its original installer media. Uninstall the program, restart, and install it again. This is especially important when the message appears only with one older game, launcher, business tool, or installer.

A clean application reinstall remains the definitive fix when the program’s own files are damaged. Do not place jscript9diag.dll into the game or application folder just to silence the message.
5. Check whether the application is 32-bit
A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows may need the 32-bit copy in:
%windir%SysWOW64
The 64-bit copy belongs in:
%windir%System32
To inspect the locations:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%windir%System32. - Press Enter and search for
jscript9diag.dll. - Repeat with
%windir%SysWOW64. - Right-click each file found and select Properties.
- Use the Digital Signatures tab to check the signer.
- Use Details to review the file description and version.
Do not swap the two copies or copy one into the other directory. A DLL from another Windows build can produce “not designed to run” errors or fail because its dependencies do not match.
6. Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose appropriate COM registration entry points. It is not a general installation command and does not restore a missing dependency.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains its intended use. Although jscript9diag.dll may expose registration-related exports, there is no general Microsoft troubleshooting instruction that requires registering this file to fix the missing-DLL error.
Running commands such as these can create a misleading success message without repairing the application:

Use Windows servicing and application repair instead. Only register a DLL when the software publisher or a Microsoft-supported procedure specifically instructs you to do so.

Do not repeatedly enable and disable Internet Explorer features as a blind fix. On some supported Windows configurations, an older program may depend on legacy browser components, but feature availability depends on the exact Windows edition and build.
To inspect optional features:
- Open Start and search for Windows features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review the available legacy Internet Explorer or related compatibility entries.
- Do not change features unless the application documentation or error diagnosis identifies that dependency.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Re-enabling a feature will not replace a corrupted system file if the component store itself is damaged. Run DISM and SFC first.
8. Treat driver updates as a separate issue
A graphics, chipset, storage, or printer driver does not normally provide jscript9diag.dll. Device Manager is useful only when the application also reports hardware failures, display crashes, missing devices, or driver errors.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties and review the Driver tab.
- Use Update driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart and test again.
Guessing which of many installed drivers is stale can take longer than checking each device manually. When manual DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid DLL download repositories and random forum attachments. A loose copy can have:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A missing dependency
- An invalid or absent Microsoft signature
- Malware or tampering
- A version mismatch that creates a new startup error
Copying a downloaded file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory can also hide the original servicing problem. Safe sources are Windows Update, Microsoft recovery and servicing tools, and the official installer for the application that reports the error.

When DISM and SFC cannot repair the file
If DISM fails, record the exact error code and check whether Windows Update itself is working. On managed systems, DISM may require an approved repair source matching the installed Windows edition and build.
If SFC reports unrepaired files:
- Restart and run Windows Update again.
- Run DISM and SFC once more in the correct order.
- Review the CBS log for the affected path.
- Run a malware scan.
- Check disk health if corruption returns.
- Back up personal files.
- Use Microsoft recovery options.
If the problem began immediately after an update or system change, System Restore may roll back system files and settings without normally removing personal files. If recovery cannot restore the component, use Windows repair or reset options only after backing up important data.

- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The application name and version
- The complete error message
- The path shown in the error
- Whether the file exists in
System32orSysWOW64 - The Microsoft signature result
- Any recent Windows update or application installation
- Whether antivirus quarantined the file
- The exact DISM and SFC results
FAQ
Is jscript9diag.dll malware?
Not by name alone. It is a legitimate Microsoft component, but a file with the correct name can still be misplaced, modified, or unsigned. Verify its Windows location and Microsoft digital signature.

No. It can mean that the named file exists but one of its dependencies cannot load. That is why copying only jscript9diag.dll often fails.
