Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, note:
- Which program shows the error: a Canon printer utility, a print dialog, or an unrelated application
- When it appears: during startup, while printing, after a Windows update, or after removing a printer
- Your system type: open Settings → System → About → System type and check whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit
- Whether the Canon printer is still installed
- Whether antivirus software recently quarantined a Canon file

The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the complete Canon driver package for the exact printer model instead of downloading this DLL separately.
What is cnbjop89.dll?
Public file metadata identifies cnbjop89.dll as part of the Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software and associates it with CANON INC. It appears to be an older, usually 32-bit printer-driver component.
The exact Canon printer models and current driver packages that contain this filename have not been publicly established. Do not assume that every Canon printer uses it or that a current installer still includes the same file.
This is also not a file that Windows itself normally requires. If you no longer use the Canon printer or utility that installed it, restoring the DLL may be unnecessary. The correct repair depends on which Canon software is requesting it.

What the error messages mean
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because cnbjop89.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cnbjop89.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting cnbjop89.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading cnbjop89.dll.”
- “cnbjop89.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
A missing-file message usually means the Canon driver installation is incomplete, damaged, removed, or quarantined.
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that cnbjop89.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies. A damaged driver package, incompatible architecture, or missing supporting file can produce the same message.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer driver
This is the most likely solution and should be your first full repair.
Remove the affected printer
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the Canon printer connected with the error.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
If the printer is not listed, continue with the Canon software removal steps below.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Look for Canon printer software, setup utilities, or model-specific driver entries.
- Select the relevant entry and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows again.
Do not manually delete files from the Windows Driver Store. Windows manages that location through signed driver packages, and deleting individual files can leave the installation in a worse state.
Install the correct package
- Identify the exact printer model from the printer label or its original documentation.
- Open Canon’s official Software and Drivers support page.
- Search for the exact model.
- Select your Windows version and system architecture.
- Download the current compatible package. Depending on the model, it may be called MP Drivers, Printer Driver, or another model-specific package.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard and connect the printer only when instructed.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Print a Windows test page.
To test the result, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners, select the Canon printer, choose Printer properties, and select Print Test Page. If the page prints without the DLL message, the driver repair worked.

If Canon does not provide a compatible package, use Windows’ built-in installation path instead:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to find the printer.
- Select Add device next to the Canon printer.
- If it is not found, select Add manually and follow the connection options.
Microsoft recommends Windows Update first for printer-driver updates, followed by the printer manufacturer’s support page when Windows does not provide the required driver. See Microsoft’s printer-driver guidance and its printer removal and installation steps.

Fix 2: Roll back a recent driver update
If the error began immediately after a Windows or printer-driver update, rolling back the Canon driver may restore printing.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Print queues.
- Right-click the Canon printer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Choose a reason and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, remove and reinstall the printer using the procedure above. Windows may have replaced an older Canon package with a partially compatible driver, and a clean installation is usually more reliable than attempting to restore one DLL.
Fix 3: Check for a wrong or incompatible architecture
An older Canon component may be 32-bit even when Windows is 64-bit. That is not automatically an error: 32-bit printer software can run on 64-bit Windows when installed through a compatible package.

- Open Settings → System → About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
- Return to Canon’s support page.
- Choose the matching operating system and architecture when downloads are offered.
- Remove the existing Canon driver before installing the replacement.
Do not replace a 32-bit driver component with an arbitrary 64-bit DLL. The driver’s INF file, catalog, dependencies, and related files must match as a package.
Older printers may not have a current Windows 11 driver. In that situation, check Canon’s listed compatibility and try Windows Update. If neither source provides a supported driver, the printer may require an older Windows installation or a compatible generic printer driver with reduced features.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed or quarantined a damaged-looking driver file.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for a Canon driver item related to the time the error began.
- Do not restore it automatically.
- Confirm that the printer and driver came from Canon.
- If the item is clearly part of the installed Canon package, follow the security software’s restore process.
- Repair or reinstall the complete Canon driver afterward.
Never disable antivirus protection just to install a DLL downloaded from an unknown source. If cnbjop89.dll exists outside a legitimate Canon driver location, has no valid Canon signature, or keeps disappearing, run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components when broader corruption is suspected
SFC and DISM are useful when several Windows functions are failing, system files are corrupted, or other unrelated errors appeared at the same time. They are not a direct replacement for a missing third-party Canon driver.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the printer again.
Use the commands exactly as shown. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test. If it reports that it could not repair everything, repeat the Canon driver installation rather than trying to obtain cnbjop89.dll from a download site. Avoid DLL download sites sites and random file mirrors. A standalone replacement can have the wrong version, architecture, dependencies, or tampered contents. It also does not restore the signed INF and catalog files that Windows uses to install and manage a printer driver.
Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or a Driver Store folder based on a forum instruction. The correct location depends on the driver package and Windows installation.
The safe sources are:
- Windows Update
- The Add device printer workflow in Windows
- Canon’s official support page for the exact printer model
Does regsvr32 fix this error?
Usually not.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a self-registration entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components. A normal printer-driver library may not export DllRegisterServer. Running a command such as:
regsvr32 cnbjop89.dll
can therefore produce “DllRegisterServer was not found,” or appear to succeed without repairing the printer installation.

Do not register this file unless Canon’s own instructions for your exact driver specifically require it. Reinstalling the complete driver package is the appropriate repair.
If the Canon printer was already removed
If the printer is gone but the error appears at every login, an old Canon utility or startup entry may still be trying to load the DLL.

- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an obsolete Canon utility.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall Canon software you no longer use.
- Restart Windows.
If the message persists, inspect Task Scheduler for an old Canon task and remove it only after confirming that it belongs to uninstalled software. In this case, restoring the DLL is not necessary.
If reinstalling the driver does not help
Try these checks in order:
- Confirm that the downloaded package matches the exact printer model.
- Check the Windows architecture under Settings → System → About.
- Remove duplicate Canon printers from Printers & scanners.
- Reinstall after restarting Windows.
- Check antivirus quarantine again.
- Look in Device Manager for a warning icon under Print queues or Printers.
- Test with a fresh Windows user account to determine whether the error is tied to one profile.
- If the failure began after a recent installation or update, use System Restore as a fallback.
Multiple printer-driver versions can remain in Windows, so removing only the visible printer may not remove every obsolete package. If necessary, use Canon’s uninstall utility or Windows’ supported printer-management options rather than deleting Driver Store files manually.

Is cnbjop89.dll a Windows system file?
There is no reliable evidence that it is an inbox Windows component. Public metadata associates it with Canon’s inkjet printer-driver software.
Which Canon printer uses this file?
The exact printer models and current packages containing this filename have not been publicly established. Install the driver for the exact model rather than searching by DLL name.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file exists?
A dependency may be missing, or the Canon installation may be damaged or incompatible. The message does not always identify the absent file accurately.
Can SFC restore cnbjop89.dll?
SFC repairs protected Windows components. It should not be expected to restore a third-party Canon driver DLL. Reinstall the Canon package first.
Can I fix it with Device Manager?
Device Manager can roll back, update, or reinstall a printer driver. For a complete Canon repair, removing the printer and installing the model-specific Canon package is usually more effective.
What if the printer works after ignoring the message?
Remove the obsolete Canon startup item or utility if the printer is no longer using it. Do not keep a random replacement DLL solely to suppress a startup warning.
Is the file malware?
The filename alone does not prove that it is genuine or malicious. Verify its location, signature, and relationship to an installed Canon package, then scan the system if anything appears suspicious.
