avdevice-55.dll is a Windows FFmpeg library used by an application for audio and video input or output devices. The safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the program that requests it, rather than downloading the DLL separately.
The 55 identifies an older FFmpeg library ABI. A newer file such as avdevice-58.dll or avdevice-61.dll is not a replacement for avdevice-55.dll.
Fix avdevice-55.dll errors step by step
Work through these fixes in order. Restart the computer after reinstalling the affected application or completing Windows repairs.
1. Identify the program that needs the DLL
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
The DLL filename does not identify the correct repair package. First find the application that displays the error.

Look at the window title and the wording around the message. Note whether it appears when starting:
- A video editor or converter
- A camera, capture, or multimedia application
- An older game
- Audacity or another audio program
- A custom program built with FFmpeg
You can also identify the executable from Task Manager:
- Start the program until the error appears.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Processes.
- Look for the program name, or expand the application group.
- Right-click the process and select Open file location.
If the program closes too quickly:
- Open File Explorer.
- Search the application’s installation folders for the executable.
- Right-click the executable and select Properties.
- Check the Details tab for the product or application name.
- Use that exact name when locating the official installer or support instructions.
Once you know the parent application, close it and continue with its own repair process. Do not begin by searching for a standalone copy of the DLL.
2. Verify or repair the application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A missing or damaged application folder is the most likely cause when only one program fails.

- Press
Windows+Ito open Settings. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data. A repair option from the application’s own installer is usually preferable.
Repair a game installation
For a game installed through a launcher, use its file verification feature. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, select Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. In Epic Games Launcher, open the game’s three-dot menu, select Manage, and choose Verify.
The launcher should download or restore missing files. Start the game after verification completes. If the error remains, check whether an antivirus product removed the file before reinstalling the game.
Reinstall from the official source
If repair or verification fails:
- Back up saved games, projects, profiles, or custom settings.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the application developer or use the original trusted installer.
- Install the program into its normal location.
- Start it once before restoring custom files.
The installer must restore the complete FFmpeg set, not only avdevice-55.dll. Matching files may include avcodec-55.dll, avformat-55.dll, avfilter-4.dll, and avutil-52.dll, depending on the application build.

If the program is very old, its installer may include a separate FFmpeg or media-runtime package. Use that package instead of a current, unrelated FFmpeg build.
3. Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Microsoft Defender or another antivirus product may have quarantined a DLL that the application installed.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for
avdevice-55.dllor the affected application. - Expand an entry to inspect its location and action.
- Restore the file only if it came from a trusted, verified installation of the application.
Do not restore a file merely because its name is familiar. A copy found in a temporary folder, an unexpected startup directory, or an unrelated download location should remain isolated until scanned.
After restoring a trusted file, reinstall or repair the application so its entire library set is checked. If Defender immediately quarantines the file again, do not keep adding exclusions. Update the application and antivirus definitions, then contact the application developer if the detection appears incorrect.

Time needed: 10–20 minutes
The DLL must match both the FFmpeg ABI expected by the program and the program’s architecture.
A 32-bit application needs 32-bit FFmpeg libraries even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application needs 64-bit libraries. Installing a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit application folder, or the reverse, can produce an error such as:
avdevice-55.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
To check the application architecture:
- Open Task Manager.
- Start the application if possible.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if that column is available.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process is marked with text such as (32 bit). If the application will not stay open, check its official documentation or installer rather than guessing.

Do not replace the file with a newer major suffix. FFmpeg major-version changes can include backward-incompatible changes. Replace the application’s complete, matching FFmpeg library set through its official repair or installation package.
5. Distinguish a missing DLL from a missing dependency
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
These messages do not always mean that avdevice-55.dll itself is absent:
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “There was a problem starting avdevice-55.dll.”
- “Error loading avdevice-55.dll.”
Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the FFmpeg library. That dependency could be another application DLL or a runtime component.
First, reinstall or repair the parent application. This is safer than adding individual files because the installer can restore the complete set.

If the application’s documentation specifically requires a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, install the architecture it requests. Microsoft provides separate packages including vc_redist.x86.exe and vc_redist.x64.exe. Installing Visual C++ does not directly install avdevice-55.dll, so it is not a substitute for repairing the application.
If the error remains, record the exact message and inspect the application’s log files. An application developer can identify which dependent module is missing from that information.
6. Repair Windows components
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
This is a lower-probability fix because avdevice-55.dll is normally an application file, not a Windows component. Use it when several programs are failing, Windows reports broader corruption, or the problem began after a system failure.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the permission prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Restart Windows when both commands finish, then repair the affected application again.

DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They will not normally recreate an FFmpeg DLL deleted from an application folder.

7. Update or reinstall relevant drivers
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Drivers do not normally restore avdevice-55.dll, but camera, microphone, capture-card, and graphics-driver problems can appear after the DLL issue is repaired. This step is useful if the application starts but fails when you begin recording, previewing, or using a device.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras, Sound, video and game controllers, and Display adapters.
- Right-click the device used by the application.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver when available. For a clean reinstall, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the driver from the hardware manufacturer.

8. Do not register or copy the DLL manually
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose registration interfaces such as DllRegisterServer, normally COM or ActiveX components. avdevice-55.dll is an FFmpeg runtime library, so registering it is not an appropriate repair.
Do not run:
regsvr32 avdevice-55.dll
This can produce another error without solving the loading problem.
Also do not copy the file into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Another program’s installation folder
The DLL belongs beside the executable and matching libraries of the application that installed it. Copying only one file can cause an ABI mismatch, expose the next missing sibling DLL, or create DLL search-order conflicts.
9. Use System Restore only as a fallback
Time needed: 30–60 minutes
Use System Restore only when the error clearly began after a recent installation, update, or system change and no working installer or quarantine copy is available.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected applications and drivers.
- Start the restore.
System Restore can revert applications, drivers, and system settings. It does not replace a proper application reinstall and may remove changes made after the selected restore point.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
There is no single universal avdevice-55.dll file with one guaranteed version, size, architecture, or application compatibility. Different FFmpeg builds can use the same filename while differing internally.
Random DLL download sites sites can provide a wrong build, the wrong architecture, a damaged file, or malware. A copied file may also hide the actual cause, such as a missing sibling library or an incomplete installation.
Use the affected application’s official installer, launcher verification, or supported prerequisite package. The official FFmpeg project provides source code and links to Windows build providers, but it does not provide one universal Windows installer containing every historical avdevice-55.dll build.
Frequently asked questions
Is avdevice-55.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is an FFmpeg library normally bundled with the third-party application that needs it. Windows Update, DirectX, .NET, and the Visual C++ Redistributable do not normally install this file.
Can I install avdevice-61.dll instead?
No. The number is an FFmpeg ABI-major suffix. A program requesting avdevice-55.dll generally needs the older matching library set specifically supplied for that application.
Should I put the file in System32?
No. Put application DLLs only in the application’s own installation directory through the official installer or repair process.

Why does Windows say “specified module could not be found” when the file is present?
A dependency of avdevice-55.dll may be missing, incompatible, or damaged. Repair the parent application first and check its documented prerequisites.
Does registering the DLL with regsvr32 fix it?
No. regsvr32 is intended for registerable COM or ActiveX DLLs. It is not a normal repair method for FFmpeg runtime libraries.
What if reinstalling does not work?
Confirm the exact executable and installation directory, check for all expected FFmpeg sibling DLLs, review antivirus history, inspect Event Viewer and the application log, and contact the application vendor. The filename alone cannot identify the correct build.
